Omg when i was 7 i raised painted ladies and i used to loveee butterflies and insects, and you just brought back a core memory of mine! I need to raise me this spring
My guess is those with issues got too wet with misting. You shouldn’t really need to mist them, it can risk mold and bacteria. If it is particularly dry in your house, you can LIGHTLY mist the mesh from the outside a couple times total over the course of 5 days, and it should be fine. Don’t overdo it. A little goes a long way, and in the Wild there would be more airflow for drying out excess moisture. Also, if they were staying by the window the entire time including during formation, they could have gotten a little cooked or cold depending on if the sun was shining directly on them and overheating, or at night when temps dropped. They should just be kept at room temperature and out of the sunlight. If you have a chrysalis on the ground, you have to get it as soon as you can and all J hangers have formed their chrysalides. A chrysalis on the ground can form improperly
And as long as the chrysalis is fully form, for painted ladies, they’re okay laying on its side. When still forming it yes you’d want to hang them, but they’re pretty durable compared to monarchs when it comes to Chrysalis not hanging
Yeah I was thinking the plastic tub shouldn’t have been near a window (or direct sunlight) to avoid condensation etc but I’m also thinking she appears to know a lot more about them than me lol 🦋
@@MeganSullivanx The chrysalis being formed is only the protection/shell for the metamorphosis occurring inside. If it has fallen or is not hanging correctly, 99.9% of the time the butterfly will not form correctly and will have to be dispatched (put out of its' misery). There is an entire tiny life being formed in there: not like getting a dent on your cheek from sleeping on a wrinkle in your pillow. Also, why do you have them flying around your room? Butterflies belong outside once they eclose and wings dried. If you do this again, 1) keep the containers in ambient temperature not by a sunny window. 2) once they reach chrysalis, lay the mesh cage sideways making sure it is secure, attach 3 clips to edges of the chrysalis cloth then transfer the cloth with chrysalis to the cage and attach to the mesh in 3 places so they can hang properly. You will be able to better reach inside. Place some cotton batting under them just in case one falls and 3) release them outside to be what they are.
This is the kit we did last year and they sent us 7 with ordering the 5. Two died... the really small one and the really big one. So we had 5 healthy caterpillars that turned into healthy butterflies. We enjoyed them for a few days after they emerged and then let them go. Two were already mating and I failed to tell them apart... they look so similar. The abdomen is not noticeable enough for me. Ours would chill and then fly about and then chill again. It's pretty late, but this advice can be used for anyone in this situation but you may notice they excrete red meconium after drying their wings off, that butterfly that was still in its chrysalis, the red bit at the top was the meconium, meaning the butterfly hasn't even been able to open the chrysalis

I got one of these kits locally for my 7 year old daughter and came here looking for better instructions than the ones it came with, lots of good info in just one video. But what is all the blood from?
When the chrysalis is black red it's the chrysalis being transparent the outer wings of the butterfly are very dark x I had small tortoiseshell chrysalis and this is what they did I got worried but no one chrysalis didn't die xxx
