    That is when I discovered 4 fat Monarchs chomping on my tropical Milkweed.
    Loved the video, especially the Giant Milkweed and Jatropha.

    Absolutely beautiful!
    This past summer I was truly blessed to be able to experience raising Monarch Butterflies for the first time.
    My grandma passed away in February and she really loved Butterflies so it made the experience truely special.
    We successfully raised 81 Monarch Butterflies and 36 black Eastern swallowtails.
    Thank you for sharing your experience 😊

      So sorry to hear of your grandmother passing. It is nice to hear that she too loved butterflies 🦋. Raising and getting a chance to hold one before you release it is quite beautiful! Seeing them fly away brings so much joy and it really doesn’t get old even after hundreds of butterflies later 😉. Thank you so much for your comment and I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video 🦋

    Much respect to you for what you do. Butterflies are very beautiful little creatures. My girlfriend purchased a butterfly for her son from the butterfly farm in South Florida. I begin to have an infatuation with it and I asked her to bring the butterfly Chrysalis with her when she came to ride with me on my semi truck. The butterfly was with us for almost 4 days or so and did not hatch. We were not sure if she was dead we tried to Mist spray water on her, But we believe that she may have died when her son dropped her on the ground in the car. I still think till this day that when I slammed on the brakes I was the one who killed her because she fell from the bunk to the ground which isn’t but a couple feet, but she fell hard enough to detach from the top of the cup lid which she was hanging from and that resulted in the bottom part of her cocoon breaking and exposing the inner side which was black and white. Did not look good I miss her till this day.

      I had a similar tragedy, when I was about 6 or 7 I found a butterfly cocoon and picked it from a tree so that I could take it home and raise it. Realistically, I probably killed it in while doing so but I remember taking it to Pizza Hut before we went home and I forgot it in the restaurant and I imagined the waitress sweeping it into the trash and it haunts me to this day.

    When you collect caterpillars put 3 or 4 in smaller containers. If you put them all in one large container if one caterpillar has a disease or virus you will lose all of them. I use small ex food containers, making sure I clean them out everyday when I put new leaves in.
    I collect the eggs because of the predators, and put them in containers on a small part of the leaf I find them on. As soon as I see the black dot of the head emerge from the eggs I then place them on fresh new leaves.

    • @aGirlwithaGarden
      @aGirlwithaGarden  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for the tips😉🦋 however there are way to many caterpillars that I care for at a given time to place 3-4 in a small container. I have experienced a few caterpillars not making it but they didn’t kill off the entire group like you mentioned. I used to collect at the egg stage but I don’t anymore but that’s awesome that you do that🦋!!

    I live in southern BC and get lots of different butterflies in my garden, and have had painted lady and tiger swallowtail caterpillars we raised and released for fun. Monarchs can come this far, but they are rare to non-existent here. I’m adding a fair amount of milkweed to my garden this year, but since we’re on the extreme edge of their migration range I’m not expecting any to come.

    I used to raise tortoiseshell butterflies as a kid in the UK in the 1970s.
    I kept them in cardboard shirt boxes that had clear plastic panels in.
    Releasing them made me sad but proud.
    Such a shame that there are far fewer butterflies nowadays

    We started raising Monarch last year. Got a bad milkweed plant, probably with tons pesticides, and all 20+ caterpillars died last week. But at least we've got 8 healthy ones released this week!! So happy@

      That’s awesome you were able to at least release some healthy butterflies 🦋. It is always disappointing when some don’t make it especially when they feed on some bad milkweed. Wish growers wouldn’t spray their milkweed but I understand some view them as pests 😕

    my butterflies and hummingbirds love the lantana and echinacea (coneflowers). I understand why u like collecting at the last instar phase ot makes the process go alot faster from cat,chrys,to butterfly 😍😍

    Thanks for this video! Was plucking some weed in my garden and found butterfly eggs on a grass blade. Don’t know what butterfly eggs they are. Tried using google lens but didn’t get a result. All of the eggs look the same hahah. Will try raising them and hopefully I’ll succeed!♥️🤞🏻

    we normally leave our wasp nests alone since they don't get too big but this year they really did a number on our caterpillars so they're gonna have to go :( that being said, I'm excited to be able to bring the caterpillars in and to be able to raise them!

    • @aGirlwithaGarden
      @aGirlwithaGarden  3 года назад

      Hello there... Yeah I hate having to kill or remove wasp nests. I only remove them if they take home by the mail box or front door. I realize wasps are a part of the natural life cycle but it is never a good feeling seeing them eat a caterpillar that you've helped rase :(

    Have you ever wondered about that gold ring around the Danaiid chrysalis?
    It is a foothold for the newly emerging butterfly.
    An hour or so before eclosure, the pupa shifts a bit, and the band pops out and becomes a groove
    8:15
    This provides a foothold on an otherwise celiphane smooth chrysalis.
    If you notice, each caterpillar will attach to its silk pad with its back to the light source.
    That way, as the newly emerging adult pivots to grasp this foothold, it now faces the Sun.
    I have watched countless times, and even butterflies that catch hold of the chrysalis at another point will still eventually pivot until its feet are securely within this groove.
