Please forgive the frequent re-uploads and don’t blame Ajahn Punnadhammo for it, but me, his videographer. I am not always able to test things on RUclips before hand, so this is why. Hope you can appreciate the improved quality. Metta Everyone.
Priceless knowledge, thank you so much I also listen to Rana Rinpuche from Nepal, he also makes so much effort to educate the world about an early Buddhist history, I wish these two great teachers could do a project together for the benefit of the world. Just a thought Thank you again
Thank you, Ajahn for a fascinating glimpse into early Buddhist points of controversy. I have a feeling there is a lot more to learn, but you have very effectively pointed the way if we wish to undertake further study. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Sadu sadu sadu Sorry venerable I must correct you. Rhys Is pronounced like the candy brand. Reese. Not Rise. They are likely Welsh not British. As was my mother, who was also a Rhys.
Unrelated but it's amazing how often Rhys gets cited to anything about Buddhism in English but so often her interpretations are marked as incorrect these days
If Theravada predated the Mahayana beliefs, then why do scholars say the Mahasamghika has the oldest Vinaya? Why do scholars believe and say almost unanimously that it was the Sthaviravas who wanted to changed the Vinaya, and the Mahasamghika saw them as defects because it was them who wanted to change and "add" rules to the original Vinaya? Scholars believe the Mahasamghikas on this because it both predates the Theravada Vinaya, but it also does have less rules than the Theravada, so Scholars agree it was indeed the Sthaviras who defected. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mah%C4%81s%C4%81%E1%B9%83ghika Scholars agree, the 2nd council was an issue of vinaya, and just this mere 116 years after Buddha death they held these beliefs of eternal Buddha etc, Buddha existing in all directions etc.. Then why wasn't the second council an issue over their doctrine? Check the sources in wiki I linked and read, I'm not fabricating anything here. Mahasamghika had these mahayana beliefs a mere 116 years post death, and the council was not anything related to these beliefs at all, but rather a defect group, nor some elders, not all elders, only some of them, a small group of the elders wanted to alter and add to the Vinaya. Those Sthaviras went on to become three other schools, including the sarvastivada, and the other school was Theravada. Scholars agree the Mahasamghika represents the earliest undivided Sangha Vinaya, and that the stheravdas are the defect group from that who wanted to add and change it, and indeed it does have additions to it, not found in the Mahasamghika Vinaya.
