I realize that there was not a significant presence of Theravada traditions in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Japan. But perhaps there were a few lone outposts? Their story would be well worth telling. I've read several Pali texts stating that Punna went to Suparanta near Mysore: also called Supara ( Ophir) , the Coptic (Gupta) name of India was Sapar. Likewise the Buddha's first converts Ballaka and Tupissa were said to missionize Balk Afghanistan ( Balk / Ballaka,) where they converted the Kambojas ( Cambyses) during the reign of Cambyses and Gomata (bull-sacrifice) : also rendered as Komedes, another tribal name of the Kambojas
I wanted to ask Bhante about the Vipassana mediation centres facilitated and instructed by late shree Gainer ji, who claims to be authorised him to teach by the Burmese teacher. I have heard that it is not an authentic teaching of Buddha and misleading because you first have to attain Samatha to practice Vipassana. I have also heard Buddhists Sangha in Sri Lanka was against it I would be most grateful if Ajahn Punnadhammo could comment on this Thank you so much
Hello. I don't know about the method taught by Gainer Ji, but one of the highest authorities in Vipassana meditation of the 20th Century, the Burmese monk Mahasi Sayadaw, never said that is necessary to attain samadhi first to practice Vipassana. But of course, a great concentration helps a lot in the practice...

It’s said two brothers,Taphussa and Bhallika are not Burmese but Mon race who were born in Okkalāpa(now so called Yangon).
Yeah but the people live in Burma so is it so important?
