    I was once told that "Pali to Sanskrit" was like "Italian to Latin"...one was the vernacular and the other was the traditional "sacred" language. Was that a fair comparison?

    Sanskrit (con-sound-act) developed in 5th century BCE. Early Sanskrit and Pali Prakrit are similar. Sanskrit is modified.

    Currently learning pali with "Pali Made Easy" and the "Learn pali" RUclips channel. ChatGPT can translate pali, and it has been almost a tutor - being able to ask questions and get my translations graded. ChatGPT has some issues tho, so it isn't 100% reliable but probably 90%.

      @naturecure280 4 дня назад

      I think ChatGPT is mainly based on few Western Scholars' translation work available online. But Pali is much more complicated when it comes to words that are not used many times in the Suttas and some other complicated Sandhi. I am studying Pali at ITBMU in Yangon now. Our Pali Language textbook is "Pali Made Easy".

      @@naturecure280 The author is Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya. It is published by Buddhist Cultural Centre. I'm only 20 lessons in, but it has been a good experience so far. ChatGPT has a lot of room to improve in this fashion, but 4o is quite usable right now. It has been really useful to feed it suttas in Pali and ask it to break it apart and explain piece by piece. I'll interrogate it on what the Pali word was it chose to translate as some English word. It is very much based off of the online information - that is where one needs to be careful. If you interrogate it to define some words - such as sati - it will be a lot of the McMindfulness types of explanations. It also will hallucinate most of the time if you ask it to reference other suttas - it'll just make up names and argue that they are canon. I would really like to see one of these models fine tuned on the complete canon and commentaries.

    Hi Venerable, thanks for your work. I know that you’re not intentionally trying to spread misinformation, but I would suggest that you do some more investigation into the Goenkagyi tradition maybe even taking a course then you would really start to understand it. There is a really good interview with Barry lapping on the Myanmar insight podcast.

    Hi Venerable, thanks for your work. Mahasi Sayadaw got his name from the huge drum that was situated at his village monastery where he took robes as far as I know he was born in Shwebo, another thing is the Goenka method and the U Ba Khin method are exactly the only difference is that Goenka teaches it as a Universal Practice In the same sense as the Buddha would have taught it, to prove this there is not one mention of the word Buddhist in the Tipitika but there are plenty of words for a Dhammist in various forms, U Ba Khin taught the Vipasanna in the context of a Buddhist environment. Oh, it’s an interesting theory that you said that Vipasanna was invention of the British occupation. Vipasanna and the Abhidhamma was widely spread because of the British occupation and they’re printing presses. Actually, there is a tradition in Burma that when the senior monk feels that his most senior students are up to the task the head monk will wander off into the forest to make an attempt to complete his path to Nibanna. Vipasanna is a technique that needs to be asked for from a proficient teacher. That is why it is not in the text as that would value the efficacy of the Vipasanna , and you absolutely have to have a teacher. It’s not something you can just make up from scriptures especially if some mental difficulties come up you need someone who’s experience that can share metta with you and help you come difficulties that might cause mental health type of problems. It is very very dangerous to start practising serious Vipassana Meditation without a competent teacher.

    I haven't read it, but there's a book out called "The Half-Life of Facts: Why Everything We Know Has an Expiration Date". This supports the view at 27:00 that our knowledge isn't strictly cumulative, but is a leaky.

    Ajahn, it is probably not the case, but vpn can affect internet signal (VPN will slow down your connection because it needs some of that bandwidth for encryption purposes). But I did hear from my Canadian friend who works in the wilderness planting trees that internet quality there is bit glitchy. They probably need to plant more internet signal boosters as well. :) Thank you Ajahn!

    Mahavira and Makkhali Gosala were contemporaries of Gautama Buddha as both were active during fifth century BC and were present in the greater Magadh area. They were central figures of Jainism and Ajivikas. I was expecting some reference of them.
