PSO was one of the few times I truly felt like I was experiencing something special and bigger than the game in front of me.
This game literally got me through High School. Always an inspiration Johnny. Love hearing your stories and reflection.
Same. My version of high school was rough. Was about getting through the misery to get home to my room and log on and hunt down rare weapons. I hold this game very near and dear.
@@richiep3520🙏 best game ever.
@@richiep3520 I had a similar experience with Halo 3. I would slog through the daily misery that was HS just to go home and play that and have a social experience on XBOX live.
I wish I could have experience PSO at its peak. I think I would have enjoyed it and played it heavily if I had the chance.
The music in that game is so timeless and charming. Everything and the memories of time spent on PSO1 will stay with me forever. Amazing game.
The music touches me in the depth of my soul. Can’t describe that feeling adequately
So jealous of everybody who got to play this in its day, must have been mindblowing.
Honestly still pretty mind blowing through pso:bb Ephinea. Just to see where things came from and how well it actually holds up today
It was. You can’t fully appreciate it unless you were there, but it truly felt like the future. We had AOL Instant Messenger back then, which was mind-blowing enough to 12 year old me, but actually seeing a digital representation of a real person that you could communicate with was on a whole new level. It felt like magic or something. It’s crazy that was 20 years ago. It feels like last week.
Not as mind-blowing for a PC gamers, but for an RPG dungeoncrawler on consoles sure. PSO plays basically like a 3D version of Diablo 1 more than anything.
I hesitate to call it an MMORPG, since really most players only meet in a lobby and once they start a session it has a 4 player limit.
Compare that to very early MMORPGs like Meridian 59, Nexus, Ultima Online, Dark Eden, Asheron's Call and Everquest. Now those were mind-blowing.
Despite that PSO was and still is fun. You can join servers like Ephinea or Schthack today and have un on PC.
It's still fun on private servers. I like the simplicity of the combat combined with some more complex systems for developing your character. And I really like hunting for specific items when you know which monsters drop that item.
It was a great split screen experience for so many people ❤
I can't believe it's been 20 years. That first time online was so crazy...it's hard to describe now in a world where pretty much every game is online. But back then, that first time you log in was sort of like going to a whole new world.
I still play PSO. I go through a phase every few years where I play it compulsively like it's new again. I can't ever see a day where I won't play it, even if it's just to log in and listen to the music.
Truly one of the all time great games.
I remember playing this as a kid on Gamecube. Funny thing was despite the online aspect, I never played it online, only through local multiplayer. To this day it is still one of my favorite local multiplayer games.
Yes me too. Do you know of any other games like this? Action RPG local multiplayer? The closest games I can think of are Balders Gate games, Champions games, Xmen Legends games, Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, and Dynasty Warriors games.
Woah this is the first time I've seen someone with the same SMT logo as their pfp lol
@@newgameaaaa I've tried for many years to find an equivalent but nothing even comes close to how good this game was local coop. Don't get me wrong there are alot of amazing local coop games but PSO was and is on another level.
@@newgameaaaa Gauntlet was great as a local coop RPG
@@carck6442 Ah yes. I forgot to list that one.
I'll never grow tired of hearing Johnny talk about PSO, it sounds like such a magical time.
Twas really cool getting to see his characters etc!
Two things I truly loved about PSO: 1) how mysterious it was & 2) the cut content (it just makes me sad that it never made it in the final version, but I love it because of what PSO could've been).
The timing for this video couldn't be better. I'm getting hit with snow and PSO nostalgia.
There are still some private servers out there like Ephinea
@@quatjohn4375 Nice.
@@quatjohn4375 Hard to get a group there, though.
Yoooooo... for real I agree 100% I literally just bought a Dreamcast with PSO
Go easy on the coke man.
Never played any Phantasy Star but I’ve seen every video Johnny has made about it because it’s obvious how impactful it was on him and how passionate he is about the game being great. Always refreshing to watch
You should play some pso:bb Ephinea :)
So many late nights and days with this game, I would tie up the phone line sometimes for days at a time and having my parents get pissed at me cause no one could get through. I miss that time and this game.
My parents were not happy about the phone bill.
"You're terminated, Fukker" - That made me chuckle!
I wish Phantasy Star could get some kind of reboot or FF7 style remake
you can still play it on fan servers
You mean the original series?
I am up for that.
@@zanychelly ephiena or schthak are the main ones. Definitely worth it if you played in the past.
Look up PSO2 New Genesis.
Only the FF7 remake was a bastardized imagining of an otherwise near flawless game. Come on man... ZERO grinding? You just zip right along? That ain't FFVII brah. That's... idk... a slideshow carnival where you mash A?
I miss the days I used to play this on the OG Xbox with my sister, my friend, and an online friend.
Heavens Punisher, coolest weapon in the game. During certain real time hours it is a regular pistol, but during the other hours it locked on to every enemy in the room and rained down beams of light on enemies. Have never played a game as revolutionary as this. Still the best online game I've ever played.
For sure this was the best weapon. I’m so glad someone brought it up!!!
I played it offline only. No internet back in the day. I remember how vibrant and colorful it was. I loved my Dreamcast. It still hurts to think it would die soon.
I could listen to you talk about Phantasy Star Online everyday. Love these look-backs; they remind me of my own time spent playing it with my sister and friends back in the early 00s.
I was only 11 when this came out, probably about 12 when I first started playing.
I still remember the first time going into Forest with my lvl 1 HUmar and actually running back to the safe zone behind the gate when a Booma popped up, I got so scared.
My heart was pounding as I took down the first Booma and when I saw the red pool of blood on the body I freaked out even more.
But since then I was just so happy to play and when it came to GC I went full on and did 4 player split screen with my pals. We would do forest to ruins runs split screen.
and now 20 years later I still log into Ephinea server and play around just for Nostalgia sake.
PSO is so special that the Nostalgia just adds for me each time I start it up again, It never ruins the old feeling I had when I was a kid it was that special of a game.
Same here for me. I remember being so young but being so excited because it was like a whole new world of video games.
I don't go back to it very often because I got sick and tired of the loot treadmill style of video games after playing them so much that I don't play them anymore.
Phantasy Star online is one of those special ones that I will play pretty much every five or six years and put in a couple hundred hours and then tell myself "yep I'm good." and stop playing again.
Sometimes the Nostalgia just takes over and I wish I could go back to when I was young again to do it all over.
WE LOVE YOU HCG! You could make a video about a sandwich and i would gladly watch keep blasting the videos out!!!
He actually did make a vid about a sandwich, well kinda! In his cameo on the Gamesack video about the Ys games, he kept talking about making a chicken sandwich, which he proceeded to make, while singing a song about it lol
Gotta say I LOVE this video. Watched it several times now. Such an amazing game. Love it. I could listen to you talk about this game for hours.
Love this video! I've watched it a few times already and it brings back so many memories of my childhood spending countless days playing with my friends for the first time online. Your last PSO video is what introduced me to this channel, and I've been a fan of yours ever since. Thank you for sharing this.
hey man i doubt you'll see this, but i actually remember seeing you running around on pso back in the day! really awesome seeing someone from back then going on to be successful online
This takes me back. This game got me through some rather intense post-wisdom tooth removal pains. I played it all throughout high school and made some good friends through it.
One of my favourite games of all time.
I'll never forget the excitment I got when I stepped into Ultimate for the first time and realized everything had changed instead of just sped up. It was incredible.
Lol same. Here I was doing like 10 damage to the mobs and freaking out cuz they were built like tanks.
I love these videos so much. Thank you for doing such a careful and wonderful job in preserving and sharing your memories and experiences in the game.
I must have put 200 hours into this game, but never played online. I went to a friends house who had it online and the quality of gear that dropped from trash made me feel like I wasted so much time lol
You have brought me back to college times 😍 the soundtrack music hasn’t aged at all.
Stumbled upon your channel and the stories and feelings of those moments in time is exactly what I've been looking for. And this one, PSO, really hits home
I'm still playing it! Feeding my mag while I watch this video.
It’s always a joy to hear Johnny’s game stories. 😁👍🏾
I got PSO for Dreamcast when it first came out but since I was so young, for some reason I couldn’t manage to go online. I finally played Phantasy Star Online on Xbox Live from June 2003 to November 2003. It was a brief period, the memories last a lifetime. I went by matrixEXE, ROY EXE, Atlantis, and Mika. They were mostly HUmars and FOmars. I was one of the annoying 12 year old kids. 😅
Even if you just pumped out videos solely about Phantasy Star Online, I’d still watch every single one! I always come back to your PSO videos to relive my PSO glory days.
Thank you for the videos and looking forward to more!
Love these nostalgia videos where you tell us about your experiences with these older games
After watching some of your older videos on phantasy star I finally decided to buy a copy of pso1 for the gamecube and I can't wait for it to come in the mail so I could play it for the first time. I'm really glad that I got into the phantasy star series because of you and your videos Johnny
Thank you so much for uploading this.
My first ever online co op game. one of my fondest gaming memories of all time. Big up all the old clan members out there!!
What a fantastic video!! Thanks Johnny!!
Love and Respect! Thanks for the videos!
Man this was a great video. Even though they're different games it brought back so many memories, and such nostalgia for me for Everquest and Ultima Online!
I remember my friend showing me when it came out on Gamecube. It was a game-changer.
20 years later here I am just looking forward to PSO2 New Genesis.
came here knowing that pso music would be playing in the background
20 years. Crazy. Feels like it was just yesterday. Then again, it sort of was. I don't think I'll ever truly stop playing it!
I also especially loved the footage you showed off from your saves. Wish I still had mine! Man that brought back a flood of memories. I too was such a huge SEGA fan that discovering those "fan service" mags was like icing on the cake.
I was in the 8th grade when my uncle game me his Dreamcast and showed me PSO for the first time I was hooked right away he even had all the weapons and best armor so I was a god... Sadly got hacked after about 6 months straight of playing and I got so mad I quit... I still remember the good times tho, met a lot of friends and I’m glad I got to be apart of it and now I’m playing PSO2... Your videos about PSO bring back good memories thank you!
I have been wanting more details about your days of PSO for years. Thank you!
Totally understand that “jump” in graphics and gameplay. Life got in the way in the early 2000s, so I didn’t get to enjoy much of the PS2/OG Xbox generation. Played a few games, but that was it. Even then I played my N64/PS1 more. So when I first put in Assassin’s Creed and Modern Warfare in my PS3 my jaw dropped. Couldn’t believe my eyes. Those two games were what got me back into gaming.
It's a standout for many of us for a reason. In my mind it will always serve as the golden age of console gaming. Devs weren't as restricted and could more fully realize their projects, innovation was much more prevalent as nobody had really cemented a 3D industry standard yet, plus the speeds allowed in gameplay drastically changed. The Dynasty Warriors games blew everyones mind with how fluid, fast and crisp things were.
The last generation to be DLC and bs scumbag practice free. No loot boxes, no mobile cash grab trash. But if a game shipped like crap, it stayed that way. Only tradeoff i guess. Well worth it imo after the past few years of "release it now patch it later" bs going on in the industry.
We're clearly in a dark period, but then again one could make that assertation in regards to all things in life currently, i suppose.
What a blast from the past. I played this game SO much but I didn't even have any online access. Seeing those items again was a hoot. Thanks for sharing
Your video here inspired me to dig out my pandemic refurbished Dreamcast (it had a bad door switch) and my original copy of PSO from twenty years ago. I just started from scratch with my 4x memory card and I am re-learning everything. I also took a page from your character overview and named mine ToeJam (with white hair and a red outfit). Anyhow, thanks for the video!
Man, you have just touched on some very dear memories!! It came out in my 1st year of college and I remember setting up my Dreamcast for onine and spending 12 hours on the launch day playing it.
Brings back many good memories having a sleep over, playing 4 player split screen on the GameCube with my childhood friends. It was my 11th birthday and it will forever be one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had. Thank you for making this video to remind me of those memories HappyConsoleGamer.💯🎮✨
I remember that huge jump back in the day. Amazing game, great experience, great memories.
Got my DC out and started playing a few months ago. Can't believe its been that long.
man i love these nostalgia videos!
thanks Johnny!
Yess I’ve been waiting for this video!
The year is 2022 and i'm playing pso 2 for gamecube online via wiiu nintendont, cheers to the fans who bring life to the online servers today!
I spent so many hours playing PSO my freshman year of high school, I was literally playing through the night and sleeping in classes all day lol!
The graphics, the gameplay, and the community... will forever love this game and I even still have my original DC copy.
I didn’t come along to PSO until the Gamecube in 2004 and only played that online at a friends house but still remember how fun it was. I did play Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2 which was similar to PSO being online for the DC. It was one of the few games you could play on the PS2 with dial up and I even went out of my way to get a PS2 keyboard. So many great memories. Consoles going online in 2001-2004 was so crazy because it was a new frontier when it came to consoles. Then WoW happens in 2004 and puts MMORPGS in the mainstream!
A great Sunday was had (12 hrs ahead here in Vietnam), then a video from John the icing on the cake. Cheers HCG!
Makes you proud to be a gamer when you see someone talk with so much love and enthusiasm about a game they used to play 😊
Dreamcast. That journey was amazing. Teaming up with other players. Character creating was fun. The DC was ahead of its time.
Being able to team up with friends was awesome. So many ways to play, explore, and learn something new about the world along the way.
Loved the Mag system. They were cute, but served a greater purpose. Especially innovating gameplay, enhancing a characters capabilities.
PSO was a fun experience
Haha Johnny. I believe I teamed up with you on many occasions
Wild its been 20 years
I always skipped Phantasy Star games but I'm about to play the Sega Ages version on the switch. Thank you for the video. I can hear the love you have for the series and I love hearing your memories of the franchise.
This is going to be an amazing episode 😁
Just hearing the music in this video brought back a lot of memories of this game. Love it.
As someone who cannot afford to experience all those 'big jumps' in games and was too young to experience them when things were cheaper I'm just obsessed with hearing you talk about PSO. It's so sad that the feeling is not there anymore! People are so accustomed with online experiences that everything has become stale.
Have you ever jumped on a Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst (for Windows PC) private server? While there are not over 1000 players online in this day in age, one should be able to find 50-100 on a server. Since PSO is over 20 years old it does not feel like new games. To a modern gamer it can feel fresh in its own way due to its gamey-ness. The magic is still there. I know I could pick it up today and slip right back in.
Man the nostalgia. Thanks for sharing!
Nene almost looks like 2B.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I feel like I must have played with you at least a few times, I feel like I remember the Serge07 name.
Thank you for sharing! :D
Seeing so many of these characters lv +100 is nuts. I've been playing it online recently and have one character around 80 and the other in the early 40s. I can only imaging how many hours it took you to get them that high level with all of them.
Wow. I had this and my Dreamcast till 2016. Sold it since I was moving and needed the money. All that time and memories. Can’t believe its been 20 years. Surreal!
John my man, doesn’t matter how bad my day is, what you’re talking about, or what I’m doing. Any time I’m having a sh*t day and I see a new video pop up in the feed it always puts me in a better mood. Your passion, genuineness and joy for gaming really remind me that it’s all good and I appreciate everything you do. Keep on gaming bro!
Man sitting down and closing my eyes to remember that period in my life when I first booted up the game is amazing.
I played mostly with online friends, and even made a mini clan. We never really kept in touch but wish I had.
That game made a gamer of me for life, 56k dial up and a Dreamcast was the first time I got to play with others online and it blew my mind.
That second boss.....still haunts me to this day....
I like intros to videos. Lol idk it’s dumb but I love it when you say “so welcome to another video” every time.
PSO is the only MMORPG I was ever really able to get into for some reason, and I was freaking obsessed. Had a little Dreamcast/Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard setup where I nerded out. I remember about 10 years ago when I found out about private servers still being populated and realized why the Dreamcast broadband adapter was still so expensive! So cool to see your characters still existing on your VMU!
Who the hell would even downvote this. Johnny always has amazing material.
There’s nothing better than HCG’s reminiscing videos. I remember the early aughts, and they were a magical time. There wasn’t enough info on games online to min/max so people just enjoyed themselves and figured things out as they went along.
Your Phantasy Star Online was my Diablo 2. Many of the same feelings you have about PSO, I have for D2. So many good times!
The first time I played online on a console, communicating with other people from other parts of the world with its instant translator. It was magical.
It's great to see someone talk about this awesome game (and series) with such enthusiasm. I feel like my love and experiences with PSO are similar to yours. I'm a huge Phantasy Star fan in general and PSO truly changed my life.
I need to go dig up my old VMUs and Dreamcast now. XD
PS: Props for making a character based on Bubblegum Crisis. My 1st was a HUnewarl named Pryss. (With a y because Phantasy Star characters always had y's in their names for some reason. XD)
Had fun watching. dropped a like
Always loves seeing a passionate story about game like this.
You should jump on a fan server dude. I'm still playing Dreamcast PSO on the Sylverant server.
is that thru PC emulation or can I do with my phone
@@themollymachine Some people are using emulation to play online yeah. I use a Dreamcast personally.
Man...its been 20 years...thinking about picking up a dreamcast again and the PSO games for it...bring back memories
Amazing video man! actually share more stories about it
I can't believe it's been 20 years and I'm still playing it.
Love this channel, need daily vids haha
As someone who played the game from day one to server close on both DC and GC I love the enthusiasm.
Love your content John! As I was born in the 80s, I get a big nostalgia kick out of your channel! I think i have now watched every single video. Good luck in the future best wishes to you and family! P.S never give up on making content pls! For a selfish reason!😃😃
PSO will always be a game I revisit for hundreds of hours. Something about this game just never gets old to me.
I got this for the gamecube as a kid so many good memories playing with my whole family on split screen.
Best way to start the day. New HCG video and a cup of coffee. Zen
PSO&PSOBB is one of my favorite games ever, and always have been. I remember shedding many tears when the SEGA servers for PC went down. Imagine getting a PSO remaster, same game just updated visually, oh man what joy that would bring!
Happy console gamer discusses my favorite game of all time while wearing a jacket of my favorite show of all time! Good times!
First time I played this game was on the GameCube. At the time I didn’t have the internet adapter and I played solo. I was so addicted to the game but could never get far. I really hope we can get a remaster so I can finally play this game online with friends.
The Dreamcast was a console ahead of its time. I wonder what could of been if Sega had stuck around making more consoles.
I remember watching videos over and over on gamespot about the gameplay for PSO. I had a Dreamcast, but I never picked it up. I was a kid at the time, and I had to get games from my parents. One of the games that slipped away.
This brings back memories! I had this and the ethernet adapter and played it so much back in the day.
So cool to have some relive my memories too around the Dreamcast!
Johnny always making Sunday mornings a lot better. Cheers mate
Ha, same thing happened to me with Final Fantasy XI. So many memories and still have friends from back then!
Played it originally on the Dreamcast and got really deep in the GC version with my brother and friends. Started playing Ephinea PSO Blue Burst in earnest during the first quarantine period last year and have been deep ever since. Love that they added a real story mode to the episodes and all the online quests and events.
