Jeez I was working on this last night. The Bentley clearly says to do it wide to wide. And of course it's locked up. Can't believe this video just popped up to help me fix it!
I just did it thanks to you. I was going to install it without the piece allowing the movement but i was like, wait a second. After some search on youtube here i am. Best video for this problem.
Life saver bro. Took apart my Porsche 924 cv joints to clean and inspect and put on new boots and they basically fell apart and I couldn’t figure out how to put them back together lol.
I took my joint apart to clean and got inner and outer correct but the middle cage... I did not realize it was directional. I got it back together but it had a very annoying vibration under hard acceleration. Was going to buy a new axle because it has some other issues and is a cheap China axle from auto parts store. This fixed my vibration. I have done many of these and I’m afraid to admit I had gotten very lucky. Right up until doing it on my own car in my own garage. Go figure.
Man, thanks so much for this. Took apart one of my inner CVs on my '01 S4 and when I put it back together it just kept binding. Took it apart 3 or 4 times, and every time same result. I marked the flange side of all the components with a marker before disassembly so was confused what the issue could be. The relative position of the inner and outer race (big hump to small hump) was something I didn't consider, and that was the problem. Saved me from having to take off the other side and deal with all of that mess just to compare to a known good. Thanks again.
I'm wrenching on my 2000 s4, took apart the inner CV, and got things mixed up as well, glad I found this video to get things re-oriented properly. Good luck on your B5
Bought a new inner joint, fully built, and the balls and it didnt move at all. I've never done this before, but something was wrong i thought. So i had to use a hammer to turn the cage to put grease in it....hope i didnt destroy it. Going out to the garage to check if it came from the factory wrongly built, as i suspect it did. If so, this vid is a life saver before i install it to the axle today :D
Good chance it did, there's another guy called italjohn (I think!Swedish guy anyways)on RUclips who bought one from brickwerks who are very reputable, but which was assembled incorrectly.
You just resolve the issue i had with this cv joints. I mounted them in the "incorrectly" assembly way (btw how can that happen like its normal on all brands ??) and got incredible vibration like hell after driving the car past 80kmph, now i know what i need to fix. Many thanks.
Awesome video man. After reassembled the ball and cage and reinstall it to my suv, I get a lot of vibration. I found out that I put it the wrong way. Hopefully it will drive normal once I finish putting it back together tomorrow.
Nice video You got Subscribe right away. I have bolls fall of during transmission removal on 2015 Passat. This is great instruction how to get them back. Thanks!
The outside line that you say that goes to the wheel, in SFK VKJC5151 (VW T4) goes to the axle, I have to check the original one. Also the cage, the flat side goes inside instead outside
Different videos give different info.. Others say the inner race with the hump, as you were calling it, goes outward, away from axle, you say towards axle??
I saw many videos and threads on thesamba.com and came to the conclusion that the chamfered/hump side goes towards the axle. It’s been working for me. Maybe it varies from vehicle to vehicle.
@@targabill I think the C-clip that holds the CV to the axle shaft may have clearance issues if installed the same side as the raised/chamfered/hump part.
So the "FLAT" side goes to the transmission flange and the "RAISED" side goes towards the driveshaft to the CV joint at the wheel. A bit confusing because at 0:57 you say the side with the line (the FLAT side) goes to the wheel or the flange.
There are two different bodies, same thing but one has a single line and no line. The other one has 3 lines and 1 line. Maybe something to do with different manufacturers
@@carlosz7208 Well my inner CV joints do not have any line at all. They are original and off my Porsche 911 (993). But I did know about the narrow and wide tabs. I just wasn't sure which side the side with a raised edge (on the splined part) goes to and I also noted some rebuilds showing the beveled edge which all makes sense for shaft clearance.
Great and detailed video! As far as tapered edge of the cage, it should always go toward the axle but the raised edge of the spider gear should go against trust washer but I have seen some aftermarket axles where the spider gear's raised edge goes toward the transmission (circlip was installed on that end) - they didn't even use the thrust washer. What is your opinion to it?
To be honest I’ve only rebuilt my vw CVs once and they’re still doing well after 15k miles. There was an extra washer in my kit but didn’t use it. Can remember why, think it was for a different bug CV.
@@carlosz7208don't worry I'm closer than you think big guy I don't forgive I don't forget I get even and I've already seen you hanging with your fam nice kids by way hope they don't miss their father when he goes prison for beating a homeless handicap man that can't walk 😮😮😮😮😮😮😂🎉
Awesome vid! Removed my trans from my 74 super and one of the inner cc joints wouldnt leave the trans. Long story short one the balls fell out of the wheel side cv joint and here i am. We coudnt figure it out until now. Thanks! Would i be able to pjt it back together with the inner part installed on the axle or do i have to remove the C Clip and inner part? Thanks again inadvance.
Hi Krispy, thanks for the support. I’d think you’d have to remove the entire cv from the axle to rebuild, easier than trying to assemble while on the axle. The axle will obstruct the cage and inner part from lining up when assembling.
I accidentally put mine together little hump towards little hump and big hump towards big hump like you show at 9:20 couse Im an idiot..... Is their any way to take it apart again and reassemble it the correct way? Or do I need to buy a new CV joint? @@carlosz7208 Nope did not drive on them, noticed that somethin was wrong right away when it was locked upp. Så due to its locked up I cant figure out how to get it apart without destroying in.. any suggestions? :)
Is it possible for it to be in incorrectly and still articulate because I've been hassling with mine for a couple days and I just put it back together and I hear considerable thumping and unbalanced feeling at traffic speed
But everything moved freely before I put it on the shaft and it seemed to move around just fine after bolting it up but it sounds like a bad CV shaft going down the road
Great video. I’m planning on attempting this repair on my mk4 golf. Are both the inner and out part of the axle rebuildable? I’m getting a lot of shaking during acceleration only. My motor mounts n front end r new so my axles must be the problem as they’re 21 yrs old. I don’t wanna spend $600 on good ones so I’m thinking about rebuilding them. Any advice. Thx in advance
To be honest, I’m not a mechanic and have only done these on my vw bus once. They’re used as hell (40+years old) but were still usable. Check for excessive wear. All my cv’s were the same so it didn’t matter which side (wheel/tranny) it went on. Yours are probably similar but double check on that just in case. Make sure to buy good grease and boots.

Really well machined CV joint..
TaigaTurf original German CV joints from Germany are much better than much of the new ones from china

Good one, most people don't know the design of this VW disk type cv joint and install them incorrectly.
You should do more explanation videos because your explanation will make the hardest one to easiest one.
The three line grove goes on the axle side where metal part of boot mate. The single grove line always on the wheel side. Not all parts have 3 lines.
