  • So, I really wanted to install a nice Wood shift ball on my MGB to match the wood grain I have installed on the dash. but that meant that the switch needed to go somewhere. we decided to remove the cigarette lighter, and install an old type switch in it's place.

I've got a '74 B GT, i moved the o'drive switch too,but i got a 2nd hand gearlever with the switch on the gearknob, which was a different fit,so i cut both levers in half and got them welded together ,extended the wiring, works a treat, and i made the hole where the switch was bigger and fitted a voltmeter ,was well pleased with myself 😊.

Nice video! I bought an MGB years ago just to get an overdrive transmission and a bunch of parts and plan on putting it into mine at some point. I hate the OD switch on top of the gear shift knob, and so I plan to use the Horn button on the turn signal stalk. I have a new steering wheel that has a horn button in the center, and found a MG Experience forum member had some info on a latching relay for the OD system so you can use a momentary switch to turn it on or off.

Thanks. While I do work to stay fit, I am doing the push-ups to bring awareness to childhood cancers. St. Jude's does great work. I thought participating in their fundraising campaign is the least I could do.

      @@AlexPlatacisJust a suggestion:
That overdrive switch replacement is going to be a doozy. The reverse switch is way easier. I just did that on my 79 limited edition. The New unit/switch I put in during the ground up restoration went bad with less than 700 miles. These new switches are junk.
You will need to drop/lower the transmission. The cross member will need to be disconnected from the chassis only not from the transmission. You can also leave the drive shaft connected. I was able to loosen the isolation switch using an extension and a deep socket from above through the shift lever hole. . In a pinch you can switch the reverse switch until a new replacement arrives.then install the new one in the reverse location.

@American Patriot yeah. I was crushed when I felt that terminal break off. I could have just connected it, and let it be, but it felt loose. I kept pushing it hoping it would tighten up. But ultimately the likeness was the terminal giving way.

@@AlexPlatacis The Good thing is that you can access the switch from above. You will need to also remove the top access plate around the shift hole to give you more room.

I really have enjoyed all these videos-including this one. In this case I would not have gone this route. Just a personal point of view of course.
I have a 1980 LE with overdrive and having the o/d incorporated into the knob is incredibly functional and in my opinion not only works well but comes to hand very efficiently.
The switch in the lighter hole doesn’t really work esthetically for me and is a bit awkward to reach.
If you like projects within projects maybe use a lathe to make a wood replacement cone and then drill a round hole into the top of it. Maybe then put an electric button on top with the MG emblem. This would give you form as well as function.
I think if it were from the factory with the switch located in the lighter hole and some ingenious character (such as you!) came up with the idea of putting it on top of the gear shift lever, you’d say what a cool idea!
But the above offered with great respect, you’re a very capable guy. Keep those videos coming! Thx.

      All true...
In fact, the idea to put it in the center console was a collaboration with my wife.
When we started mixing model year components, it just made sense. (69 tail lights, 74 chrome bumper etc..)

Alex, I'm with you there on replacing that hideous shifter knob. The wooden one looks sooo much prettier. My only concern with locating the O/D switch on the center console like that is in ease of access. Are you going to be able to find the switch and switch easily while you are travelling 40 mph? My 74 has the overdrive switch (which is not functional) on the wiper arm on the column. Push forward to engage. Otherwise, that installation looks very smart. Good luck on replacing that O?D switch on the tranny.

I bought new sun visors and had hoped it would be easy to replace! What the heck!!? Do I need to buy me a rivet gun? I'm kind of stumped.....ugh

Yeah, there are a few places on the MGB where rivets are used. Harbor freight is good for that though. Not much to the tool.
