- In this video, I determine that my 1977 MGB's Overdrive in the transmission wasn't working because of the oil pump (jammed). I also show how to test the solenoid. This car has the blue label later overdrive.
Very interesting. I couldn’t get the OD to work on a 79 B years ago. Took it to a shop that only worked on British sports cars. They wouldn’t touch anything mechanical about the OD, and as a matter of habit would give up on any OD problem that wasn’t electrical.
Just now diagnosing and attempting to fix a 70 B inop overdrive. The car was sitting since 2009.. "worked when parked" : ). Thanks and thumbs up on the RBB delete.
I also did the '70 front grill! love the fishmouth. Did you get your OD working?
Glad you made a film of the overdrive issue. I'v got problems with the OD on our 79,MGB and it is this is helping me a lot thans for it!
Hey, great, hopefully you can get it figured out. First check if you do have power to the solenoid
my 75 mgb overdrive was inoperable for 20 yrs, not willing to spend $600 to have someone look at. i pulled the inspection cover off and found metal shavings wedged the oil pump piston in the off position. i removed, sprayed 4 cans of brake cleaner, lots of compressed air and 4 dollars of o-rings and viola...started to work. been good ever since.
Thank you so much for posting the video. The guys that work on these OD units try to get your 401K when they work on them for you.😅
Excellent 👍🇬🇧
Thanks for the video Bill
Thanks for watching!!
If not an electrical issue try replacing all the o-rings and using a straight 30 wt motor oil. You get a quieter transmission.
I need to know it the MGB 1979 overdrive transmission use diferent clutch Plate ?
nope, same clutch components for overdrive or regular 4-speed
Great job thanks👍🇬🇧
How did you remove the pump body after it was installed incorrectly? I am having trouble removing the pump after I installed it wrong.
I got up in with a hook and you can pull it downward. You should be able to look inside the body and see the top of it where it is hitting the cam.
I had the same problem- a half inch drill bit fits snugly into the bottom end of the pump assembly which allows you to wiggle it about and free it.
I thought I had a oiled-up clutch. It was slipping bad! NOPE! totally dry, no leak from rear main or front transmission seal..... Must be in the OD. Both in and out of OD. Anyone?
