A French Composer , a German orchestra, an Islandic women playing the organ and not least an Italian conducting ii! What a super presentation to this glorious symphony,!!!
That's the beauty of an orchestra. We who are members of one just ask that you have a heart for music, an instrument, and a willingness to play and you'll be accepted.
My local orchestra (Dallas Symphony Orchestra) performed this when I was 17-years-old (in 2009) and I'll never forget it. I went the week of my birthday. The organ blasted me back against my seat as I was overwhelmed with involuntary tears of joy and triumph. The notes soared as the orchestra seemingly bathed the entire symphony hall with light, swept space clean, and left nothing but the joy of an unobstructed effort.
Well said. I have similar experiences with such music in concert halls, especially when I sit relatively close where the sound is louder. The ending of Shostakovich 5th is similar. But the timpani is coupled with a bass drum which makes it even more overwhelming.
Good words. I experienced similar in Prague some years ago when I sat in front of Prague Philharmonic, and they were playing Richardt Strauss "Also sprach Zarathustra"! Suddenly, without the slightest "telling me" teardrops ran down my face...and I was completely in the hands of the music and a wonderful orchestra!
Unbelievably well performed. This work is a challenge to any orchestra - much of everything. Preserving the dynamics is the key, which is proven by in this great performance.

I really haven't been aware of or heard much Saint Saens but, after this, I think that will change. I love the transition at about the 30:30 mark which left me with goose bumps. I have listened to this piece three times today. To me, this is what music should provide the listener and it did. Absolutely lovely!
Yes, absolutely, the transition from the end of 3rd movement into the 4th one , with the orgue incipit is the best part of all the concert, along with the 4 hands piano shortly after the beginning of the 4th movement. I enjoy comparing that bit in various interpretations and I have found out that some make use of a firm heystroke at the end of the sequence (played by the right piano player) which becomes the "sparking signal" for the whole orchestra (orgue first) to move on... I always loved C S-S since I was a young boy, classical music is a divine gift to humankind !!! Thank you Lord for the music !

What a fabulous performance of a fabulous symphony! Been a firm favourite over 60 years! Great orchestra, conductor, organist! Loved it! Thanks for the post. Jamshed K Delvadavala Mumbai.
Possibly the best conductor out there right now. He re-imagines the works he conducts and they come out sounding almost new again. He also seems to get the strongest, most involved, most emotional playing from the orchestra. His Mozart symphonies on Harmonia Mundi show the same. He pays attention to the details and brings out new sonorities we don't often get to appreciate in those works we have heard one hundred times or more, and though not slow, he does not rush the orchestra through passages most conductors seem to pay little attention to and hurry through.

Thank you for posting this splendid performance of this great masterpiece! I have enjoyed the music of Saint-Saens since I was 12 years old- over 60 years ago! He left us a superb legacy, filled with wonderful music- the symphonies, so many concerti, symphonic poems, chamber music, and operas [beyond Samson et Dalila, there is Henry VIII, Etienne Marcel and Proserpine, at least, which should be much better known] a great composer. thank you!

I've not heard a better performance, maybe not one as good. I agree with Tom Aldrich about the sublime section. When I first heard this symphony, that section with the pianos transported me beyond my senses into utter blackness and a sense of serenity.
Outstanding performance, I like it. Apkalna is a brilliant organist who understands this score very well, her performance with Mariss Janson/ Concertgebow Orchestra bares the similarly in fine execution of organ. Very fine. Bravo.

^ There are indeed some Performances which leave one speechless… And this one belongs to it! Absolute Bravissimo! 👏
It is a show stopper, without doubt Saint-Saens best work. I heard it played in Sydney Opera House, what an experience! This is indeed a wonderful rendition, brilliant tempi throughout.
Why is this performance so amazing? Part of it is the slower tempo in parts. The first movement is almost 12 minutes long even when subtracting 30 seconds between the beginning of the video and the first entrance of the orchestra. Both Paul Paray and Charles Munch made famous recordings that are now frequently cited as references. The first movement in both of these recordings is about 10 minutes long. So how much difference does it make when another recording is almost two minutes longer? The answer is absolutely huge. One conductor who was known as for interpreting things much slower is Sergiu Celibidache. Listeners are wildly divided over his interpretations, but for me some of them are quite amazing. In this recording, Riccardo Minasi in my opinion is doing much the same thing. There is so much detail, so many things that I have never heard from any other conductor. After at least a dozen listenings there is no other interpretation that I want to hear. He stops time. Not only am I mesmerized by what he is doing, it immediately pushed me to explore everything else I can find by Riccardo Minasi. I think this may be the slowest performance I have been able to find, and I have done quite a bit of checking. The miraculous part is that it seems to go on forever and at the same time it seems to be over in almost no time at all. I was out walking while listening last night and about 38 minutes of music went by so fast that I couldn't believe it. Let's add to this fact that this marvelous orchestra plays as well as any orchestra I have ever heard, both in live performances and on recordings. What should we mention first? The strings? The woodwinds? The brass? The percussion? The whole group is a wonder! The recording quality is incredible. And as a bonus to all the rest, look at the way the video was shot. I find this whole thing an absolute miracle. I would say that this performance is one of the ten best I have heard in my lifetime, and I would not pick any other as superior. The fact that it is live is absolutely stunning.
This is the first recording I've heard where I haven't had trouble keeping track of the beat during the 1st main theme. Usually my ear follows the off-beat strings but this orchestra's balance is excellent!
INCREDIBLE 😍!!! After That Last MAJESTIC TRIUMPHANT CHORD, Can You Even Blame Saint Saens For INTENTIONALLY Not Attempting To Write Another Symphony After This One !!!!!?......
I just listened to a performance of this piece by Jarvi and the Paris Symphony when RUclips automatically brought this up next. Normally I would have started listening to another work, but this started up before I could switch. I mention this because I had not meant to listen to this, but, in every way this is superior to the Jarvi version. This is not only the best performance of this symphony I have heard, it is one of the best performances of any symphony I have heard. (I am 74 and have been listening a long time)
Pipe organ‘s sound looks like the arrival of Almighty God This wonderful performance will transcend sorrows and joys of our transient lives less than 100 years
Saw this performed live at St. George’s Hall Bradford last night by the Belgian National Orchestra. Storming performance, ten minute standing ovation. When the organ came crashing in like a thunderbolt at the start of the final movement I nearly fell over the Dress Circle balcony! 😮😲
Yeah,....that organ entrance always wakes people up, after being lulled into a sense of quiet peace in the 2d movement. I always get ready for it by an advance study of the audience faces, as I know they will be stunned....and they always are.
Was für ein überwältigendes Werk! Und was für eine Bandbreite an Emotionen? Von zart-rührend und vorsichtig-zweifelnd über perlend-strahlend bis zu majestätisch-kraftvoll...
My mother was a violinist in orchestras around the world. She always had a love hate relationship with this piece. It was always one of her favorites, and loved to be able to play it. However, the practice for it and the actual playing of it were brutal. Not only is it not an easy piece to play, the organ can be a bit of a distraction. She said she would feel the vibrations in her seat when the organ was played with the stops pulled.
Magnifico! Bravo! This rendering of this symphony has given me inspiration when I play this piece in our local orchestra. The energy coming from this orchestra was astounding!
A French Composer , a German orchestra, an Islandic women playing the organ and not least an Italian conducting ii! What a super presentation to this glorious symphony,!!!
Iveta Apkalna is Latvian, not Icelandic, but yes, excellent remark on the diversity that brought us this outstanding concert

Semplicemente superbi!!
This is the first recording I've heard where I haven't had trouble keeping track of the beat during the 1st main theme. Usually my ear follows the off-beat strings but this orchestra's balance is excellent!
I actually like the contrasting beats.....if done well, it sounds like there's a floating exchange of motif between the two.
Molt bona interpretació. Direcció enèrgica i magistral de Ciccardo Minasi la Organista sensacional.
What do you get when add genius to massive hard work and dedication?
This symphony!
A compelling, beautiful rendition of this wonderful Symphony thank you.
Very passionate, emotional and fine precision. The organist is exceptional and outstanding!
Great and satisfying presentation. A big thank you to everyone who made this possible
I'm hearing this composer for the first time and WOW! This blew me away! THANK YOU!
INCREDIBLE 😍!!! After That Last MAJESTIC TRIUMPHANT CHORD, Can You Even Blame Saint Saens For INTENTIONALLY Not Attempting To Write Another Symphony After This One !!!!!?......
It would be very difficult to surpass this.
@@englishrose47 You Got That Right !!!..
What can possibly be said but "Yes!!"
Such a wonderful Orchestra. They play so well - truly top-tier
(I am 74 and have been listening a long time)
Jarvi conducting this at BBC Proms is more spirited, but I agree the individual and overall musicianship of this performance is superior.
_Thank GOD that they were able to bring in a real angel to sit in on organ!_ 😂
Frankfurt Radio Orchestra. One of the greats today.
Thank you so much for giving me wonderful time during stressful days due to Coronavirus.
MY GOD...THIS ORCHESTRA IS INCREDIBLE AND IVETA IS SUPERB!!!!
La musique apaise les âmes tourmentées. Merci pour votre talent.
For me, is the best orchestra
saint-seans is underated seriously
Magnífico impecável, adorei a organista passa confiança.
Spectacular performance! One of the best I have heard of this wonderful symphony.
1st movement (no action)
0:32 begins
*2nd movement (critical)
22:41 begins | 36:53 whirlwind | 37:17 transition |
Pipe organ‘s sound looks like the arrival of Almighty God
This wonderful performance will transcend sorrows and joys of our transient lives less than 100 years
Enhorabuena! 👏🏻
Un des chefs-d’œuvre de Camille saint-saëns
Saw this performed live at St. George’s Hall Bradford last night by the Belgian National Orchestra. Storming performance, ten minute standing ovation. When the organ came crashing in like a thunderbolt at the start of the final movement I nearly fell over the Dress Circle balcony! 😮😲
Yeah,....that organ entrance always wakes people up, after being lulled into a sense of quiet peace in the 2d movement. I always get ready for it by an advance study of the audience faces, as I know they will be stunned....and they always are.
Refined, exciting and breath-taking! I was mesmerized! Bravi!
Awesome rendition of this masterpiece by a distinguished german orchestra.
Indeed.
.. not forgetting the very distinguished Latvian organist
Wow! Wonderful ! One of the most excited versions I have ever heard. Congratulations!!
first time I watch this conductor. excellent
Maravilhoso❤❤ Sempre que escuto eleva meu astral! Sem palavras.
Excelenta interpretare a unui genial compozitor francez.Patrimoniu muzical universal.
the lyracism is beautiful in this work . also use of fugato in the third movement shows respect to Beethoven and Mozart.
Bravo! Such elegance and precision. Gave me chills.
That moment at 30.34 - I’m holding my breath. The organ blows everyone away. Cannot hear it too many times 😲
Magnifico! Bravo! This rendering of this symphony has given me inspiration when I play this piece in our local orchestra. The energy coming from this orchestra was astounding!
A fantastic interpretation of a famous song by Camille Saint Saens. Many thanks for a wonderful experience.
Wonderful! Majestic! Every movement played with perfection.
