This is so beautiful and poignant. After nearly 20 years of writing about climate change from here in South Africa, and feeling as though the words are impotent whispers from the corner of the room while a tornado sweeps through, it can be really difficult to find the reason to keep on keeping on when it feels no one is listening and things are changing. And now... well... we can't bring about the change we need in order to prevent the kind of loss that's coming. Truly, it's a daily 'adventure' to just keep one's nose above water. I started 2020 by doing the same thing Dahr recommends, and which I know has served me well: getting back out into nature.
This can be such a lonely, lonely road...

Thank you so much for this talk. I resonate so much with Dahr's approach to ceremony. The only thing that helps me cope with profound grief at the loss of nature is to tap into gratitude. As I walk along the beach and spot a long-billed curlew or an oystercatcher I say a prayer: "You may not be here tomorrow, but I'm so grateful you're here today."

Thank you Dahr and Jim. Reality is traumatic, and there is no getting around it for the sensitive and empathetic. The insensitive have defenses or are not as effected. Dahr leads by examole: that we are powerless over what is happening. Illusions of democracy and control, are just that: Illusions. Facing reality is grieving over lost illusions.

Hi Jem... thanks for your work.
What helps me is an understanding that the human species can not be separated from nature. In other words, we are to play our part in the unfolding of earth's sacrifice... we are her hands, and in her hands, like all other life forms. All of us, and each one of us, without exception. Being connected to this "we" is what keeps us alive and my heart open in the face of the transfiguration of life on this planet.
And, yes, on a more personal note... slowing down... there's nowhere to go. Daily being present with nature, loving her with the crying of child that watches its mother dying. And with the silence of a man who has seen no separation. Daily art in the garden keeps my spirit alive. Friends... rarely there is a soul to share the burden, or the communion.
Until the day we get to go home... I like what Dahr said, hold nothing back. The heart burns with the fuel that takes us to the door, then its purpose is done. Make sure you have given every piece of it away by the time you arrive. Life as we know it is but a seed that opens in that moment. First there is an immediate sense of remembering...
    Much love to yous

I feel anger towards the people who profit from the destruction of the nature and the millions of clueless morons who do not give a shit!!! The situation in Brazil is horrific right now!!! The country had its carnival and now Nature is striking back with lethal floods right here in Santos,Belo Horizante,Sao Paulo and Rio De Janiero!!!!

Dear sir, as independent and mostly disenfranchised citizens, who have very little or none say (voice) in policy making towards the environment (be it state or international level). What can we do ?! In the next ten years, even as a large part of humanity and it's tremendous folly equates to extinction ?!

No talking with friends for me. Absolutely everybody I know is clueless and believe the world is just going to keep going on fine. Only need a few more lanes at McDonalds.

Oh wow another lonely voice from South Africa - Leonie I would love to connect! Dahrs' mention of "Nature and Meditation" is what has given my life complete meaning and depth - I have no fears, no regrets, only joy and happiness and excitement at being alive! Personally I landed by accident in the Vipassana meditation culture and this radically changed my understanding of meaning completely - there is no "Self" (so no-one who dies), there is no "End" (everything changes, changes) and only if this is misunderstood is there Suffering.
When in fear - DO VIPASSANA!

Sounds human centric philosophy. So if say the cow we plan on murdering would only understand then it wouldn’t suffer?

In Milan Kundera's "Imortality" there was an old lady that whenever she got out, she would walk the streets holding a forget-me-not right in front of her nose.
For me it's a matter of adjusting the zoom factor through which you look around to a pleasurable setting most of the time. I have a reef tank and it's beautiful seen as a whole, but if I look closely, the corals are fighting and trying to kill each other.
The world is an infinite canvas and at any moment we have some control over which part we look at and at what level of detail. There are wonderful things happening during a collapse.
I did a doc series about the only true colonial fish in the world and I played around, shifting these perpectives constantly.
Here's the last chapter, which has collapse as the backdrop.

Please don't be offended, but aren't you two being a bit narcissistic here? The current civilisation was always going to fail ultimately. Why should you get stressed that it might happen in your lifetime? You are not responsible. Live your life thoughtfully, frugally, empathetically and wholeheartedly. Just smell the roses on your way.
