Here in the States the Cleveland dominated in pro-stock drag racing. They were so successful that NHRA kept throwing weight at them until they got what they wanted, a Chevrolet in the winner's circle. They also remained in NASCAR until the FR9 engine came out. The NASCAR Cleveland ended up being a Clevor (Windsor short block with Cleveland heads). But the architecture remained largely unchanged. You could still bolt stock valve covers on a NASCAR Cleveland head. The SBC had the have at least two major cylinder head architecture changes to keep up. It wasn't really until the 5.0 movement when the Fox came out that the Windsor really started to shine as a true performance engine. The parts the aftermarket developed for the 5.0 bolted right into the Windsor and in stock form had 51 more cubes. Add to that the fact that you can go 408ci with a factory 351W block easily and the relative ease of finding a Windsor block vs. a Cleveland now and that's why the Windsor is currently more popular over here.
This car is basically God tier here in Australia. It will get more looks than any supercar and that's from non car people as well, that's how iconic it is.
Did you guys like your Ugly? I actually looked up the company and am in the market! So, thanks for getting that sponsorship. Anyway, a shaker in the US is mounted to the engine air intake and sticks through the hood the same as y'all. It doesn't even have to take in air. When I was 18 I had a 1979 Trans Am with a shaker hood. The "scoop" pointed backwards and there was no air inlet! If it is affixed to the hood, it is called a scoop. So, probsably the same.
Most people call them shakers here in the states as well. Thanks for the great videos guys great work. Awesome builds. My favorite car channel by far. 🤟👍👍
But over here AMC and Chrysler did "shakers" from the factory. Some of us dream of what could have happened to our Falcon after 1970, especially seeing what happened down under.
Hi Al and Woody, love your work. I have been a mechanic for a lot of years, worked on heaps of 60s, 70s and 80s v8 muscle cars and done my fair share of drag racing and built a few race engines. In regards to the axle hop issue with this black XW/XY don't forget to consider the engine mounts, for a simple test of the theory put a cable or chain from the left front of the head to the sway bar mounting bolt and lay a burnout, I have found this to fix axle hop on more than one occasion.
Respect to Old Cock as I love these old girls an it just awesome to see them on the road every so often . Love it when someone puts in this much work an give the old girl the respect she due.
That is an amazing build, it has all the right stuff and nothing more. You could drive it anywhere too. Last is his amazing attention to detail really shows.

@22:00 this gave me a good laugh because you perfectly described my little brother and the way he treated his first car (including the "vs commo" bit). I remember telling him how bad it was for the auto but he never listened, never really got punished either because it never actually broke (though he admitted when I showed him this that it did develop intermittent problems shifting - according to him the "fix" was to slam it in reverse a few times....)
That's a clean looking Trans Am in the background there... First car I ever turned a wrench on was a Trans Am. My first girlfriend bought a trashed one with birthday money so she could rebuild it. It was an interesting year.
It's a Shaker here too. Another cool history lesson on the Aussie versions of muscle cars. Folks say that the Cleveland got better flowing heads than the Windsor, and I dont think you could get the Windsor with the 4V heads. Keep it up.
GTHO,s had modified suspension, rear end had an extra leaf in the springs and track rods, sway bar set up with larger brake drums on a Detroit locker diff. The front brakes were ventilated disc brakes with heavier springs and swaybar, also the GTs had a quicker turning ratio steering box. They also came brand new from the factory with options like power steering, air conditioning .
select D for maximum respect!! love it!! people look at me weird if I ever say that line hahaha Love the XY though... helped a mate build his own down in Vic... Loved that car!!
The Aussie "Clevelands" were actually cast and built in Geelong Victoria and should probably be called "Geelong" motors. The Australian factory didn't have the thin wall casting technology that the US factory had and the engines were a bit heavier than the true Clevelands. Back in the day NASCAR teams used to use the Australian blocks because they were a bit heavier and tougher.
I think the Windsor caught on here because anything with a Cleveland head was a BOSS model and therefore costs 10 times what it should. Your XYGT is a very cool build.
I cannot believe how much these Falcons are worth. I had a 72 ute and an xa. The ute had a great ride . I left school in 1970 and these vehicles were reliable easy to repair comfortable on country roads and gravel and through paddocks. Poor mpg but great for long Aussie journeys. The EJ wagon I had did not have a heater or demister. I would open the quarter vent and wore ugg boots and a jacket. My mates xp Falcon had ametal box near your feet as a vent for summer. The 72 utehad full heating light steering and was reallycomfortable.
First, in the states, the Cleveland is still the motor of preference, we just use the Windsor more due to costs. W motors are easier and cheaper to come by. If cost is not a guiding factor or concern, always go for the Cleveland. We have tons of hipo goodies for them. Second, a shaker scoop is a shaker scoop. Other non-shaker scoops are "insert type name here" induction. Ram air, cowl, etc. Just wanted to clear up any confusion.
1) they call 'em shakers in the usa too 2) glad aussies took a liking to the clev as it's a great head design and now some of the best parts for them come from you guys. love aussie muscle cars.
So here in the states Ford went with the Windors mainly cause it was cheap. But there was a variant of the Clevland that was wider called the Modified or 351M . It also came in a 400 cube version. Cleveland heads also bolt directly to Windsor blocks and that mod was called a Clevor. Edelbrock sold conversion intakes . You had to also get custom pistons. Ford also had some heads in aluminum under their SVO brand. Back in around 95 we built a SVO headed 302 Clevor. And made about 450 hp and it revved to about 8500.
There was a guy down the road in the late 70s i was like 9 and he had a red XW GT and he would lay rubber up the road on a regular basis ,my neibour had a light gold XA Fairmont 302 company car ,Mates mum had a silver Landau 351 ,Taxis were XB and XC Fairmonts ,ZH Farlane on next street ,my brothers mate had a yellow HK Manaro ,they were every where back then
In the US it's also called a shaker hood scoop. For the same reason. We had two versions, the boss 302 like on that one and the CJ, which had a point to go with the hood line.
Awesome...very interested in how the throttle body and fuel rail was installed on manifold. Might be my next change to my Cleveland. Great video on one of the best cars Australia built
A lot of those single plane Edelbrock manifolds had bosses for nitrous injectors, so it seems like tapping them for regular fuel injectors is just a natural evolution.
That shaker design, on top of being included in our vintage mustangs as people have mentioned, was also used on the '03-'04 Mach 1. I own one and it definitely torques the scoop under load. Also, I love watching some of the Australian "Touring Car Masters" stuff on RUclips where they still race this sort of awesome vintage stuff. Equivalent to our old "Trans Am" kinda series in the States I guess.
here in the states most ford guys prefer the Cleveland also, it is the more saught after engine for a small block build, just a better engine, guys have even been know to redrill a Windsor block to fit Cleveland heads, we also call the hood scoop a Shaker when its mounted to the engine hehe.
Need some merch? get it here! www.theskidfactory.com

Ford also had some heads in aluminum under their SVO brand. Back in around 95 we built a SVO headed 302 Clevor. And made about 450 hp and it revved to about 8500.
Beautiful car. Very well done. Love the rack conversion and the Holley efi.
In the case of a 70's Hemicuda the scoop had the acronym IQECAG which was short for Incredible Quivering Exposed Cold Air Grabber. How cool is that!
Ian Syme dude that is gay
Never be afraid to keep in touch with your gay side!
There was a guy down the road in the late 70s i was like 9 and he had a red XW GT and he would lay rubber up the road on a regular basis ,my neibour had a light gold XA Fairmont 302 company car ,Mates mum had a silver Landau 351 ,Taxis were XB and XC Fairmonts ,ZH Farlane on next street ,my brothers mate had a yellow HK Manaro ,they were every where back then
I love the creativity and persistence with the "Old Cock" easter eggs! Drinking a squash to your good fortune! Keep it up gents!
Al, yeah, we call it a Shaker Hood here in the U.S. too. Love that car!
In the US it's also called a shaker hood scoop. For the same reason. We had two versions, the boss 302 like on that one and the CJ, which had a point to go with the hood line.
Awesome, thanks for showing this car! I'm hoping to modernize my 351M in my old truck someday, so seeing this is an inspiration. Cheers!
What a beautiful car
Yes! Friday just became a whole lot better!
Awesome...very interested in how the throttle body and fuel rail was installed on manifold. Might be my next change to my Cleveland. Great video on one of the best cars Australia built
I'd heard of a shaker, never knew WHY it's called that. Neat.
Exhaust specialist, not a limp body part! So good.
What a nice build. BTW the 351 Cleveland is the engine of choice here in the US by in-the-know ford engine builders.
A lot of those single plane Edelbrock manifolds had bosses for nitrous injectors, so it seems like tapping them for regular fuel injectors is just a natural evolution.
Great car, great description from Al.
Beautiful car wish I had one
This, along with the 1969 Beaumont SD396, is on my crazy rare muscle car wishlist
here in the states most ford guys prefer the Cleveland also, it is the more saught after engine for a small block build, just a better engine, guys have even been know to redrill a Windsor block to fit Cleveland heads, we also call the hood scoop a Shaker when its mounted to the engine hehe.
I’m glad he got carried away, that is a gorgeous car!
I'm a Holden guy but that is a very sweet XY. Awesome build.
Good on you mate you are keeping it all alive the passed
