Hello from the state government of Western Australia! I'm on a project in the health department and you have NO IDEA how many reporting structure shake-ups we have gone through. Even private consulting firms have come in to restructure us. A few years ago, KPMG came in and told management they could fire 20% of staff (what a coincidence, the exact number management wanted to hear) and within a week we had to hire a small army of temps and then hire everyone back eventually because KPMG did not care to understand the actual work we were doing. Every time we get a new minister or government, they decide they want to bring in the private sector, not realising that allowing the private sector causes efficiency to plumet and the gov is forced to learn the same lesson the hard way all over again. The big four consulting firms deserve to be dragged before a royal commission before being banished from Australia.
Sacking 20% of staff ALWAYS costs taxpayers more than keeping them. Through loads of hidden expenses and the loss to the economy of the spending power and economic multiplier that their wage and spending creates
The team that creates this "Utopia" welcomes the letters to provide further inspiration. They mentioned that most of scenario is based on real/near real cases. So feel free to drop them an email.
@@elksalmon84 You can watch these a few times to get all the details ... I just spotted the sign language interpreter ( in a closed meeting with no deaf people) translating "f*ck off". Just a background detail. Chef's kiss
My wife and I recently binge watched the every episode. As a former government employee I can confirm that this series should indeed be classified as a documentary (as scary as that sounds given how much is spent running the government).
I watch this, laugh, and then feel their pain, and then share the pain, and then it leads to anger for working with these muppets. It’s that on the money, it’s incredible!! Poor Tony and Nat
It's scarily accurate. Remember one's perceptions are one's reality, this was said in a meeting I attended when the moderator was trying to make a point that was clearly wrong.
I'm from the UK, and whenever these clips come up I always watch them. It is hilarious, but it also makes me want to reach through the screen and punch the idiots in these skits. It is SO accurate and true it's unreal. The red tape and all that beaucracy even in the lower tier of councils here in the UK is awful. Nothing ever gets done. Our society is regressing and no one seems to realise.
I had a colleague that thought of one of her achievements of her career is that she performance managed a person out. She then resigned soon after due to exhaustion.
We had the efficiency brigade as well. I was driving a forklift at the time. I did a pick up to take to wrap and strap and then to outside for a stack of pallets. The wrap and strap had broken and the operator was on break. Fixed the wrapper got the pallets and the stapper was broken on return. Fixed that and continued back to the stop watch operator. I was questioned why it took so long. The explanation should have had the wrapper strapper being fixed but that would cost too much and down time extreme. So they said. This was 10 years before I retired and when I did retire only partial fixes had been carried out. I did wish them well before I left. Turned out the system was 33 years old. By the by the efficiency people's report was never published down to us.
This show is sooooo infuriating and I absolutely love it!!! bahahahaha! I've watched every episode multiple times and still die a little every time I hear HR might be involved.
Can't accept that this is a documentary... Tony had a win at the end of the UIN episode... This doesn't happen in real life... Fantastic series! Great cast delivering on great writing! Kudos Working Dog... (I really identify with Bert, the old guy with the slide rule... 🙂)
To the whole damned world. As a German, I'm _starving_ for well made comedy shows (German producers have proven utterly incapable of such a feat, with a few exceptions). FFS, it's 2024; why do antiquated insular publishing practices like this still exist at all?!
How can i watch this in Germany? There is no streaming possible and you cannot find the DVDs anywhere. I am willing to pay for shipping if i could just find an opportunity ...
A few seasons are available on Australian Netflix so if you've got a VPN and a Netflix account you should be able to watch some of it there I think the rest should be on either on ABC iview (the streaming app for the public broadcaster here who ran the show) or in the ABC store. That might be harder to access from Germany but with a VPN I'm sure you could find a way.
Anyone who has worked in/with govt, all you have to do is add the ridiculous "bucket of money/have to spend what you don't need end of FY (waste it) or you won't get it next year" and "guest speakers using WRONG words in wrong contexts (to the absolute joy of senior bosses, because it is SOOO innovative)" wheras everyone else at the "motivation session" just thinks "wrong words/what an idiot/are we all 9 years olds??? " while dying to get out of there............... and you've nailed it.
I've seen the one about the sign pointing to the statue a few times now, and it just occurred to me that they had an easy solution - remove the effing sign.
I remember being at a risk management meeting in Mental Health setting, the first 15 mins of the meeting were people introducing themselves and their roles!!!
Oh these are priceless, even after seeing the original series on Oz TV. The schoolboy work experience blockchain expert clip had me in fits. 😂 Anyone who has worked in the Australian public sector will recognise that these scenarios are close to the mark.
Not sure why Australia TV commissioners thought the world needed the Office Australia . As a satire Utopia is just pure gold with its take on contemporary office political correctness and just hilarious absurdity. Fantastic script and cast.
At "matrix reporting structures" I had to pause and get a drink.... alcoholic..... 10 years of sobriety.... (well, 10 minutes is closer but I am sure those who understand will agree....). And this was after I had not reached for the bottle after " performance managed"....
An incredible series no question. I found myself unable to continue watching it without wanting to scream in frustration as I am sure this is way way way too close to how government 'works'.
Scarily accurate, someone already said i know. Just one massive inaccuracy...judging by the light levels coming through the windows they all would have finished work about 3 hours ago and be out eating lunch on the tax payer's dollar discussing where they would have lunch tomorrow and then laugh about how they would charge it as a business expense.
Remember Q.A. introduction into Mfg to allow tendering on Govt projects. Then had Vic rail do a surprise inspection because I wasn't conforming with the Q.A. procedures they had in place. They approach on a power trip hoping to tear me a new one & say I'm not providing them with complete documentation they send with products they wanted repaired. He has a list of products to address and as he reads them out I reach behind me for a folder & have everything documented. I said yes it is a problem but unfortunately when you send the goods your staff don't know how to do a double sided photo copy and so only send the front page of your 2pg document. I then have to setup a procedure to identify and track goods for receiving, pending and completed works and then return to you with our written report & your 1 page. Can see the jaw drop on the Vic Rail Q.A.Mgr and he ends by saying O.K. how about we start with a clean slate. I would hate to be dealing with the H.R. BS created by the DEI scheme now but Q.A. was enough for me at the time.

Correct you don't need to waste big bucks on consulting firms, just foster and retain a team of core experience and SMEs and incentivise them to stay.
