God it is *SO* incredibly validating to hear John talking about difficulty in games the way he is. Like, I play Bayonetta and DMC at max difficulty. I do under-leveled challenges in rpg's, I love difficulty and self imposed challenges. Having easy modes or modifiers to help people get into a game is an objectively good thing. Let more people play how they want, and experience things they wouldn't otherwise. If I'd told one of my best friends they **HAD** to experience DMC5 on Devil Hunter difficulty on their first time through (as their first game in the series), they would've dropped it and never picked it up again, but now they're clearing Bloody Palace runs as a way to unwind from work, and we've bonded so much over the series.

It's true and false. More often than not, games that don't have an insultingly easy mode for players who do not care and that can be physically turned on and off in a menu will suffer from game design decisions to accommodate those players. That's why Jrpgs are so easy in general, to take into account players who do not play, do not explore, and rush through the story. It's not an invalid way to play but I feel like I am the one being punished for interacting with the game to much as a result. Elden Ring is the same and so are many other games. I'd rather have a difficulty slider that allow others to have insane stats or shitty enemies and let devs create the experience they want.

The only time I dislike a game’s difficulty is if the game creates a harder mode that isn’t hard. Ppl like to say to limit yourself using mechanics fo make it more difficult but I think games should just be balanced.

I agree with the idea that people are way, way, WAY too hung up on game difficulty in the souls series and in general, and wear it too much like a badge of honor. However, while I believe that Elden Ring and other games definitely need more accessibility options just for ease of use and play, I do think that specifically for the kind of story they are trying to tell with these games meta-narratively, an easy mode would take away from that. The "easy mode" is getting help from friends, using ashes, using overpowered weapons or spells, using everything the game gives you to overcome the challenges. Nothing stops you from continuing to level past the pitifully low level of 125 for the online multiplayer meta.
I think the beauty of these games is they're as hard or as easy as you want to make them. Everything has a cheese method to beat it, every challenge can be reduced to a level that fits your own comfort by way of getting help from friends or making use of the tools in the game to cover for your own mistakes. But the beauty of these games is that they ask you to rise to the challenge of them, and find a way to overcome it. They WANT you to win. The git gud bullshit is just toxic community members who take pride in masochism, and try to define how others should enjoy their game. Your way of having fun with these games is not everyone else's...
Anyways obligatory good job John, but Kathy really should just take over the channel by now. I know she'd respect the concept of a challenge you're expected to meet, and knows you'd never want to overcome her because she was going easy on you. /s

I felt really... alienated by Elden Ring. I got it because I knew friends who had it and saw a bunch of ads talking about how you can easily just play with friends and just that... and for me, it was the absolutely worst game I played. Now I might have had some situations that were odd... like multiple invaders (why does playing with friends mean you have to open up to invaders?) who I couldn't leave zones and waited 45 minutes to an hour because they avoided me till I just was bored and tired of it all. This doesn't mean it's a bad game, but the experience was not fun for me. And when someone makes me wait around, then barely wins the fight after getting an ambush because I'm barely paying attention and teabags me that's just... rude. Why try to make games unfun for others? I want everyone to have a fun time, and I don't think forcing pvp on people who don't want it helps. If anything, it just made me decide Fromsoft will never make a game I'll enjoy. And that seems not ideal if you want more people loving the games.

Examples of social anxiety in games... they're both glancing hits, where the primary focus isn't quite in the social dimension but that's still an essential component:
Original FF7, coming to your hometown and it seems weirdly fine, except that everywhere there are these weird black blobs that MIGHT be hooded figures, and they just say "...", and nobody else in these buildings has any dialogue indicating they're even aware those black things are there.
And I'm in love with how the Sinking City handles the supernatural horror- where you're going around the town and there's a spectrum of ambiguous weirdness but also the supernatural just kind of has its dick out. Over there. Casually. And everyone just kinda has to deal with it and try to normalize it.

I got mixed feelings when it comes to difficult games. I've stopped playing some games in the past (like Skyrim or Gran Turismo 2), because they got too easy after a while to the point where they started to bore me.
However I also had games that were annoyingly difficult, like Armored Core 6. It's hard to figure out a working tactic/loadout sometimes and a lot of hard bosses are at the end of long missions, making things pretty frustrating. And honestly for me it gets to a point where after beating a boss like that I don't even feel accomplished, I'm just happy that shit is over. In that game it just so happened that the very next mission also had a tough boss at the end and that made me quite the game for at least a week, because I was just not having a good time.

I find the argument that "people associate game difficulty with their identity" so strange and outdated now, because with how mainstream Elden Ring and Soulslikes have become, I can't imagine there are still many people who think beating those games gives them unique bragging rights. They're just regular games now, and their "difficulty" (at least for FromSoft titles) is meant to feel rewarding for the individual, not serve as some elitist filter.
But I do see this argument levied a lot, and it sometimes feels like a way to diminish people who think that selectable difficulty defeats the core purpose of these games, which is to feel the reward of overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges on a level playing field. Whether you just bang your head against the challenge with brute force, or devise a strategy with more tactical finesse, you're earning an undiluted victory, and that's what makes it feel good and worthwhile.
Ultimately, I feel like with good enough design, you can provide a near equal level of challenge for all types of players, without requiring difficulty selectors that create a class divide between the "real" players and the ones who choose to stay in normal and easy modes.
To be clear, I don't mean that EVERY game should be sans difficulty selections. I just think that some games benefit from their omission, and trying to shoehorn them into things like Elden Ring might not be such a great idea (especially since the game basically has its own emergent difficulty scaling based on player creativity).

On the discussion of game difficult I'll play devil's advocate a little, I do somewhat understand being disappointed in the way someone chooses to engage with a certain type of media. An example might be people who watch One Piece like Dragon Ball, it's objectively not the intention of the show and so although everyone entitled to their opinion it's ignorant and therefore flawed. Some people definitely validate themselves with difficulty but I think there's also a lot of people who enjoyed Elden Ring and feel an "easy mode" goes against some core value of FromSoft games.

He spent so long in that area not attacking that boss that it was inevitable that another player would swoop in.
Still, this makes me want to watch it all the more 😂

  • @alackofgames913
    @alackofgames913 2 месяца назад +6

I'm pretty bad at Dark Souls, but I'm also against giving it an easy mode because the struggle is important to the narrative. I understand people wanting to play games for fun, but that shouldn't be every game. If I don't like Fear and Hunger because I can lose limbs, I'm just not going to play it. I'm not going to yell at the dev to let me play without the feature.
(The Fear and Hunger thing is just a hypothetical example, I like the limb damage mechanics)
That said, I'm not against games that are similar to Dark Souls in mechanics having difficulty settings. If you want to make a game where you wander around a would, picking up tiny shreds of a narrative from environmental storytelling while platforming and fighting big bosses, and you don't really care for the "hostile environment fantasy" that's absolutely wonderful, go ahead and make it. It'll probably be good! Just also recognize that the difficulty of Dark Souls is important to the narrative or that game series in particular.

Ok I was thinking about it and I think I figured out why the whole game difficulty is so heated, and it seems like most of the fault is on the side of the people that want the easy mode. For example in this very video john unprompted just immediately calls anyone that doesn’t want a easy mode a loser with no life or identity. Which is really harsh and shitty, literally no room for nuance. Then the farther condensation of “I have a wife and I like to jog so I don’t need hard games to validate myself.” Just wow I had no stake in this argument at all but I desperately want to be on the opposite side of this shitfest.
