Learnt more about RC sailing in ten minutes with you than a month of web searching, thanks Andrew... This arm of RC is so different to cars, quads and planes...
There used be be no better evenings at my lake cottage with my friend Mack sailing our sailboats sitting on the dock. Sadly he passed away but this brought some nice memories back. Thanks Andrew :)
I always wanted to try one. It looks great my friend. I think I will get one to have some good fun on our hometown river. Thanks for posting and big salute from Slovenia, Pilot Robert
okay so its 2024... Ive had a hankering for something nautical as our family had trailer yachts for over 20 years and although Im flying rc aircraft I took one look at these 2 vids and hit the buy now button, thank you Andrew again! looking forward to sitting in the shade with perhaps a cold one at our local pond in the coming summer months.
She looks great on the water. Might have to wait for the tide to come in so you will have deeper water. All you need now is three small buoys and someone with a similar class boat. Had a little Peapod rc sailboat when I lived in Florida in the 70’s, lot of fun. Cheers
My experience...a boat launch is usually more free of weeds (with folks nearby to retrieve if you need it)....go for deep waters, after a range check (less to foul your rudder and keel)...expo on the rudder is your friend (just as you would have a lighter touch on the helm when you are close hauled). Fun to watch. Thanks!
Thanks mh. I have greased the rudder shaft, switched to a transmitter with Expo, and just waiting for the wind to be right for our local boat ramp. It would be perfect.
@AndrewNewton I'll test my luck. It's just an interesting topic. I would love to try a change from flying model aircraft. This specific volantex compass is nice because it comes rtr at a price that begs a deal. If the waves don't brake on it, I don't see a problem. Any suggestions on better offers around the same price point? Thanks
The boom appears 180 degrees out. The vang is usually on the bottom, that would make the boom even with the mailsail bottom. I'm going to mod mine to work correctly
That is far more effective than I thought it would be. No real trace of the horrendous weather helm that some suffer from and surprisingly good downwind in spite of the servo problem you spotted. It was making good progress when the weed wasn't snagging it. Of course it did have a very competent helmsman in charge :)
Well this is 2 years late but generally, the left “throttle” stick would be bringing the sails in and out. More throttle let’s them out, and less brings them in. Then the right stick simplely steers the rudder left and right.
That does look nice and relaxing. I got a ride as a child in a very small (single sail if I recall correctly) dinghy, and the guy taught me about tacking etc., and let me steer a bit. It was wonderful. Well now I have to go out and remove the snow in front of the driveway that the snow plow left for me :) G'day!
Definitely a sweet boat! Sometimes if it’s too windy it just blows out of control or off course. For the most part it cruises. I love it so much! It’s fun and easy to work on too of there are ever any issues! Great model! Great fun!
ha ha Very nice. Right now to do that I would need to have and ice-boat model LOL.. You are a brave fellow. Knee deep in the ocean, with the weeds and other things after your toes, lol.. I think you are right, the best place is a deep pond, under a shady tree and on a fairly calm day. It was nice you did get some fpv going, and it looked great. I would like to see the camera in the cockpit, so you can watch when you let the sails in and out like in real sailing. Good job. Happy Sailing
Unless there is quite a bit of fisheye on the camera, the booms are flexing, thus changing the shape of the sails. Great video as always very informative.
HI Andrew, appreciate the comprehensive setup and review video. Incredibly helpful as I start to explore my first RC sailboat purchase. This is top of my list so far. Have a great "duck pond" near by my home perfectly suited for a boat like this. However, my only concern is the off chance that I get stuck on either some underwater weed or a few rocks piled up and now I have a stranded boat. Do you know of a similar "Ready to sail" boat that also includes a backup propeller incase I need to bring it back to shore sans wind? Unfortunately I can't jump into a real boat to retrieve. Thank you!
Great fun! My nearest, potentially sailable, water is the local canal. But I'd need a ten foot hooky stick to retrieve the boat as we have 45deg slimy concrete sides and yeah, a lot of weed too. No, not the stuff people smoke, the pond type.
Thanks Andrew. Your vids are great . Really informative ! In fact I like this particular boat so much that I bought 1 ,and have 2 more on delivery soon. My plan is to hold the Compass Americas Cup on Silver Lake , Pattaya. if there are any more fogies want to join. And oh, sorry, but I sailed round the world on a catamaran to get here, so have converted my first Compass to a Trimaran. hehehe
I'm looking to get into the hobby and this was helpful. I live near a large (but very muddy) pond with no dock. I think I'll need to downsize from this model unless I want to trudge through the mud everytime.
I think I also seen some Whiting or other small-ish fish at one stage chasing keep earlier on in clip before the baby shark... Would be nice to trail a cam behind under water to see whats about & curious :D ;) Dad has a small trailer-sailer he rarely gets out, thinking one of these might be perfect for him & the farm dam... I know nothing about RC watercraft, but it looks fairly noob friendly & VolantexRC is a name I feel I can trust thanks to their planes... My only real question is, will spare be available in case of breakages? Thank you once again! :)
