Thanks Andrew, my wife has had a “Duckling” rc yatchet from back in the mid 80’s (lakesedge engineering, Toukley, NSW) which we both enjoy. Sort of worked out how to sail, but your explanation made a lot more sense. Many thanks.
I learned to sail in Boy Scouts. Had a 16ft. catamaran that was loads of fun. Its been a while since and forgot the terminology. Nice refresher course , thank you.
My wife and I used to live on a lake in Michigan and our neighbor's son visited him and he brought a small catamaran called a Hobie Cat. Lucky me, he asked if I would like to go for a sail and I jumped at the opportunity. I will never forget how exhilarating it was when the wind grabbed it and the acceleration was incredible. I mean it just absolutely lurched forward like a race car - I mean right now. I didn't know it could do that. I was always into fishing - that sure was neat.
So glad I found your video, thx a mil. Trying to figure out how the rigging works from the instructions was a nightmare!! Now to get her on the water. 😊
Just pulled the trigger on one from exhoby. Thanks for a great video, I'm even more exited now. Looks like a pretty top notch engineered kit for the coin.
Sold my 26 foot Nash 6 foot head room, 2 cyl diesel inboard engine etc couple years ago, bought it new 31 years ago lol.. yes watching your demonstration brought back lots of memories. Now we can get out on the water again via radio control nice.. The design looks like it will dig in and heel over nicely and probably be able to sail at a fair clip. Be interesting to see what the range is on the water, and another thought would be sailing it fpv wow, that would be just like sailing for real possibly. Something to try I suppose. lol Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Happy Sailing !! lol
When I was a lad we lived near Lake Lefroy, a large salt lake, perfect for land sailing. I was a member of the land sailing club there which basically had two types of land yacht, all steel pipe fun yachts and much faster streamlined racing yachts as well as a permanent clubhouse. The fastest yachts would easily reach 100 KPH. Being such a large area all of the Yachts were much bigger than the typical beach types of today. All the yachts were self built and designed. Nothing like the consumer Blowkart existed back then. My brother still races Blowkarts south of Perth, he is the Australian distributor for them in fact.
I am planning on making a Spinnaker for mine. I noticed you can buy that type of fabric at most fabric shops. As I have inly sailed a sunfish type sailboat, This would still be fun. I know my local lake offers small sailboat classes but at 60 I don't care to take that up. My friend tried to get me out on his sailboat. As he is blind, I would end up doing all the work and he would just bark out commands, thats not fun. I think my Grandson will enjoy helping me sail it, no barking on my boat allowed!
Can't wait to see it sail. I predict this boat will have a gennaker or genoa in the video after the next. Then a spinnaker in the fullness of time. Oh, the mods I can see coming...! And thanks for the transport breakdown segment, much appreciated.
Wow, a lovely model... I can smell the salt & spray from here! In fact , we go sailing tomorrow ( Wife & I) on a bigger yacht around the South Pacific ( Cruise ship) Can’t wait to see this model sail into Geelong harbour.
8:35 I think what might be the proper way to rig that is have one continuous line anchored at the end of the mast extension (towards the stern end), thread it down through the upper rear/stern side sail riveted attachment point, then along the top of the sail, through front/bow end attachment point, and then up to the block used for adjustment, in one continuous piece, allowing a more complete tensioning system.
I believe that’s incorrect. If it were just a “loop”, it would be doing nothing but providing downward pressure on the mast, but not locating it front or rear. By tension in it with two separate lines, you can change not only the downward pressure, but also the angle/bow of the mast front or, more importantly, to the rear. Expert sail shaping I don’t quite understand 🤷🏼♂️
Very keen to see what you think of this thing in the water, do you think it is a good starter sailboat for someone experienced with cars and small planes?
It is a good starter, it sails nicely and the components are good. But mine leaked a little so I added extra water proofing (silicon sealant) around all the attachment points. I also changed to a decent receiver and radio.Better yachts are a lot more expensive.
@@AndrewNewton Thanks for reply well its all rigged up and ready to maiden the TX is very suspect in operation tbh. It jitters on sail winch, so going to try bind with RMTX 16S may cure it .. fitted different RX now bound with RM TX16S yay!!
The boom appears 180 degrees out. The vang is usually on the bottom, that would make the boom even with the mainsail bottom. I'm going to mod mine to work correctly
Perfect configuration. With your permission, allow me to write down three details that could improve the configuration of this sailboat: I think you need one luff ring at the top of the sail; a little more of the jib curve (leech); and grease the rudder shaft so that it turns more smoothly. I see that you are a professional in everything
Trying to assemble this boat and already meeting so many faults. Try to push a 5 mm bolt trough a 4 mm hole! After solving that the keel as well as the rudder were not in line with the hull. I am not going to sail with that, Trying to find a solution but makes me puke.

Hi Andrew. I realise you did this review many years ago. I live in Samoa and fly RC planes. I have a few fun brushless boats electric boats I throw around a fresh water pond I have access to. Enjoyed your review and wanted to try this Compass as a beginner trial. Other reviews don't seem to be too positive and thinking whether this one is ok to start with or try the Joysway Dragon Force 65 instead. Would appreciate your thoughts, sir. Take care. Peter
Yes this is a great entry level RC Yacht. Almost identical to the Joysway it seems. Maybe with cheaper sails and components. But mine is still going well.
