Did another trip for a couple of months in Cambodia and Bangkok, and lost about 25 lbs. again. Back in Canada….put all the weight back on again. Certainly healthier for me in south east Asia. I loved Udon Thani, I found the Thais here a lot more humble and friendly than your usual tourist places such as Pattaya etc, and yes I know the reasons why 🤣

I'm just back from my first trip to Thailand spent 4 weeks there the lack of insects really surprised me didn't see a single mosquito the whole time wasted 150 quid on vaccinations and mosquito spray
Back in the day, the Charoen Hotel used to be a nice place to stay a couple times a month for years. Very good restaurant open early morning to late evening, and then the Yellowbird Lounge. Based on contemporary photos of the interior, it looks like they've maintained it well. Staff was always great. Very close to your train station (about 600 meters). Get a deluxe room or the grand suite. Live a little. Or get a cheaper economy room. Have room safes and lifts to all floors. The Banbua Grand Udon was also nice. Perhaps a few baht more.
I stayed there before Edd I think it was 500 baht per night I think you can get a room long term here Edd are you going to look for a long term accommodation Edd it’s only gone up 100 baht all those years ago 😂
It's interesting to watch this way of life, but if I was ever to retire over there I'd need a property of my own and then I'd just use that as a base to do a bit of travelling. Is property cheap in SE Asia?
I recommend top mansion hotel. Very cheap very clean lovely hotel. Its on the street with the irish clock pub. Come out of the pub turn left , pass the hanger full of bars keep going and its on the left
All the safes in hotels are a complete waste of time, hotel staff can get into any safe in any room - they will all have a code to enable them to open them, just in case a guest forgot his pass code/number. I have a zip less samsonite case which I keep all my valuables in, you would need a chainsaw to get into it, been using it for years and never had a problem 🙏😊🇬🇧
Long as you are happy Eddy don't worry what people say ? Walking around and up those hotel steps is good for you . Over time you will become much fitter lose some weight , something you could not achieve back home in England . Making all the right moves so far Eddy.

I stayed there last summer. Don't get your haircut by the ladyboy in the salon next to the hotel entrance - not great work. It is a decent place to stay that was busy on the weekends.

I take it Udon is different from Udorn? There used to be an American airbase in Udorn during the war in Vietnam. Thailand tried remaining neutral and was pretty successful. I met a guy in Japan 50 years ago who had a bar in Udorn with his Thai wife. He apparently had gone AWOL and was brought back to be - prosecuted before returning to Udorn. I often wonder what happened to him. He knew what he wanted out of life which isn’t usually the case with young men.
Udon & Udorn are the same just different spellings when translated into English. Udon or Udorn means Northern & Thani means City. So Udon Thani or Udorn Thani means Northern City. The following will take you to an article with photos of Udon/Udorn when the USA Airforce was there in the Vietnam war years. BANGKOK EYES MIDNITE HOUR UDORN IN THE 60’s 70’s

What's the night life like are there plenty of bars with nice and friendly ladies 🤔🙏 I fancy doing the same next year traveling around a bit I've been Pattaya 15 times since 2015 I've done Surin last March there's only 5 bars to be honest they were great but sadly not many young ladies working in the but plenty of Thai bars which always welcomed me.
I've just had 10 day diarrhoea and lost 5kg 👍. We take our own safe "Keep Safe" which straps to hanger rail. If the rail isn't fixed we buy some Superglue. You don't need WiFi with an unlimited phone data package. I agree about the hotel. Excellent value 👍👍.
Have to share this Eddie…all three bathrooms tiled out with non slip tiles new showers and hand rails (getting on a bit got to be careful) totally redecorated with new ceilings, Extension and small pool. £16K …the thing that astonished me is they did it all in two months. 3 teams of husband and wife. Joy cooked their lunch everyday…you know how they love their Som Tam…all in my garden last night for Korean BBQ… I was sat with the Dachshund watching Harry Brown…..you have got some nasty comments recently but they are all in your best interests

Yes, property is cheap, but the legal stuff is not always that good.

In Phuket Town I found similar hotels to 600 Baht too. Many are stairs only and no breakfast too. Some things to keep in mind
