- 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Chief Engineer explains details about the development philosophy at Japan Mobility Show with David Chao. Mr. Keita Moritsu walks over the new Land Cruiser with David and also points out the unique aspects of this particular Land Cruiser, which has all the pedal actions (brakes, accelerator) transferred onto the steering wheel. Watch this entire video to find out some insights about how the Land Cruiser was engineered.

Dear Toyota, Please send us the 70 series to North America.
Toyota please don’t send the 70 series to America as we need them in Australia. 😂🦘🇦🇺
The steering yoke at the end puts true adventurers in the seat. Well done.
Excellent news! So glad to see the Land Cruiser returning to its roots! Looking forward to your driving impressions.
I would like to see the 70 series come to the US
Thank you David for keeping us updated on the new Land Cruiser J250. My dealer will be allocating a Heritage Blue in the regular series for me early next year in Tennessee USA. Note: If you can provide some info on the design/engineering, etc. on the turbo chargers on the J250 with hybrid drive train, it would be appreciated as many are concerned about the durability and reliability of the turbo charged engines.
David thank you for your interview with the chief engineer of the Land Cruiser. There are very interesting features of this vehicle. Still very interested in the Lexus GX.
This is the current best version of Land Cruiser for me. I love the retro looks of it inside out.
Awesome video. Thanks so much for providing.
Could you please do an update video on what you know about the Baby Land-cruiser that best car web talked about 🙏🏻
Amazing interview, thanks!
Now this is very informative about current LC lineup! This video cleared some things. Thank you David!
Concise and insightful video, I did wonder about the 70 series relative to the new land cruiser. I can see the appeal of the 70 series but will be very happy when we can get the land crusier in Canada. The land cruiser will fit our use case best. On another note, it would be interesting to hear an engineering perspective on positioning the land cruiser vs. the 4 runner
Hello David, great videos, thanks!
Is it possible that you make a video talking about the 2.4 Turbo engine that´s been used instead of the V6? Please talk about the technical aspects about it. How good it is in terms of longevity.
Thanks!
That makes so much sense now, thank you for all your content. Strangely enough, I really like the basic 1958 LC version. I guess it seems like it has less things that could break and more in line with the original models. More utility, less luxury.
So excited David! I hope to buy my 250 in the next two years. I’m working as a real estate agent so I’ll keep my current car and accumulate all of the miles on that, but keep my 250 for fun. Thanks for the interview. I have enjoyed your content, especially your recent Japan Mobility Show coverage. Be well.
very infomational video. Thanks !
This is the best video on RUclips about this LC, so far! You answered a lot of the unanswered questions I see asked around online!
This was great! This video will put more about this particular LC into perspective for a lot of people that still seem confused on what this is and why it has this particular engine! I'm very happy with this particular choice, and the V6 for the GX 550, because the heavy V8 in the current GX is harder on certain steering components, during off-road use.
I'm already sold on the GX 550, but this LC sounds great, with more perspective!
Thanks!
I’m not sure the V8 is much heavier if at all over the 3.4 twin turbo V6. With both turbos and all the plumbing, I’d even wager it is a bit heavier over the outgoing 5.7.
Which model do you plan to buy? GX or Land Cruiser?
@@AutomotivePress Definitely a GX 550, as I said I'm already sold on the 550 lol. I have watched the progress of the twinturbo V6, since the 300 Series released, watched them dominate rallies like the Dakar, 2 years in a row, so I am sold on any Japanese built Toyota/Lexus body-on-frame SUV with that engine. I'll watch and see how this hybrid LC does, but i'm not comfortable buying a hybrid for trail use.
@@lunamaria1048 Yes I agree that the GX is the "better Land Cruiser". I'm planning to get the GX Overtrail... which model do you hope to buy?
@@AutomotivePress I'm definitely buying the Overtrail! I'll use it for my travels and off-road camping adventures, just like i did with the 4Runner.
Love this Land Cruiser!
😍😍😍
Invaluable information, thank you David!
Great video. Love this new Landcruiser. Would have loved the 70 series here in the US but this is still great. Wished they would have started in the 45k price range though.
For those of us in North America that aren’t familiar with the Prado, what was that LC line & it’s purpose?
The first gen prado was based on the 70 series like the KZJ78 it had the 70 series solid front axles and sitting on coils my dads kzj78 is still going after 400k on the clock
Great interview‼️ 7:21
Would be nice if the Gen6 4Runner were based on the 70 series LC.
If that were true that would be quite awesome. Since Toyota is bringing the LC J250 they could return the 4Runner back to its roots of more simplicity, alas the EPA, NHTSA and Gooberment won’t allow something like the LC 70 in he states.
Would be nice if a video was ever made directly comparing the LC250 to the 4Runner.
So you want the Gen6 4Runner to use a platform that debuted in 1984?
Hi David,
These are the videos that I am most excited about when you get to talk to chief engineers, this one, especially of the Toyota Land Cruiser is so exciting… it’s helpful knowledgeable and really gives you a custom insight. I feel that only a privileged view in the world have and that’s what you give that’s why I think your channel is going to explode into the millions someday David personally I want to thank you for how much you’ve made my life so much better with the information you provided and the way that you are provided it I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world to know you and to have the privilege to understand your complex genius but you make it look so easy and you disperse the information so elegantly that it is easy to digest for the average person in this world thank you thank you thank you 1 trillion times over…🇯🇵❤️🤍🇨🇦🙏☮️⭐️🌎
Arigato Gozaimasu Mr. Moritsu and David. 🙏🏼
David, The more often you have Mr Moritsu on the channel, the more often he can practice his English. 😉As I understand it, the Land Cruiser 250 Series and 300 Series will be offered with a large number of powertrains with widely varying prices across global markets. In other words, the cheapest 300 Series might well cost less than the most expensive 250. I have heard the legendary 2TR-FE 4 cylinder will still be sold as the LC 250's base engine in some markets. As long as I could get mine installed in a Land Cruiser with 2 tone paint, I would be quite satisfied. As I have indicated more than once in this Comments section, I am still willing to 'compromise' with a 300 Series equipped with a humble 1GR-FE V6 and full set of lockers. 🤩🤩
We keep comparing to the 300 series but I am interested to hear how the LC250 capabilities compares to the “workhorse”, the heavy duty use 70 series. I know we have never had the 70 series in the states but we also haven’t had the 300 series here in the states either.
Lx600 is a 300 which is sold in the USA
I prefer the 70 series over the 300 series (Lexus LX) any day.
Me too!
Excellent video that makes me even more excited about potentially owning one of these things one day! But: Any ideas why the announcement on prices is delayed - various Toyota websites worldwide say prices would be announced in Oct 2023, but still there are no signs of that 2 weeks later. Why? Are they revising the prices (upwards?), is production delayed? would love to hear any thoughts on that.
This is interesting and thank you but I would love to see the 70 series in Canada. Please Toyota can you make this happen?
We used to be able to buy it in Canada but it’s now only available as an ORV for mining and farming companies sadly.
In the United States there’s a tremendous demand for V6..no turbo, basic technologies(think 2015) sports model with leather interior
What survey indicated that?
The Americans need to move away from gas guzzlers and be more environmentally aware....we cannot continue to produce vehicles like 30 years ago ..
Love the previous LC’s, FJ and 4R. Time will only tell with the new LC, let’s get it and test it. Yes previous LC’s were luxury and overbuilt but the “overbuilt” part made the LC what it is.
Hello David. Do you know what will be the price for this Land Cruiser; or GX (for Canadian market). Also when should we expect this start delivering; in late 2024? Thanks
You get the best interviews David. Keep up the great work. By the way, love the respect and dignity of the Japanese culture. Hope to visit someday.
Hi David
The Land Cruiser 1st Edition, does it come in any other colour that you know of? Thanks David
Hey man..... It's ok..... Most of us here have half an idea of what we are looking at. Don't need half the video to be catch up about what this thing is. We here for the interview.
Awesome, David! I'm glad to hear from him.
Does the Land Cruiser have heads up display above the dash??
We love Keita-san!
This ones gonna sell so well immsure theyll intro more types of Land Cruisers in the Usa
Is there a non hybrid version of the lc250? 😊
Very interesting to hear about the frame and general architecture being so similar between this new 250 series and the current 300 series. And I agree about the powertrain, the 2.4T and optional hybrid should be plenty enough for anything customers would reasonably want out of this. Also cool NES setup. Would love to see a drive review of that system.
lol I want the 70!!
Very cool. Thank you Toyota. Thank you Japan.
I wish upcoming LC250 here in Australia had the Gas option but instead it’ll be only available in Diesel MH however Diesel here on average is AUD $1.5-$2/Gal > than Regular Gas and unless towing it’s needless especially for smaller Diesels!
You mean per litre.
@@Marks.Reviews Diesel here in Australia is on average AUD .40¢-.50¢/l > than Regular Gas
This makes sense. I own four Toyota 4x4's and planning to buy the 5th 4x4 very soon. Currently considering a brand new Armada, as LC 200's prices are absurd in N. America. From your expertise, would the Armada still be better than the 250 in all aspects? reliability, 4x4 capabilities? Arigatho.
Looks awesome but a 4 cylinder turbo with a battery is hard to swallow carrying that big heavy beast around-long term relilability is unknown with this engine-the car car nut just did a great video on the turbo engines everyone thinking about purchasing this new 4 cylinder turbos should watch it-its great info
still neeed to know why toyota got rid of the side opening (or dual side opening) and split tailgates.
a rear tire swing out is essential for an off-road focused vehicle especially since 35 and 37" tires don't fit underneath. need an extended/aux fuel tank there instead.
also need more information on why a 70-series isn't here as well, especially after a refresh.
What about the new Land Hopper or Land Cruiser Mini ?
I’m almost certain that Toyota did their homework before putting a new drive train in their flagship vehicle. The fact that they are using the same 2.4L Twin Turbo in ALL their best selling models (other than the Tundra). Tells me they know it will be reliable long-term. It’s either very smart, or very risky! With this in mind my ‘buying strategy’ (as David calls it - a term I love, BTW) is to try a new Land Cruiser but most likely will sell and get a new one before the power train warranty expires. I keep vehicles a long time! Still driving my 2007 4Runner purchased new! I have to be honest though, finally I’m at a position in life to afford my dream car (Land Cruiser) and it’s a 4-cylinder 😢. I’m an open minded person, and will give the new one a chance. Thanks again David for another great video!
Toyota, simply the best
Ahh so it isnt a Prado... I see!!! Thanks for this video!
250 Series and 300 Series both use basically the same TNGA-F platform, so the major difference would be powertrain (more output from the 300 Series engines). Those who tow a lot would be better off with the 300, in my personal opinion. For various markets, 300 offers 3.4 twin turbo gas V6 or 3.3 turbo diesel, 250 series offers 2.4 turbo 4-cyl gasoline or 2.8 4-cyl diesel engine depending on market. So basically a 300 Series a 6 cylinder LandCruiser whilst a 250 Series is a 4 cylinder LandCruiser. Simple!
Are we gonna get a 2 door 250 series in the US?
No news or rumours so far. Looking how Toyota/Lexus is working now, I am no expecting any 3 door Prado. Only one surviving is the 3 door version of the 70 series for GCC markets
No, only 4 doors.
🤞🤞🤞🤞
This is the best vehicle ever made in my opinion. Hopefully the mpg has gotten better
I hope 70 series come to Thailand.
I wonder if the upcoming 4-runner will have the same powertrain.
Looks so old fashioned. I've enjoyed 4 Prado’s, and loved them. This thing looks boxy and old school. I hope a new Prado is coming…..
The Australian reviewers are calling this the new Prado.
Not sold yet. Sticking with my proven USA 200 series.
Same frame. KDSS. Proven V8. Seats 8. Real leather and better materials!
Still no mention why no 300 series in USA market
I want the Land Cruiser 70 series because I don’t need all the tech. I want roll up crank windows, manual transmission, Diesel engine and simplicity.
Whoa. The LC comes with a yoke for a steering wherl
This was a concept option intended for drivers that do not have use of their legs.
So where is the land cruiser for work only?
I am waiting for the new Land Cruiser to come out causing the previou generation (2018-2021) to come down in price so I can snag one of those.
I thought the 4 Runner was supposed to be the model step down from the Land Cruiser, not a "land cruiser" below a Land Cruiser
👍👍👍
I do not think I would dare to drive from Alaska to Argentina with one of these. Not to mention around Africa. The choice for real adventure cars is getting very narrow. I crossed out the new Tacoma and Tundra too.
The CE's english is fine.
I’m so confused. The 250 series is sold with the Prado badge in other countries, so how can it be an in between vehicle? The 250 is the Prado in most other countries. Is he talking about features? How can the 250 series be light duty if it rides on the wagon chassis? How “nearly identical l” is it? Same size frame rails? Same rear axle? Same size front diff. I have so many questions….
It’s between the 70 series and 300 series.
@@CarnutMM yes, that’s what the Prado has always been. The video makes it sound like they’re saying the US spec Land Cruiser is between the Prado and 300 series. The US spec Land Cruiser literally has the Prado badge on it in other countries, hence my confusion. US spec Land Cruiser = Land Cruiser Prado, but that’s not what it sounded like in the video, unless I’m misunderstanding.
I don't doubt the land cruiser 250 is going to be a great car but I'm wondering why it has a ground clearance of a Subaru? It doesn't make sense. They should have given it the same clearance of the FJ cruiser or the 4runner.
David don't skip the conversation in Japanese please,
I don’t even understand and I agree … can use subtitles… great interview nonetheless
Thing is is when it gets to America the dealerships will mark them up another 10 15 20,000
can you kindly relay something to the toyota engineers whenever you meet them? usb c charge ports are really really slow on most cars. 5V 3A tops, or 15W. for example the new grand highlander has 7 usb c ports but all are the slow 15w.
(only exception will be the upcoming tacoma).
certainly a first word problem but its really annoying on 2024+ cars. since they're moving to charging with usb c, might as well support usb c PD "charging" protocol ;)
Did you ask him about the Land Cruiser FJ?
Looks like a Defender to me
Isnt this going to fall exactly where the 4Runner is?
It’s larger both in length and width compared to a 4Runner. Also, it’s costlier. 😊
Well color me more confused than before. So a new vehicle, that replaces the J150 Prado in other markets, and is a Landcruiser badged version of the GX is NOT a Prado, but a new, simpler Landcruiser. Like a Prado, but not. Got it.
Hopefully the one destined for our shores has all the same high-strength bits as the African versions will get.
I would have been fine, btw, with a GX 300 series with an SR tuned gas V6.
Lane Cruiser 🏆,
when you’re in middle of nowhere, it’ll take you back home 👍
I am more interested in production and that they produce enough and ship enough to the USA market as to prevent huge dealer markups and wait times if they dont then all the design and tech doesnt matter. Its wasted.
time will tell if the 2.4 turbo 4 cylinder is really "as durable" as the V8
You should say, "Nihongo daijobu desu yo" alot of us understand Nihongo.
I would not say that in Japanese in this conversation
Why Toyota is not bringing the 70 series to the US? It would kill Bronco and Jeep in one shoot
I think marketing forgot to tell this engineer that the 250 is going to be called Prado in Australia and other parts of the world.
For me hat much $$$, keeping !y 92.
Would really be nice if this towed 7000 lbs
If they only had a non turbo option I’d buy one otherwise I’ll stick to my 2022 Pro and the wife’s 2023 gx. With turbos you’re gaining torque horsepower and a bit of gas mileage in trade of long term reliability. Turbos wear out more parts on an engine more to go wrong. I bet, and I’m no engineer but if you put an 8 speed transmission into a 4Runner it would greatly improve its fuel economy. With one extra gear in the gx460 we get practically same fuel economy as in my 4Runner 6 cylinder compared to 8 cylinder.
Unless you drive a tractor trailer. Those turbo charged engines last 1 million miles easily.
Every dual range 4wd in Australia has a turbo. (Except for petrol Jeeps).🦘🇦🇺
Sorry, they lost me on this one… I was hoping for maybe a 4Runner with a solid front axel or something. But this is basically a more expensive 4Runner with the reliable engine removed… it’s sad when you have such a desirable vehicle like the 70 series and bring out something like this…
so it's basically an FJ.
Where it is the V6 ? Shameful, really
This confirms I won’t be buying it. It’s a cheaper crappy smaller 300. Instead of making it more like the 70’s they made a small grocery getter
I am inclined to agree, but would like to know more regarding the drive train engineering. Interesting, on the Toyota Land Cruiser side it would seem it is marketed as primarily an off-road vehicle, whereas the related GX 550 may be on the same frame, but is a different animal drivetrain-wise, the engine/transmission in particular, and offers SIX trim variants versus three for the LC, and understandably a much higher-appointed interior. However, Lexus has revealed a hybrid will be forthcoming, and will apparently incorporate the LC engine/transmission, i.e. the 2.4L turbo four-cylinder with an 8-speed. Of interest, if one looks close, the transfer case is of a different design between the v6 and 4-cylinder, even though the horsepower/torque are nearly the same. Yep, an old-schooler and die-hard off-roader in my day, and the transfer case design is important. Would love to see an all-gear transfer case, versus the current units utilizing chains and planetary gearsets.
Not sure I agree with that take. If it has similar bones to the 300, and the drivetrain is fairly well developed I think it’ll be a darn good offering.
@@ALMX5DP I’m glad you think so and that’s totally fine with me.
Thats ugly land cruiser they ruined it
This new design looks like that Great Wall shitbox, where’s the differential in external looks
