Regarding the cornstarch as thickener: Did this today and it was a success. Mixed 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 100 mls of water (a little less than 1/2 of a cup as 100 mls equals 0.42 cup) and microwaved for a total of 90 seconds. Mixed it in a glass pyrex measuring cup and had to stop the microwave to stir a few times in that minute and a half to keep it from bubbling over. Let it cool and thicken then stirred in 1 tablespoon of Ammonium Chloride. Used a paintbrush to brush a nice thin coat over the vinyl stencil covered wood. Let it dry thoroughly, removed the stencil and hit with the heat gun. It turned out beautifully!
@@amyschmitz2138 I think the thickness keeps it from seeping underneath your stencil! Yet, it was still able to be brushed onto the wood in a thin even layer. Try it with more water to get a thinner consistency but be aware that too thin may bleed under the stencil.
I tried with corn starch for the first time (also my first piece). Still bled under the vinyl. Used 1 ibsp ammonium chloride, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1/2 tsp corn starch. Still bled when I heated it. Consistency still seemed watery. Ordered Thick-It, just waiting on it to arrive. Measurements with the corn starch are obviously wrong, just wouldn't get thick. Any additional suggestions? I initially added warm water. It got cool so I stuck it in the microwave for 45 seconds (water was stil slightly warm) things began to pop, so I removed from microwave. And, is this reuseable at the right consistency? TIA

Hello Michael. I've just found your channel. I live in the UK and run a small pub business. I try to be as 'crafty' as possible when it comes to signage and posters for my business. It's probably the same in the USA, when it comes to getting some things printed etc, it can be costly. I've just purchased a Cricut Maker 3 - having had a Cricut Explore for quite some time. I will be looking to make some wooden cut outs and cardboard lettering for an upcoming Gin Festival we're holding from 7th - 10th July. My time is running short therefore any equipment that makes my life easier is a huge benefit to me. I wish you well and I will be exploring your other videos for tips and ideas. Cheers for now x
I wish I would have known about this hack when I was using an actual wood burning tool to make cutting boards to sell. It would have saved SOOOO much time!
There is also a version of ammonium chloride that is meant for treating urinary issues in farm animals... you can pick it up super cheap at feed stores and it does the same thing.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to buy a Cricut Explore 3 today and start making things. Love what you've shown me and that SOLD me more on getting a Cricut.
This is my first time seeing your videos and I love how you show every step of the process. It made the project instructions so clear. You will definately be my first choice go to videos for help and ideas!

Can't wait to try this out. Thanks a bunch for saving me money and having to figure out where I was going to put another machine.
I first saw this video last year and thought it was pretty cool. But this year, my husband mentioned he would like to do something like this for his sister and I knew right where to go to get the very best tutorial. You are the best!!
Absolutely loved your video! Can’t wait to do my first! I have a few questions....you talked about washing the board off, when do you do that? Do you finish off by using some type of sealant or none?
I’m interested to know this too. I’ve had a go on unfinished wood and it worked great. But now I need to finish my wood, not sure whether to do it before or after??
@@sarahellis3675 It all depends on what you're using it for. If you're making a charcuterie board, you should use a food-grade mineral oil on both sides, let it dry (preferably over night) and wipe off the excess before using. If you are making a cutting board, use food grade and unboiled Linseed oil. It'll create a food-safe and a sort of plastic-like material on the cutting board to protect it and makes it easier to maintain.
@@mrcraftypants Thank you. I'm so glad I found your videos. Your instructions are so detailed and your voice and personality are so calming, I'm ready to take on new crafting challenges. You're absolutely fantastic! 🥰
Hey! LOVE this tutorial! My question, is there a way to make re-useable stencils? Or does it pretty much need to be printed every single time? Like if I wanted to do several of those cutting boards, do I have to repeat the process each time? Just curious if there is a hack to making 5-6 of them at a time....thanks for reading!
This is my first time seeing this type of project, and I am absolutely amazed by it! You made it look so easy. Going to give it a shot, hopefully it turns out as good as yours did. Love it!
This is amazing! Can’t wait to start making Christmas gifts! Question: how do you seal the boards for use after you’ve finished burning the wood and washing the board?
wanted to say I used the thick it and ammonium chloride as in the video and have made several projects since then that have all turned out AMAZING. The really good part is that I made it in a small glass bowl, covered it and have kept it for over a week now using almost everyday over and over and it works every time. So the cost of the thick it should not concern you this stuff just keeps on giving. Again thank you Crafty for all you teach us to do. This has been a game changer.
I can't wait to get started on this. Thank you. Just a question, do you have to finish off the board with a varnish of some sort or wipe it? Thanks again
Thank you for the video. I am so glad you went over what is food safe. I don't know if anyone else said this but, as far as a stain, the easiest method I have seen is to use food coloring with water. Just wipe it on and let dry. Then use a butcher's block sealant to lock it in. Thanks again for the tutorial.
Amazing videos! I have a question: How long does it usually take this mixture to dry on your piece? My wife is in the middle of this project and we don't know how to tell if it's 'dry'.
It takes 30 minutes to dry. I realize this is a delayed response, however if you haven’t started your project yet…. I thought it would be helpful to know!
When you're done with the heat gun piece, do you have to wipe down the wood or anything to get any remaining thick-it/ammonium chloride solution off???

I’m so glad you liked it, Missy!! 😊❤️
Lola Holt
Thank you for that tip!!
I couldn’t find it anywhere, or the clerks had no clue🤪. Do you have a brand name?
Do you know what it’s called? The ammonium chloride is sold out on Amazon
The brand i get is AniMed... "Ammonium Chloride for Sheep and Goats"
Ammonium chloride is also used for fish. The pet store has it.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to buy a Cricut Explore 3 today and start making things. Love what you've shown me and that SOLD me more on getting a Cricut.
I tried this last night with cornstarch and worked beautifully!
how much of everything did you use ??
@@michellesprout4199 1 table spoon I followed the comments of what other people did
Just ordered my cricut, and THANK YOU for making this so simple to understand!
This is my first time seeing your videos and I love how you show every step of the process. It made the project instructions so clear. You will definately be my first choice go to videos for help and ideas!
I haven’t even bought a cricut yet but loved this tutorial! Fantastic idea for personalised gifts. Thank you 😊
My husband was looking at buying me a laser cutter for designs into wood. I thought, "how often would I use that" Now you've showed me how to use my Cricut to get great results without the difficult method of using a handheld wood burning tool. Really hard on my hands.
What you did is incredible. I have never seen anything like this before. Thank you!!!
I’m getting excited! My new machine should be here any day now and you are making this learning Cricut easy !
I just ordered mine today. I am glued to this channel.
I’m SO glad!! 😊 Welcome to the family! ❤️
@@tswain92_ congrats on your new machine! 😊❤️
@@mrcraftypants Thank you. I'm so glad I found your videos. Your instructions are so detailed and your voice and personality are so calming, I'm ready to take on new crafting challenges. You're absolutely fantastic! 🥰
🙌🏾🙌🏾 thank you- I have a cricut maker and don’t use it - I need to get going. Thank you for this wonderful example. I love working with wood
I just bought a Cricut joy and your videos are helping immensely. Thanks
You could get stencil material but not sure how you'd get it close enough to where it wouldn't bleed
I use mylar sheets to make re-usable stencils. They're readily available on Amazon I use spray mount to keep the m in place.
Polyurethane is food safe.
So paint a coat of PU on top?
@@laurencarroll8754 Yes. I like to use the spray. I do three coats.
@@KKayfhill how long does it take to fully dry ?
I use mineral oil for cutting boards that will actually be used for food prep and not just display.
Using the lint roll while weeding is a genius idea! Definitely going to use that!
wanted to say I used the thick it and ammonium chloride as in the video and have made several projects since then that have all turned out AMAZING. The really good part is that I made it in a small glass bowl, covered it and have kept it for over a week now using almost everyday over and over and it works every time. So the cost of the thick it should not concern you this stuff just keeps on giving. Again thank you Crafty for all you teach us to do. This has been a game changer.
So happy to hear this! 😃
I was wondering about this! Thank you for sharing. Just mixed up my first batch and so little is used!
I’m so glad you did this tutorial. I’ve never seen this done.
I can't wait to get started on this. Thank you. Just a question, do you have to finish off the board with a varnish of some sort or wipe it? Thanks again
Great job, Uncle Michael! Zane loved the Santa tray. I will have to definitely try this one day. Thank you for the awesome tutorial, as always.
Zane definitely needs one of these! 😊
Dang, wish I'd found you several failed projects ago! Love your channel. You've inspired me to get back in the game!
You make this look so easy loving all the things you can do with a cricut so excited to get started
Amazing videos! I have a question: How long does it usually take this mixture to dry on your piece? My wife is in the middle of this project and we don't know how to tell if it's 'dry'.
Nice Technic.
Worth Learning.
Thank you
how long did wait for it to dry?
It takes 30 minutes to dry. I realize this is a delayed response, however if you haven’t started your project yet…. I thought it would be helpful to know!
When you're done with the heat gun piece, do you have to wipe down the wood or anything to get any remaining thick-it/ammonium chloride solution off???
When it's all done and cooled off you should wash it with regular dish detergent and then dry it well :)
@@jessibpower im in New Zealand and trying to find the Ammonium do you know if there is different stuff? only place i can find it is at a horse place? also is it food safe or a good wash afterwards gets all reside off? Cant wait to try this
@@bogeyi you can find everything that he is using on Amazon. Cheap prices at that
Thanks for this. So many times, cricut instructors use terms like, "weld," without explaining what on earth that means to newbies like me.
So I was about to text you all the hidden words until I realized this video was from last year lol I found your channel a few months ago & watch every video.
Love it! Thanks for all your peoples hard work & tips!
Just love this so much!!! ❤️ You are so thorough when you teach!! I can’t wait to try this!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.😉
i so loved this tutorial please keep the wood craft lessons coming. however i do have one question as to why make so much solution when you only need a thin layer? im waiting on my cloride to come in the mail. I can't wait to try this technique
You can save the solution to use over and over again. Just put it in a sealable container. 😊
@@mrcraftypants how long does it last in the container? Will it have the same consistancy or do i need to add something once im ready to re use it? Thank you
@@mrcraftypants how long will it last or be good for?
I absolutely love this tutorial. Did you happen to use any kind of cutting board food grade oil over the design?
I didn’t, but I’m sure you could once it’s all said and done 😊👍
Danish oil is great for wood and food safe too. I haven’t tried it yet though so not sure if it would work best before or after?
I can’t wait to try this technique. I have a Glowforge but sometimes my wood is too thick and this will be a way for me to burn the wood.
New to the Cricut World....love watching the video's. I am learning so much about what it can do. Thank you.
I absolutely love this project! Thank you so much for showing us how to do this! I can't wait to try it! I do have one question. How long did it take for the solution to dry for you to be able to remove the vinyl from the board and begin to use your heart gun to finish it?
Not too long! I can’t remember exactly, but I don’t think it was over 30 minutes
On his other video he said 30 minutes then he removed the vinyl!
Michael, can you Please teach us how to design and create an SVG? Please! I have tried to watch other youtubers on this and thought, I need Michael!
I’m working on a course for illustrator/Inkscape, but in the mean time, have you seen my PNG to SVG video? That may help a little 😊
@@mrcraftypants I will check it out. I haven't seen it yet. Will there be a cost for the course? Not that you aren't worth it, but I don't have the funds for such. Merry Christmas! 🌲
I love inkscape. A tutorial on how to navigate that program would be great. I know the basics but I believe there's so much more to learn.
This is such a cool project!! I have had a Cricut for years...collecting dust in my office. I am so excited to try this. Thanks for your inspiration and easy-to-follow instructions. I really enjoyed watching! Stay crafty. :-)
I haven't bought a Cricut yet. I'm just watching videos to see what I could do with one. Your video was excellent. Thanks!
I used cornstarch and ammoniumchloride...I used too much cornstarch but still worked perfectly..real clean design :-) no bleeding
I love your channel! I love arts and crafts and even though I am not doing this or anything today, it was a pleasure just learning this from you! This is therapy! I really enjoy how you explain everything and I am pretty sure that this coming weekend I will be buying everything to do this kind of projects! Thank you and keep up your great job! Thumbs up!

Thank you for the tutorial, I'm pretty convinced to get my own circuit lol
Thank you for all you do and share with the world :).
Questions:
-can this emulsion/heat gun technique be used on cork trivets?
-can this technique be used with reusable stencils? Or will it ruin the stencil?
You only used a small portion of the mixture. How long would it keep in a sealed container? For another project. A few days or a week?
I’ve kept it for months. Just give it a good stir and if it’s dried out any just add a pinch of water. 😊
@@mrcraftypants a pinch of water? LOL! Love it
Do you store at room temp? And thank you so much for your fabulous tips and projects!
Best Cricut tutorial I have seen
Thank you! I love this. It’s June 30th and this can be used all year. So cool!!!
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE LEFT OVER AMMONIUM CHLORIDE WATER THICK IT MIXTURE
I was wondering the same thing, can it be saved for another project?
I’m in Australia and the thick it was super expensive, so I just used baby formula thickener, which was a 3rd of the price 🥴
Can you plz let me know what you used as I’m in au as well
Whatever works! 😊
Thanks! i was wondering what to use here in Aus! was it just the Aptimal one?
@@adorableaccessories I got Aptamil Feed Thickener from Chemist Warehouse - It was I think about $11. I found that if you mix the thickener in warm - hot water, it allows the thickener to dissolve better and then I added the ammonium chloride - I think I did 6-8 scoops (in the container) to 1 tablespoon ammonium chloride and 1/4 cup water. ☺️
