    Thanks for such a pleasant video. I purchased this camera a couple years back and bought lenses and put it on a shelf. Going to put it to good use thanks to you. The low res display turned me off but when you said the images are great, that’s all I needed.

    I have camera Olympus e-pl1 and e-p2. My favorite camera is e-p2. However I use e-pl1 with old Russian lenses Helios 44-2; Helios 44m, Helios 44m-7, Industar-50, Industar -50-2, Industar 26m; Industar 61 l/d; Mir-1b; Jupiter 8; Tair-11, Industar-69. I like to walk in the old town of Kaunas and make the photos. It is good relax after work.

    Another great video. I love your tone of voice and the gently passed delivery. I’m an Olympus lover. I have had an OM10 since my teens, and have been able to add some of those coveted OM’s to my collection recently (no OM-3Ti just yet!). I’ve got a Pen F with two period lenses too! I’m thinking of doing some video so have been looking at mirrorless. Your videos are a welcome break from the endless reading of specs and opinions (not all as valid as each other!). Here’s to the next instalment!

The epl-1 cameras are converted to infrared and are spectacular and the e-p2 I use with normal color or set to BW and often use them all with various vintage and specialized lenses with appropriate adapters for 4/3rds with excellent success. I bought a used (but in near mint condition) E-M10 MarkII early this year for £190. EVF, tilt screen, focus peaking, 5-axis IBIS, small and light, metal top and bottom plates. Terrific little camera.
    I mount all my Pentax K, M42 and M39 the on it. In many ways, it's been an upgrade on my larger (but a few years older) SLR, despite the smaller sensor size.

    The E.P.-1 is a great little creative camera. Still have it and occasionally use it, the it’s great for daylight shorts and afternoon shooting. Anything outside these parameters and you get to see how slow and difficult it is to get a good clear sharp picture 😊 Colours are just beautiful and the images have a film quality on them and yes the built quality of the camera should be used as a reference on how to build feel in a camera. I often test my vintage lenses with this. I like the same things: small,light, and takes my M4/3 lenses. Without a lens it small enough to go into larger coat pocket. My photography journey started with a second hand EPL1. Somewhere along the way I discovered that you could adapt vintage lenses, and the rest was history. Found a lovely Zenit fitted with a Helios 44, mounted it to the EPL1 and never looked back. It was with that setup that learned about how depth of field works, how to judge focal length without looking through the viewfinder first, even learned Sunny 16 on it. The EPL1 has an awesome feature of turning off all digital data in the viewfinder, and that feature allowed me to learn exposure without relying on a meter. I haven’t used any other camera that allows you to do this. I still have that camera and it’s an amazing little machine.

    I couldn't agree more that these small Olympus cameras are great. I have an E-PM1 that I've owned for years and it has taken some great photos, even with the cheap 14-42 kit lens. Recently bought a second hand E-PL7 for 100 swiss francs (around £85 today) which gives a little more control and the wifi is useful in today's world for sharing photos. Sad to think that Olympus is likely to fade away under its new ownership. They are a great company with some very overlooked kit. The only good news is that hopefully there should now be a steady supply of good quality lenses, etc. coming out into the market.

    The Panasonic G1 actually came out just before the E-P1. I bought a G1 when it came out and then an E-P1 when it came out then an E-P2 when it came out because it would take an electronic viewfinder. My E-P2 has since been converted to infrared and I still use it. The E-P1 has been on a shelf for a long time. I should take it down. A printer in the US, Ctein, sold some prints through The Online Photographer website to show just how good this new format was. He did a 16x20 print from an E-P1 with the Olympus 45/1.8 lens. But in darker conditions it works poorly in terms of af and iso. Still, I agree that it has fantastic, perhaps unbeatable (in 2022) quality to price ratio among cheapest cameras.

  • @PatrickChapmanuk
    @PatrickChapmanuk 3 года назад

    Yes, I purchased a used E-PM1 recently which I believe is the updated version of the E-P1. I will say though, the live screen is definitely showing its age now, in terms of poor brightness, colour and resolution. Doesn't effect the final pictures of course, just means you have to generally ignore or compensate for the poor live screen impression.
    If you can overcome that hurdle, then you are getting a lot under the hood of these cameras. They can certainly make a very suitable second camera for the intermediate amateur M43's photographer.

    Yes this was the first mirrorless camera in vintage style; it was even advertised in the 60's style. However, just a couple years later, Fuji stole that "vintage/retro" crown of fame with their X line, starting with the X100. Sadly after that Olympus kinda lost their way and today they are where they are...

      I did, shortly after my return home, as a replacement after having lost an E-PL1 on holiday, so I could still use the kit lens I got with the E-PL1 and the spare batteries. It was a great pity that I'd also lost the OM-fit adaptor that enabled me to fit a whole series of OM-fit lenses I got once with an OM 30 body, vintage carrying case and filters for - wait for it! - a tenner, from the annual chosen charity white elephant stall at the local Co-Op! I don't find it QUITE as user-friendly as the E-PL1, with more things done via the screen rather than via physical buttons, but it's still a nice piece of kit.

The Q is seriously underrated: most of what you like about the EP-1, but add focus peaking/zoom, great Pentax UI (which makes for a seamless transition from Pentax DSLRs), and compatibility with most 8mm film video lenses, plus their own awesome line up from Pentax. I would have no reason to buy the E-P1, as the absence of the highly praised VF-2 viewfinder option is a needless dealbreaker. I say needless because you can pick up a P2 for the same price as a P1, so why would you want to do that, unless of course you prefer shooting off the rear LCD, but not for me. P.S. - You don’t sacrifice an ounce of beauty, as the bodies are virtually identical.

    i respectfully disagree. i think when it comes to best value for money digital mirrorless system cameras, nothing in the world can beat the sony alpha 6000. you basically get everything you get in modern fully fledged cameras. just a little bit older version but in some regards quite comparable specs. plus with a cheap speedbooster, you basically get full frame performance with vintage glass or adapted canon lenses.
    i mean in most comparison kategories, an alpha 6000 is as good, if not better than a freaking canon 80D which will cost you 4 times that and is 4 years newer...i can not find this olympus camera below 150 bucks in good condition and with kit lens where i live... and the alpha 6000 which i got for 230 with lens and everything is way better. i mean the fact that sony still sells this model new after 9 years speaks for itself...
