This was the first song I ever heard from them. At the time, my father was a pastor of a tumultuous church, and while he meant well, we all suffered for it, to the point where the church didn’t help when we lost our house and were living in a Motel 6. One night a repeat of the episode of SNL Arcade Fire were on played, and they played “Intervention” first. When Win sang “working for the church while your family dies” it felt like someone out there finally understood what I was going through. Later that summer, I bought Neon Bible, and almost 15 years later, I’m still in love with this band. PS- I was lucky enough to hear them play this live, it was breathtaking.
@whiskeyclones me too! My mother was a church organist and is very “religious” more like self righteous… anyway yes I felt the same way when I heard this song years ago. My little baby sister has even lost her mind. Religion hurt my family.
@@joemoe1906 This line also hit me hard. My dad is an associate pastor at a large church and suffered so many abuses. He takes home all the anxiety and depression of the situation, and we all feel it.
I saw them on SNL too! I've been searching for years for the video but I don't think it's on RUclips, and I can't remember who the host was. I just remember The Arcade Fire was amazing. At first they seemed a little nervous, but then they all started moving in unison and it was mindblowing.
One of their most underrated, but certainly one of my top five AF songs. They only did it three times in the 14 AF shows I've been to. This is magnificent.
That guy is sooo handsome, lol.. The first song I heard of them was Laika, then my favorite Radio station played the most of their songs and they became one of my favorites bands 😍😍
First Arcade Fire song I ever heard, sat in a car park waiting for a rainstorm to pass. Serendipity. BBC radio DJs couldn't shut up about it. Never looked back.
Like a lot of people here this was the first Arcade Fire I ever heard and I was stunned by it. Epic in every way - lyrics, music, arrangement, performance. Just incredibly emotional. I must have listened to this song a dozen times over the first day after hearing it. To this day it is a benchmark of how good pop music can be.
The first time I heard this song, I was sitting in bed with headphones on, it was love at first sight, if I remember correctly, I spent about two hours repeating the song!❤
was obsessed with this album in middle school, and heard a local band do a cover of this song which lead me to one of my favorite local bands for around 7 years now
Wonderful song, easily for me a top 10 tune of-the 21st century. It’s generational appeal, at a gig at the Enmore Theatre with a work friend many years younger then me, both of us enraptured.
This whole thing, Achtung and Zooropa, Zoo TV. Will still be talked about in a thousand years, because IT WILL NEVER BE REPEATED in everything that it was..... Original, innovative, magical, inspired, utterly stunning visually and musically and they made about £3 from the whole shebang 😂
The king's taken back the throne The useless seed was sown When they say they're cutting off the phone Then tell 'em you're not home No place to hide You'll find there's a soldier on their side You're still a soldier in your mind But nothing's on the line You say it's money that we need As if we're the only mouths to feed I know that no matter what you say There are some debts we never pay Working for the church while your family dies You take what they give you And you keep it inside Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone I can taste the fear Lift me up and take me out of here Don't want to fight, don't want to die Just want to hear you cry Who's gonna throw the very first stone Oh, who's gonna re set the bone Walking with your hand in a sling Wanna hear the soldier sing Working for the church while my family dies You're little baby sister's gonna lose her mind Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone I can taste your fear It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here If the bone shot never heals I cannot make him yield You can't find me now But they're gonna get their money back somehow And when you finally disappear We'll just say you were never here Been working for the church while your life falls apart They're singing hallelujah when defeating your heart Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
As a true Bible believing Christian, who, because of my faith in Jesus, got forsaken, abandoned, and cast out of the church in my area, and even having done volunteer work for music ministry at the time for two churches, I love this song. God began to show me how alot of people are just working for religion, instead of knowing Jesus Christ, which is what Christianity was supposed to be about. Religion destroys much of the destiny's that God has planned for people. No matter how hard I gave and tried, religion just pushed me away harder and harder.
Absolutely savage!! To me it's a story about lukewarm Catholics (I know it's not what they wrote it about at all though). God said about his lukewarm children that he would spit them out of his mouth.. 😢
Whats with all this fear crap, isn't religion supposed to give people a feeling of love and peace. If you believe all these quotes you'd be scared to death.

Something very magical about the cathedral organ, how it sounds.

RIP Steven Chilton, praise to R Burnish for carrying us until the Ark

Still one of my favorites...he signs it with such emotion angry, indigent,, sad, etc..love it!
Seriously every time I see them play it’s magic.

Arcade Fire makes the most powerful music it makes me cry like a baby
When my Father passed away six years ago, this song was playing on replay in my head. This song reminds me of him.
First Arcade Fire song I ever heard, sat in a car park waiting for a rainstorm to pass. Serendipity. BBC radio DJs couldn't shut up about it. Never looked back.
This is one of my favorite arcade fire songs !!!! I remember blasting this song all the time in middle school on my pink ipod shuffle. Time flies :/

They'll say you were never here... Hopefully not!

As a transgender woman i love this song
WE, CAN REACH THE SEA!
The king's taken back the throne
The useless seed was sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
Then tell 'em you're not home
No place to hide
You'll find there's a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
But nothing's on the line
You say it's money that we need
As if we're the only mouths to feed
I know that no matter what you say
There are some debts we never pay
Working for the church while your family dies
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
I can taste the fear
Lift me up and take me out of here
Don't want to fight, don't want to die
Just want to hear you cry
Who's gonna throw the very first stone
Oh, who's gonna re set the bone
Walking with your hand in a sling
Wanna hear the soldier sing
Working for the church while my family dies
You're little baby sister's gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
If the bone shot never heals
I cannot make him yield
You can't find me now
But they're gonna get their money back somehow
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here
Been working for the church while your life falls apart
They're singing hallelujah when defeating your heart
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
❤

Welcome to The Jesus Chatline
Whats with all this fear crap, isn't religion supposed to give people a feeling of love and peace. If you believe all these quotes you'd be scared to death.
Religion IS supposed to be about love, but like any institution it’s also corruptible and the capacity for human evil is always present

This is amazing stuff ❤❤❤❤❤

So glad to see a fellow follower of the great Richard Burnish and the late Steven Chilton
