- Artist Biography by Bill Dahl - AllMusic
Although practically deaf, Johnnie Ray's tear-inflected delivery tabbed him as an early-'50s sensation. Leaving Oregon for Detroit, Ray found a gig at the Flame Club, an R&B and jazz institution. In 1951, Ray signed with Columbia's R&B subsidiary Okeh Records, although "Cry," his histrionic million-seller that year, was a pop entry all the way, with background vocals by the Four Lads. Produced by Mitch Miller, "Cry" remained perched atop the pop charts for nearly three months. Ray encored with "The Little White Cloud That Cried" before moving to the parent Columbia logo and enjoying a steady stream of pop hits, including "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" in 1952 and a cover of The Prisonaires' "Just Walking in the Rain" in 1956. Ray's frenzied antics set off riots among female admirers during his heyday, but the advent of rock soon dulled his hitmaking powers. By 1959, the hits were through.
I love this. Johnnie Ray is my great great uncle. Wish I had a chance to meet him.
True? Is so....very cool! love him
@@AJLIVENYC Yes, true. He is my great grandma's brother.
I'm planning on doing some covers of Johnnie Ray's songs as tributes to him. Just haven't figured out which ones I want to sing.
@@Swagothor How about a screenplay?
@@AJLIVENYC There's been some talk on a screenplay, but no one's done it yet. But I'll definitely look into it. Thanks for the idea!
What a memory.
Saw him at the Black Stallion in Colorado Springs on my 21st birthday in 1977. My girl friend had written a letter to him to let him know that we would be there to see his show. Oh by the way, my Mom named me after him because he was one of her favorite singers. When he came out on stage to start the show, he came down into the audience and came straight to our table and introduced himself to us then introduced me to the audience saying "This is Johnnie Ray and it's his 21st birthday'" and sang "Happy Birthday" to me. Such a wonderful person. He paid for our dinner, invited us backstage between shows and asked if we could stay for the 2nd show. I will never forget that night and when I told my Mom what happened, she started crying. She was so happy for me. We sent him an invitation to our wedding and he called me within a few days saying he wished he could come, but that he would be in Europe at the time of the wedding. Like i said, he was such a wonderful person and I am so glad that I got to meet him in person. Just wish my Mom could have been there.
That's SO COOL! Thank you so much for sharing this. 😊❤
What a story, Johnnie! Not surprised your Mom cried. Johnnie Ray was a Star with a Heart, lucky you!
Great story. I just looked this up after listening to the Song Come on Eileen.
Man, he sounds like such a humble guy.
Re Come on Eileen, i’d never considered what those lyrics were until ^ mentioned it
How’s the wife?
This was my husband's favorite song. When I hear this it makes me think so much of my husband how I miss him.
🙋🏽♀️💕
One of the authentic, brave artists that began the transition into rock and roll
Yes indeed - JOHNNIE RAY with his sometimes rough squelching voice - body movements - arm and hand gestures - hair that would often flop out of place - I say was a big influence on ELVIS PRESLEY - BUT most people do not know of JOHNNIE RAY - And I am glad to see so many videos on youtube showing of HIS talents - HE also played piano very well - I sat at a table with HIM at The Whiskey A Go Go GO night club in Hollywood , California in 1979 and we talked about HIS great career - WOW - what a night , Joe Nania a.k.a. "Hollywood" Joe
Poor old Johnny Ray, sounded sad upon the radio
But he moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried, sang along, who’d blame them?
Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
thats what brought me here ;)
I
I'm here from Dexys too
I didn't get this comment a few days ago but I came back cause now I understand it. I watched a video of Jimmy Fallon on Conan singing a bunch of songs over "Can't Touch This," including "Come on Eileen." I searched up the poor old johnny ray part that he sang, cause I recognized the song, and lo and behold, this other video I watched a few days ago after watching "There's no Business Like Show Business" (with Johnny Ray) came up as well. Then I thought, "oh shoot, maybe that comment was a lyric!" And it was.
A follower of mine sent a gift to me. This song by Johnnie Ray was the NUMBER One song one the day of my birth March 12th, 1952.. I am thrilled with this new knowledge. Sing it Ray. Thank you from my 72nd trip around the sun..
At 4 years old I had a huge crush on Johnny...my mother actually took me to see him..💙💙
😊❤
I grew up listening to Johnny Ray on the 'wireless', the years haven't tarnished my love of his voice and songs. We didn't have a television then so I never imagined that in 2022 I'd be seeing and listening to Johnny Ray on a computer in my home!!! Such emotion. Many thanks for sharing on RUclips and giving much joy.
Yes, a very sweet guy. I saw him at an outside show at the American Air Base in Athens, Greece when my dad was stationed there. He pulled me on stage, held my hand and sang to me. At the end of the song he gave me a kiss. This was in 1957.
Hello there, how are you doing dear?
He said many times that it was his hearing loss that created that sound, and if he'd had perfect hearing he might not have been nearly so successful.. He made it work, and that was amazing.
Beethoven moment
Hello there, how are you doing dear?
My dad used to sing this. It was a memory for him. I love Johnnie Ray! Thanks dad!

Hola Johnnie!
Just found myself humming this song. It was one of my Mom's favorite. She was always going around the 7 2:44 it. God, how I miss her!
My mother and I bought a 78 of Johnny Ray's cry at a rummage sale many years ago in the early seventies. We played it often and I learned it by heart and we'd sing to it on the B side is the little white cloud that cried I have that 78 to this day......
You got lucky. We paided 10.00 for the original 45 I think in 1989.
What a thing! Johnny Ray becomes straight and he's back!
The little white cloud that cried was my little brother’s favorite song when he was about three. Love Johnny Ray!!!!
Such a soulful song. "The Crown" brought me here.
My mother hated him she’d be 90 now. But growing up with the record from my dad my siblings and I love this memory
And today would be my mum and dads 57 th wedding anniversary in London . Thanks for the memories ❤️🇦🇺🌹
Your mother had good taste
You might get a kick out of this Swagothor 3000. My Dad was an Orchestra Leader so I started singing at 5 and watched Johnny Ray on his weekly show playing his piano and singing Cry. I loved him and would bring my pillow in the living room to watch. Good shows back then.. Hope you continued Music too!
This song came out a decade before I was born. However I remember frequently seeing him perform it on tv during my teens & pre-teens. He was definitely ahead of his time for blue-eyed soul.
Loved johnnie ray from the time at 14 I heard walking my baby back home they threw away the mould when he was born there's only one and your music is missed

Hello there, how are you doing dear?
Johnny Ray, he’s always cryin’.
Love 50s music, linked onto this an saw the ad at the beginning for my car 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, sheer class, best automobile ever made, gets driven here in UK all the time,
1:39 “If your heartaches seem to hang around too long.” Wow!! It’s an incredible moment. The emotion Johnny Ray pours out is simple gut wrenching.
Johnie Ray and Frankie Laine were instrumental in making the musical transition from big band to rock and roll.
I REMEMBER THIS. THIS IS A NICE SONG.
I wish I was a teenager in this era, still, the 80's were pretty good though.
Love Johnny Ray!! He was great!! ❤️
Hello there, how are you doing dear?
As a kid, Johnny Ray hung around black nightclubs to hear the great R&B singers. He was eventually befriended and mentored by the great LaVern Baker, who saw something in his style that could make this half-deaf white kid an unlikely star. And that's just what happened.
Wow! 😊
He's the best!
Hello there, how are you doing dear?
Love this- resonates in my core....Thanks still Mr.Ray. Born in 1952 I'm certain your melodies played constantly in the background of my parents' household.
Hello there, how are you doing dear?
This was one of the biggest songs of the early 1950s, along with other such classics as "Sincerely", "Mr. Sandman", "Too Young", and newer style music "Rock Around the Clock".
I never knew the name of this song. I was working a crossword puzzle and, as always, once I had the answer, I had to know more = an unexpected trip down memory lane! I've heard this song many times, ironically, never by Johnnie Ray! Love it!
I find myself being thankful again and again for RUclips!
“Fitz, Fitz got the message”
Lmao I guess we both came from there eh? I think kill the irishman is pretty good too if you like true storys on the mob altho you might say it's not as good as the Irishman. Still worth a sit down I'll say
Lindíssimo e grande cantor

Johnny Ray - Cry 0644am 20.7.23 people still bemused by this deaf guy gettin' on stage and belting out some numbers as he breaks down in tears... that kindda passion you just cant emulate...
Go on boy,, belt it out.
He stayed preformed at the Allawah Hotel in Sydney and i remember my parents raving about him..He had some medical issues --both hearing and bed wetting.
Saw him spontaneously sing this live at the piano in a club way back...very elegant man...live, his voice was spectacular
Soul...He blew me away with his opening song from "There's No Business Like Show Business"
Made a sidetrip to Hopewell Cemetery near Salem, Oregon recently and was able to snap pictures of his headstone: John Alvin Ray.1927-1990.
Quite a guy. I remember him when I was young - enjoyed him then and still do now. Quite a life, too.
He was Fabulous!!

Wow...!! ...I only knew about Johnny Ray briefly from the film There's No Business Like Show Business. I've never heard of this song before today...... amazing.
I went to see him with my family when he came to the UK .
I don't remember anthing at all about it, It must have been in 1954 when I was 8 .
He appeared at the London Palladium - I was two then but remember my Dad telling me in later years he went to see him perform there. Used to do a great impression of Ray with his wiggling jaw ...
He sang the shit outta that
I must have been 3 or 4 years old and I used to cry every time I heard this song.

Detroit ❤️ Johnnie Ray
Could he ever sing !!!!
Australia's 107th number one hit
Love you Johnny. Much respect.
The Paul Lynde (1926-1982) with the golden singing voice.
I love him.
Great singer!
He did it all before Elvis.
Johnnie Ray rock n' roll's true father
He was my cousin Gloria's favorite singer every time I was over there she would play that song cry at least 10 times I think it's because she broke up with some guy that she liked I don't know but I like destroying myself
memories
My dad's favorite
Replying to my own comment. Dad was absolutely crazy about this song. Johnnie Ray was unique. I was just a little shaver back then but now I am following Rock and Roll for the first time after playing jazz for years. This song was the BEST!!! And I don't recall anyone else singing it except there is a sax solo out there on RUclips that is sensational!
What an emotive voice!!
Seemed like a really cool guy. I love this song.
I love and respect vocal TALENT, unlike the faux singers of h-p h-p and r-p.
