My father loved his music. In the 1970s he took me to a concert of his. I’d heard his music a few times randomly, like on Happy Days, but watching him live made me really appreciate him. After that I listened to my dads 45s a lot. Eventually got a CD of his greatest hits. I’m so glad I got to see him perform in person. My dad really enjoyed the concert, but was saddened by the fact he drew only a few hundred people. I love this performance because he still sounded great and had a large adoring audience.
God Bless Johnnie, He really knew how we all felt. He sings as though he is living the Song. Today's Singer's don't come close to making us feel the Emotion he made us feel. I am 52 and just recently decided to learn more about him, thank God for RUclips. I never had the experience of seeing Johnnie in person, to those that did, You were Blessed! Sincerely, Ralph Raucci

I was a little schoolboy in short trousers when I first heard Johnnie Ray. Instantly 'hooked', I was mad on Johnnie - on my was home fron school, I often stopped at a milk-bar and played his records on their juke box. Saw him twice, live in Sydney - I'm still word-perfect with every one of his major hits! Vale, Johnnie.

Hey Mcalanb, I have no idea as to where or when this performance was made, but I thank you very much for allowing me to enjoy seeing and hearing it. At least one person suggested Ray was all dried up. Well, he was obviously pretty old at the time of this performance, and he certainly did not have quite as much punch as he did fifty years earlier, but all you have to do is listen to the appreciation of the audience. They certainly were not applauding for an old dried up singer. Just consider they had him repeat his signature song; that is most unusual and a credit to Ray. Sometime in the mid to late 1970s, I lived and worked in Northern Virginia. While in Washington, DC one evening, I went to a pub where Johnnie Ray was playing a piano while singing his large repertoire of beautiful ballads. Other than his piano, he had no other musical accompaniment - just Ray, his piano, and his voice. I sat through two sets that evening, and all the patrons were very quiet while he was performing. I remember him from the early 1950s on television and film, and he certainly was very exciting back then. I am certain he was probably more exciting in person, but I never was able to see him until that night in DC. The Johnnie Ray I saw that night was older and rather subdued while playing at the piano, but it was a great evening for me. Even though he was doing a one-man show in a DC pub, he was all class. Best wishes, Dave Wile
Hey Cinerama62, Thanks for your information. I think he looked pretty good in this 1987 performance considering he died in February of 1990. Between this 1987 performance and his death in 1990, his health and his looks deteriorated quite a bit. There are a few videos after this performance where he really looked bad. While he obviously looked a bit old for his 60 years at this time, he still was able to perform with a great deal of vigor. I enjoyed Ray from when he first hit the bigs in 1951 until his last televised performances which I think was in 1989. He was a class act. Best wishes, Dave Wile
Johnie Ray was unique among crooners, its not having a good voice but how to sing a song that made him so great. He became deaf in his right ear due to an accident aged nine yet went on stage with a primitive hearing aid receiving a commendation from the deaf society of america for showing how a disabled person can still achieve much in life. Pete 'Kiwi'Keegan
Johnnie Ray is in Billy Idol's music video "Don't Need a Gun," as a cab driver in Hollywood. Billy pays homage to him near the end where he sings "Johnnie Ray is always crying." Awesome video.
Amazing performance, Johnnie never had the greatest voice but what he did with it and his emotional delivery made him stand out. This shows he could still do it in his later years too.
