  • The Earthquake Hiller did an excellent job assisting with hilling the new potatoes. I did touch them up with an iron rake to get more dirt snug at the very top of the plant. This thing saved my back and the time it took to hill them taters.

    Looks like a pretty efficient way to hill! Sure a lot faster than doing it by hand! Thanks!! -Lea

      Thank you. I have found out the ground has to be really dry (dusty) and that's when it works best.

      I'm testing 2 spots with it. I did tighten up the top with the iron rake, with a lot less work.

      also the ground dirt needs to be really dry, like dusty when working the attachment. You know the term to wet to plow, well it's true..lol

    Do you think it would work good on a front tine tiller I have a craftsman it has the attachment bar on the back.

    • @JustMakinDoFarms
      @JustMakinDoFarms  3 года назад

      Seems like it would, as long as the soil is good and dry. Mine works better when no rain or watering for 5-7 days. The dryer the soil, the easier it hills. I prefer the rear tine tiller, I found mine used on Craigslist for $400.00

    Nice video i am curious thou i always wanted to grow my own potatoes so i have a few questions first what kind of taters are you growing whats the best ph balance for them that you found and whats is the point of hilling and what does it do also is there a way to grow taters in say a 50 gallon drum for a small area like my house i dont own the land so i cant farm like that so do you have any ideas thanks i am about to go watch your other tater video

    • @JustMakinDoFarms
      @JustMakinDoFarms  5 лет назад

      Red Pontiac potatoes, ph balance ,never tested my soil, so not sure on that. The taters grow off the plant stem,from hilling up the plant, once it is about 3/4 ft to 1ft tall is when I hill them right up to the top leaves. 50 gallon drum,I would cut it in half and plant about 3 taters in each half. Good soil to buy is Fox Farm Ocean Forest, but it cost more than others. I have seen vids on people planting taters in wire cages with straw and leaves. 5 gallon buckets also.

    Hi I see you work with potatoes. Have you ever planted purple potatoes? I dont have as many plants as you do but I only grow for me and the wife. See I have a problem with the purple ones no matter what I do they come out looking puney and small have any advice? Oh thank you for joining my channel I hope you like it I'll make more soon as my leg gets better I joined yours also brother

    • @JustMakinDoFarms
      @JustMakinDoFarms  4 года назад

      Well I have never planted them, it could be just that type of breed (small potato) or they may need more food (nutrients). I use 10-10-10 fertilizer to start and 34-0-0 but go easy on the 34-0-0 it's powerful and will burn plants if not careful and I only use it 2 times when plants are about 6 inches tall, then 2 weeks later. The rest is 10-10-10 every 2 to 3 weeks until a month before harvest.
