  • Planting potatoes with the kids. Potatoes are an easy crop to plant with young children because of their size compared to the seeds for most vegetables. The rows are prepared using a Troy-Bilt Horse Rototiller with the Troy-Bilt furrower attachment.

I have a Troy Bilt Horse and have used it for years for the garden. But now that I'm a senior citizen with some (a lot....lol) of health issues I've found using a 4x4 box with a height of 14 inches ideal for potatoes. I plant them on top of slightly loosened soil in the box and as they grow I add a combo of potting soil and peat moss. Produces a beautiful and bountiful crop. At season end I remove the soil and save it under a tarp. Reuse it the next year. The soil is always loose and very easy to work. Happy gardening!
EDIT: BTW, this method of adding soil whenever the plants are 6 inches above the soil until you have a soil depth of 14 inches practically eliminates all weeds and when soil level is at top of the box, the canopy of the potato plants keeps the soil shaded, again very much discouraging weed growth....plus retains moisture. Win - win.

It took me three plantings to figure out the correct way to mount the hilling attachment on our 1976 Horse. I simply announced that straight rows are for gardens without large rocks lurking under the soil.

Look at this site on you tube, ( Troy built and David Bradley ) it shows an attachment you could make to cover your potatoes with your tiller.

When you use your furrow make sure use your tines to help you move

Tines are always engaged for it. I don’t think it would work at all without them - they’d hold it up and drag.

That’s why you go in high range. You can’t get it straight going so slow.

I’ve used both high and low range with the hiller/furrower attachment at our prior property and found I got better control in low range and have more time to react, especially when hilling. Rocks (softball size) and ground not being broken up enough were the trouble here. This year I hit it with a plow first and pulled a bunch of rocks out and the difference was night and day.
