  • In The Witness, the player learns to teach themselves what the correct answers are. The concepts that enable this are so innately understood by the player that they're able to discover everything on their own.

I'm glad i found a video which deals with the way a person approaches these sorts of games. I feel you can learn a lot of about a person from the way they struggle and react to things and it really sets apart those with the patience and willingness to learn and those who allow expectations and nitpick criticisms to destroy their experiences.

Good video, especially your remark about the player's attitude towards personal learning and failure along the way. However I disagree with your comment about IQ tests. Only bad IQ tests try to test your existing knowledge. Those with questions involving math, vocabulary, or cultural-specific concepts are very poorly designed. Better IQ tests measure innate things like pattern recognition, observation, logic, and spatial reasoning, not unlike what The Witness teaches. An IQ test has to communicate the intentions of a question with very limited communication, that is why they are so challenging. The Witness benefits from the iteration of concepts and the dialogue between the player and the game, and it's able to achieve quite a lot with that.

I only looked at the most popular tests, which had a mixture of everything. It's good to know that others get rid of the existing knowledge sections entirely. The script originally had the point that you're making here and tied it in to the fact that The Witness is able to give you all the time you need to get yourself up to speed, but it got edited down. I left the IQ line in cos it nicely ties in with the 'intelligence test' point made later. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

My main problem with the game so far is it makes feel sick, headaches and motion sickness, less than an hour in and I feel bad.

@paula yeap, that's why I said my main problem with the game and not "the game main problem"

paula it is a problem with the game though. But not necessarily with the mechanic of the game. Many people (including myself) had the same issue of motion sickness. They added a patch for the pc that reduced it a bit.

Great video. I've been playing the game on and off for several years and finally resigned to the fact that I just don't have the time nor the gumption to persist and learn everything on my own.
There are some tutorial videos that try to highlight most of the basic concepts that aren't inherently evident while mitigating spoilers.
It's not the ideal experience but does help without leading on too much.
