Chloe was created by a blessing from an angel to be in Lucifer's path and he wanted to give her freedom of choice.
Props for thinking of someone else but he took away one of her choices by removing himself. He'll get better at it.

This is one of my favorite episodes because of Candy and how everyone reacted to her.
This was an awkward one for me to watch as well the first time through, and we obviously can't give you spoilers. All I can say is *don't stop watching!* Your reactions are great. I'm counting the amount of times you say what they're getting ready to say as they say it. I think we're up to about 5 now. 😊
I am puzzled at how you could not grasp why Lucifer did this... it is explained several times, by various players. The most succinct explanation was via a line by Amenadiel when he responded to Lucifer saying he wanted to protect Chloe from feelings he believes she has no control over... And Amenadiel says " so you held up a shield made of Candy" (to protect Chloe from falling for Lucifer against her will - which as we both agree is not true - her feelings are real, but Lucifer has no way of knowing that)
Second he wanted to mess with the Goddess, and find out her ulterior motives by making her think she has damaged him so badly, he married a dullard.....
She didn't grasp it because she is stupid!

@@philbinpar1 Well if you say so.... however the issues I mentioned are stated in the dialogue, so perhaps the writers did not intend any depth to the story.. (sarcasm if you are not that deep)

I completely understand Lucifer, cause I could easaly have done the same.
Like Charlotte, Candy becomes a character that you come to love and not going into spoilers but we do get to see her again in one of the best episodes of the season.
I do love this season and it does explain itself in this episode and the next few, can't wait to see the reaction to the rest of the season and then...season 3!

I think most of the explanation was sprinkled throughout this episode, but the gist of it is: you've probably noticed, but Lucifer really cares about freedom and freedom of choice particularly.
Like he has complicated feelings towards his father, but he especially hates thinking that God is controlling him in any way, forcing him to do things (rule hell), taking away his choice. Which is exactly why finding out Chloe is a miracle poses such a dilemma for him.
He has once again fallen (badum tsss) for one of his dad's manipulations and what's worse, he thinks Chloe has been made to feel this way, as far as he knows she's been put in his path by God, made to fall in love with him. And while he cares about her a great deal and was obviously happy when he thought it was real, he values freedom of choice above all else, so what he was doing in this episode and by disappearing, was to give Chloe her agency and her choice back.
What's more interesting is that he actually wanted to stay out of her way forever basically, but he's really fond of her and couldn't stay away, which is why he still wants that friendship, even if getting romantically involved is out of the question for him now.
Anyways, I really like that conflict in the show, because while we as the audience have more insight and can speculate/know for sure whether or not Chloe's feelings are real and not fabricated, it makes perfect sense for Lucifer as a character to have doubts and react the way he did with how much he values freedom of choice and with how he tends to see his dad's manipulations everywhere. I'm also very thankful that it's not necessarily one of these miscommunication problems, which tend to be typically used to cause drama in a romance plot.

I am not ginna talk about Lucifer trying to give chloe free will. I would like to bring your attention to the fact that Chloe has abandonment issues. Her dad and now lucifer, 2 man she cared most about. You can include Dan in it too if you want.
PS: Chloe never realised how much terrified lucifer was when she nearly died until end of episode.

He Wanted To Give Her Back Her Free Will, Her Right To Choose. If She's With Him As His Father Intended, That Proves Difficult.

I hated the "Candy Interlude" when I was first watching the show. After a couple of re-watches I've made my peace with that part of the storyline. Not my favorite tidbit of writing that they've done, but they were able to sufficiently justify it in the following shows that it annoyed me less as time went on.
All that to say, yeah, I get your annoyance. I wish they had done something less toxic to Chloe's character with that creative space, but I DO like Candy in the end and her contribution to the overall story.
