Great video man. Content like this is a huge plus on your channel tbh. You’re a pretty good rider and it’s super nice to see how people tackle different stuff. IRL you just don’t get this perspective from anyone unless it’s the one or two guys you ride with, so stuff like this actually rocks
Thanks! Yeah, I've wanted to make ''how to'' video's in the past but feel like there's already a lot of that sort of video on RUclips... I figured this would be helpful for anyone riding this particular event... there are a lot of pinch points in this race and think this could help someone!
Nice video Although I live in another country and never gonna ride this race, I really enjoy average riders making videos trying to help others. I'm sick of that 1%, top of the pyramid, showers...
Jason, where's the beloved Ripley? I saw a Santa Cruz and Pivot but no Ripley. I've never been there so I'm guessing you were more comfortable using a longer travel bike? Although the Ripley and Trail 429 could've handled it, I'm guessing it was easier and not as jarring on the longer travel bike? Anyway, like the channel, the reviews and scenery
Thanks Fred. I've done this race twice on a Ripley and last year on the Ibis Exie... I had the 5010 and Trail 429 in these videos as I was filming bike reviews on those particular bikes on those days....
I really need to make a video on them.... I absolutely love them!! Probably my favorite piece of upgrade kit ever! Best money I have ever spent on mtb related stuff. Besides of the essentials of course.... helmet, knee pads and so on... haha these wheels are my favorite non essential purchase!
@@mtbyumyum That’s great to hear! I’d be interested in your view of getting one set (either the 27 or 30) for my Trail 429 and Switchblade. I’m leaning towards the 30. Thanks for your great content!
Mine aren't the Berd brand... they're Salt Cycles brand with Berd spokes... mine are also crazy light weight including DT Swiss 180 hubs.... If anyone is interested, call Chris at Salt Cycles 801-943-8502
Great video!! Hope to see you there. I am coming down from Idaho to make my first attempt at the short version, True Grit 15 Challenge, on my Ripley you helped me build.
Great detail on that left lower line on the waterfall.. I'll probably stick to going to the right as it's less intimidating for me - and I've cleaned it multiple times, but I may give your line a try on a preride. Left would obviously be faster, but you are right, you ain't gonna win it on the DH tech.
Congrats on that last tricky climb, that was amazing to see! I've never cleaned it (tried many times) and I've never seen anyone clean it, but have heard it's possible. For those not familiar, it's much steeper/bigger in real life.
Thanks David... it's a bit of grunt. I've done it a number of times but it takes just about everything out of me haha and I've never attempted it on True Grit race day... just not worth it.
Love your channel. How many hours a week were you on the trainer to get your best time last year? I’m 53 and trying to beat my first try last year (5:26) Thanks!
Here's a link to my Strava... www.strava.com/athletes/2904628 you can go look at my workouts. I would typically shoot for 6 hours weeks on the trainer with some 8 hour weeks sprinkled in there. Lots of Zone 2 Endurance work... 60-75% of FTP. The key is consistency and motivation for me. I'd rather show up to True Grit with a lot of low-medium intensity rides in me from Dec-March than burning out on workouts that are too difficult back in Dec. or Jan. Good luck!! I would also make sure you have your nutrition figured out before the race and make sure your eating early and often... once you get behind on your calories it's difficult to pull it together out on the trail.
Thank you for this video! Great breakdown for getting down waterfall, which I have not ridden on race day, and going to St. George to session in a couple weeks! Also love the Lab Austere hip pack, my boyfriend and I use ours all the time and it worked great last year for True Grit! Ill be on my new Element, riding and racing with a couple friends, its their first TG so we are just looking to finish and have some fun along the way, too 😀
Thanks! We were screwing around with the kids that weekend so it's nice to have the flat for a lot of messing around... hiking drops and jumps. I try to get away from clipless as often as I can but in the end being clipped in is just easier.... I need to spend more time on flats.
Yeah, I enjoyed making this video. Was a little self conscious make a sort of "how to" video lol but yeah, it was fun and hopefully it will help some people!

wow, thank you!!
Hello! Please test Santa Cruz 5010 MX. Bye!
It’s on the schedule for end of May 👍 along with the Bronson and Hightower
Great video, was wondering what you thought of 2023 Transition Smuggler as it compares to the Ripley. Thanks
Do you get any kind of finisher medal or award or anything? I don’t see anything about it on their website.

wow, ss nice!! Probably a Ripley. I'm riding with some friends so not gutting myself this year...
Hi there..are you going to be able to ride the new fuel ex..?? would love to hear your thoughts..seeing that the last version wasn't all that great...
Nice riding yumyum 🤘
Thanks ✌️

Great walkthrough of the challenging portions of the course. I need to do a trip out there sometime.
Thanks Bill. It's a fun course and very challenging. You should do it next year!!
Even on GoPro you can tell this race is super Techy. Great vid as always bother.
Thank you! Yep. It’s a fun course that will test anyones skills!!
Giving away all the True Grit technical secrets haha. Nice video man and those lines are so much harder than they look on video!
100% video doesn’t do it justice. Good luck this year Mike!
Great insights and format. I think this type of video is a perfect addition to your channel if you enjoy it.

I really like this video Jason. Pretty cool insight for everyone
Thanks Brit🤙
it's amazing what the camera does to the waterfall
I know... so sad
The waterfall looks much less scary on GoPro
Haha totally. I wish I had footage of basically 70% of the riders walking it… it’s a demanding bit of trail.
This is great! I will be coming from Washington state. Will you be clipped in?
Yes. 100% riding clipless… I only ride flats occasionally. Maybe 10% of the time.
Thanks for getting back. Have you done the Whiskey 50 in Prescott?
Never heard of it. I need to get down there and ride at some point. My wife mentioned going down to sedona at some point...
Nice! Riding the Solo? :)
Probably riding a Ripley...
Looks technical! Good advice!
Thanks!
