Picked up Superman at my neighborhood Walmart today. A reunion with an old freind I had in the 1970s. This time I’m keeping him in that beautiful box. The S sheild looks so much bettter than the 70s version.
The box art for me is almost as nostalgic as the figures themselves. I remember trying to keep the boxes and my mom wasn't having it, so I went with cutting all the cool side panel artwork out of the box to keep and those even ended up getting tossed out somehow. Parents of the 70s and 80s seemed to DESPISE packaging with a passion.
My Dad was the opposite. When I received 8 of the original first 1978 12 Star Wars figures, my Dad said “ if you have any sense, you will leave them packed because they could be worth something one day” How correct he was.
I picked up all three for me, and Batman and Robin for my sons. Instantly took me back to my childhood. My grandfather bought Batman and Robin for me when I was three. I still remember those boxes. Wonderful memory. They absolutely aced these figures. Couldn’t be happier.
I don't really collect toys anymore except vicariously, but seeing these 50th anniversary figures in your video the same year I've turned 50 - well, it made me feel a little emotional. Thank you for the memories.
I tried really hard not to go down this rabbit hole, but I did get Batman and got sucked right in. RC Bats was my guy and here he is again. 5 year old Joe is happy. Solid box would have really put me over the edge. Going back to snag the other two now.
Picked up the Superman over the weekend, and, man, it brought back s ton of memories (including denting a neighbor's car because Superman didn't fly *quite as far as I'd hoped he would when I tossed him into the air.) I *really* hope someone can convince Disney/Marvel to let them reissue the Marvel characters, too. My 8 inch Superman and Spider-Man had numerous adventures with my 12 inch Hulk that adult me would genuinely love to recreate. Just not with anyone else's car.
Great review! I bought all three at Walmart. Just seeing them on the shelves again at Christmas time was a gift all it’s own. It also has a special meaning to me since I got these exact three for my birthday in the early 70’s. The B&R were the removable cowl/mask versions as well…wish I still had those! I need to compare the new ones to the FTC versions I bought a few years ago. Now if only Mego would release the KISS figures in the original packaging!
Man, what a great video! Everything about this is simply one of Mego's best "new" offering to us collectors who loved growing up in the golden age of toys! I have my set and it was pure magic being able to go into a Walmart, see the nostalgic box colors grab me from a distance, and then buy them off the shelf instead of a collectors closet or Ebay. Mego, Marty and Company, Thankyou.
Thanks for the video, Brian. I've seen these figures on Ebay, but I would like to enter a Walmart (did I say that?!) and buy them like we did in the good old days. I have almost every Robin reproduction, including the 18 inch one. He is likely the one I will buy at the store this weekend. I still have my childhood Superman, but I had to buy most of the other super heroes again as an adult. An old home movie shows that I got all of the 8 inch Batman characters for Christmas in 1974. They were all type 1 and in window boxes. I managed to get Batman, Robin, and Catwoman with the boxes again. Back then we could never find the Batcycle in any store, so my Batgirl rode around on the Big Jim motorcycle (that I still have). I have two Batcycles now. I'll probably run low on cash soon, as I have already started Christmas shopping.
Welcome home DC. Now the circle must be complete let's get back Marvel! Awesome episode Brian. And thank you for doing this video. Really put a smile on my face.
I had to buy these. It even meant me going in to a Walmart, and I HATE going in to Walmart. My first Megos were the Montgomery Ward Secret Identity Batman and Robin. So I have a little less nostalgia for the packaging because a lot of my Megos came in mailer boxes from either Wards or Sears. Still and all I grew up on the World's Greatest Superheroes and they hit all my nostalgia buttons. I've bought the new line of Megos here and there as I've liked the figures. But these are 100% must haves. And I could not possibly be happier with them. Now...I want my Marvel figures.
This was a great review. WARNING - BOX PRESERVATION TIP: I recommend opening the box from the bottom and use a tool like a small, flat file to loosen the flap. Otherwise, it might bend or tear the cardboard. Be patient and work the edges a bit. Gently slide the figure out and flip it facedown. The plastic holders can easily be snipped/cut from the backside.
I flipped when I saw these at Walmart and had to purchase Batman and Robin right away, I still need to get superman. These look great next to my vintage mego hall of Justice. 💪🤓
My first Mego Batman as a kid was the removable cowl version, I had all of the superhero figures including the villains. Also had all of the Star Trek and Planet of the Apes figures. Had a bunch of the playsets too. My mom was constantly finding some little weapon, boot, or accessory in the couch cushions or in the carpet. Funny how I remember having and playing with all that stuff, but I have no idea where it all went...
I went into my local WalMart this past weekend and found Superman and Robin on the shelf. It really does bring out a certain kind of excitement and feeling that is reminiscent of what it was like back in the day, seeing these on store shelves again. For me, that alone makes these quite worthwhile. And I really like the gold stickers, for once I actually think it adds a nice touch.
This is heaven. I feels SOOOOOOO good to see boxed Mego again, These were my childhood. I finally completely the full set and even the Flash and Green Lantern feel like later Mego releases - which they would have been. Also, the box stickers come of very easily. Any remaining adhesive comes of in seconds with a little lighter fluid. Thank you so much for the review, Brian. It could not have been done any better!
I remember being angry that old banded Aqua-man was prone to breakage if you got the bands wet . At least now a tub friendly Aquaman adventure is feasible lol
I wish the Six million dollar man would do this. I would seriously get everything from Oscar Goldman to Jaime to Fembots to Day of the Robot (Saxon) to Big Foot.
I had the original Batman and Robin when I was a kid - those mittens and boots were always scattered about the floor of my room... I think I probably sold both figures in a garage sale for a couple bucks when I was a teenager.
The reason I remember these so much is the fact they were all over the place in the 70s. You could go into a corner drug store or grocer and they'd be right there. Glad they are at least at Walmart but hope they'll also hit Walgreens.
Excellent review, and excellent experience. I've seen one in the wild, have all on the way, and got three in the mail recently of Batman. The connection is THERE. Well done, Mego (and Brick Mantooth).
You know I WASN'T GOING TO BUY THEM ... at first. Preordered the Green Lantern and some other new DC figures from Frank @ Absolutely Retro, then Flash was announced, and I preordered him, Shazam, Green Arrow, & Aquaman from ZLC. And while at Walmart on Thanksgiving Weekend, I HAD TO buy Superman, Batman, & Robin. I never liked the oven mitts, nor the stickers, and never had the removable masks, but I was bowled over at how authentic they looked. I turned 50 in May, so this has turned out to be fun.
I will definitely be getting these repros as I have a Superman and Batman MEGO, and a removable cowl Batman EMCE figure. But what would make this even better, if they could get the Marvel license. I really want a new Spiderman and Captain America to go with my MEGO ones. I know we had the Diamond Select figures, but they were expensive and more so now. Even Figure Toys couldn't touch the Marvel figures. I guess no one wants to test the house of mouse's deep pockets for lawyering up. I hope Marty Abrams hasn't given up on trying to secure the license cause how cool would that be? Keep up the great work with the vlogs.
Man I love these figures, been a fan of the original Mego designs since I got the first issue of ToyFare and getting the possibly most playable versions of them are such a fun thing to have around.
I will never understand why they don't put a 100% perfect reproduction box inside a plastic shell or even plastic wrapping and then add all the modern warnings etc via stickers on the outside of that plastic, or just use nested boxes to provide the authentic experience to collectors.
I'm really looking forward to getting these! I had Batman and Robin as a kid but not Superman. In the video I saw where they said they are going the same with Planet of the Apes and Star Trek PLUS a chance at some kind of playsets or displays.... I need a second job.
Yeah, I would've liked snaps. But oh well. I didn't buy the Action Jackson because it didn't have the Type 1 hands He did NOT look right without them. I was stoked to receive this Batman from my daughter
I have to get this I can't get them all because of my limited amount of space and this I will keep them seal I like to open my figures but this guys ill keep them seal great video review a lot nostalgia of my childhood
I saw a vintage commercial for 1972 BING BANG BOING by Ideal I was very small when it came out. It looks really cool I am sure now with safety concerns parent would have a cow if something like it came out today.
For those who wax nostalgic Aliexpress has McFarlane 1966 Batman figures, heros and villains. Around $9.99 + tax. They are the ones that were out a few years back. They must be overstock from production. Brian Great video love these trips down memory lane cherished childhood memories...
ATTENTION MEGO FANS IN THE GREATER CHICAGO AREA: The DeKalb, Illinois Valdemart had them an arm deep last night back in Electronics. Superman, Batman and Robin. Happy Holidays and remember: eBay flippers merit flipping off. 'Tis the season. Pay it forward.
I have not decided if I'm picking these up or not. My childhood Batman was also the non removable cowl. I kind of hope they make that version. And I would really prefer printed logos rather than those goofy stickers. FTC makes that version in a retro box with a printed bat logo. Hmmm.... But that's not real 50th anniversary Mego!
Very cool. Robin's mask was, for some reason, easy to find at yardsales back in the 70s. Now, I wish I'd scooped them all up, but after o e or two, as a kid I just didnt see the point, especially because they were kinda mangey quality like you said; easier to whip up one of your own with just black cloth, black stretchy cloth or in one case the leg of a doll's black tights. And I just may very well have never seen the removable Batman cowl in the wild, before. But Boy was his molded on cowled head always at yardsales and the like.
Did we ever think we’d see the day? They really did everything right. I haven’t seen these in person yet so thanks for the insightful review. Glad I don’t have to go to WalMart to get them 😂
I hope these show up in the UK, and I hope they got the Marvel licence for these... but it looks like only DC. Not being an expert, am I correct in saying only Superman, Batman & Robin, and Shazam were originally produced? Flash, Green Lantern and Green Arrow being new?
I think it's definitely made for the original owners of them with so many experiences recreated as authentic as possible. Actually one of the few times where I questioned taking them out of the box and that's not my thing at all. Fun the hear your testimony on how all the details turned out. :) I don't think saying some of the original build quality choices were poor is necessarily a slam to Mego, they have a history of making the best of what the budget and pricing allows. Truth is there are a lot more durable, plentiful, and cheaper materials now than in the past.
Love these!! I have all of them except Green Arrow so far. Some online retailers have received more than just the three shown here. I do hope that Mego releases another Batman and Robin without the removable cowl & mask as those are the versions I had as a kid.
Was thinking of getting my wife the Robin, as she's become obsessed with him, after we rewatched Batman 66, but don't know if she's going to love the oven mitt gloves and the fact that it looks like there are no eye holes in the mask.
I use to collect Megos 20 years ago. I had a Conan and Thor that were in the box and never opened. Still has the plastic band around there head. Boxes were friggin awesome condition. Wish I kept them. I was at Walmart the other day and saw these and I was blown away. But stupid me said to myself.....do I really need these. So I didn't buy them. I went home and woke up the next morning and ran back to the store only to find Robin and yes I bought him. I will be buying all of them. Do you know how many more they will make? Will they make Marvel figures? Thanks!
I want these and Hal Jordan. I wish I could get the bandless bodies to replace some I have specialy the conan because he needs a Z-type not a type 1 or 2 or the S type. just works better for him. but that's just me. These look beautiful and I love the box. My deal is space and the box helps.
Brian - I need to know where the first wave of WGSH figures sold in the boxes in Canada or did we only get the carded figures? I don't remember seeing the boxes in Canada
awwweee. i thought they messed up on Robin, but i'm remember Catwoman: she had the skin-colored clothing on her knees. I thought Robin did too, but i do have the Robin from about a decade ago and he only had on green undies, no leggings.
Found these first three last week at my local Walmart in New Hartford, NY. Movie Posters Etc. had Aquaman, Shazam, Green Lantern & Flash available online for $16.97, minus 10% off using promo code MPE10 & were delivered to me on Monday. Only lacking Green Arrow, who is still in the “Coming Soon” phase. BTW, these are all available on Amazon with release dates of 12/6-12/7.
i think i need Aquaman...definitely need Green Arrow...i'd love to see modern heroes, like Damian Wayne, and even Captain Atom and Blue Beetle from the 70s since DC bought them in the 80s for Crisis. I'd love a yellow-suit classic Captain Atom, not the Micronaut silver-body version (i have that in the 6" line...it's good enough for him).
I hope your right about them being for sale at Wal-Mart in Canada. as a Canadian I have never seen them in Wal-Mart and I'm frequently going to the toy section to see if they have anything new for Action figures, like you I collect the newer stuff, but I also have a small vintage collection. I ended up ordering a Mego's newer versions of Batman, Superman, and Robin on Amazon. Do you know if they'll do Marvel Superheroes as well?
I have finally got the series 1 of the 50 anniversary figures friend i a. Super happy can't wait to have more but i have a question if you any info about if they have any plans to make marvel characters and if there a Wonder Woman figure soon my wife is a hard-core fan of Wonder Woman and she saw my new 50 figures and she have a reissue mego Wonder Woman but she wants the classic mego box once again love the videos Mego forever
I'm a fan of these three characters but I'm just not moved to get these guys never was a fan of the oven mitts. I do have the flash and Green Lantern on order. I also feel from what I've seen in walmart that the stickers look like they'll fall off easily. Still cool to see these guys out in the wild.
I had every single one, even down to the planet of the apes!! I gotta say it would've been nice back then to have that batman take off his mask. Would've killed for that!!
Picked up Superman at my neighborhood Walmart today. A reunion with an old freind I had in the 1970s. This time I’m keeping him in that beautiful box. The S sheild looks so much bettter than the 70s version.

@@fretboardmaster70 Very, very wise man, your dad.
So true, most moms would have you through them away.
Last month found Batman and liked how close to the original it was, ended getting Robin and Superman. Mego put a lot of love into these. Well done!
I'm 54. But right now I'm 8... awesome 😁👍 thank you.
I picked up all three for me, and Batman and Robin for my sons. Instantly took me back to my childhood.
My grandfather bought Batman and Robin for me when I was three. I still remember those boxes. Wonderful memory. They absolutely aced these figures. Couldn’t be happier.
Soon as I got my hands on my MEGO figures, I was INSTANTLY 8 years old again!!!
This follow-up returns memories to me of when I not only first saw the commercials for these dolls but as well as when I had them as a kid too.
56. Some of my favorite childhood memories!
Glad you came through with all the minutiae. The artwork alone almost makes this a must buy. Right now I only barely have the space for vintage, lol.
Mego in stores is the greatest Christmas gift of all. Great video!!!
Oh wow. This is what I've been waiting for since Mego came back. They even kept Batman and Robin's oven mitts!
THIS might be a pick up for me!
Found all 3 on the way home from work tonight. Couldn't resist. Just fantastic figures.
fond MEGO memories
They just look superb... wish they would do reissues of the 12inch figures
I don't really collect toys anymore except vicariously, but seeing these 50th anniversary figures in your video the same year I've turned 50 - well, it made me feel a little emotional. Thank you for the memories.

I love these. They evoke so many childhood memories.
Saw them at my local Walmart (in small-town Iowa) last weekend. If we got 'em here, they're going to be plentiful.
I am super-excited that these are coming out right in time for Christmas!
perfect review, Brian!! Well said, evoking all the feels of our childhood!!
I want to find a couple sets of these, one for my brother who had them back in the 70s, and one for me because I wanted them in the 80s... lol
So excited! New Mego's are less pricey than the Figures Toy Company models and those of us who are broke appreciate that!
Do you think there is a possibility they could reissue the 3.25 inch pocket/ action heroes?
Yes! Yes! Yes! 🤯

You know the packages looks exactly like the ones I bought when I was a kid plan on buying everything that's available on shelf soon.
Yeah, I would've liked snaps. But oh well.
I didn't buy the Action Jackson because it didn't have the Type 1 hands
He did NOT look right without them.
I was stoked to receive this Batman from my daughter
I have Batman and Robin, love them both. Hope to get Superman next week.
I have to get this I can't get them all because of my limited amount of space and this I will keep them seal I like to open my figures but this guys ill keep them seal great video review a lot nostalgia of my childhood

yep, the molded-on cowl and mask on Batman and Robin were MY versions...i didn't even know the removeable existed back then.

Flash and Green Lantern are new. Mego made a Green Arrow figure in 1975, even gave him a car in '76!
@@BrickMantooth Ah! Interesting! I read the Ladies are due out next year...

Will they make Marvel figures? Thanks!
If Mego makes Marvel it will be a Hasbro Pulse exclusive, Hasbro controls Marvel in many ways toywise.
I want these and Hal Jordan. I wish I could get the bandless bodies to replace some I have specialy the conan because he needs a Z-type not a type 1 or 2 or the S type. just works better for him. but that's just me. These look beautiful and I love the box. My deal is space and the box helps.
What about the height are they still a bit short,,,,also are the hands any larger
Thanks for making these videos over the years.
Brian - I need to know where the first wave of WGSH figures sold in the boxes in Canada or did we only get the carded figures? I don't remember seeing the boxes in Canada
Oh we got boxed Megos in the 1970s, tons of them from Parkdale. The cards came later and mainly came from Grand.
awwweee. i thought they messed up on Robin, but i'm remember Catwoman: she had the skin-colored clothing on her knees. I thought Robin did too, but i do have the Robin from about a decade ago and he only had on green undies, no leggings.
Are they doing Marvel, too? I’d love to reclaim my old FF Megos. (Also, you sound sick. Get some chicken soup, my man!)
I had the 1974 or 1978 with the non removable cowle and the masked non removable robin and I do have interest in the 1972
Some nice re issues !
These are Bandless correct? Like zero rubber bands?
yes, correct.
@@BrickMantooth that’s all I needed to hear. Maybe sometime if we are lucky, Marvel would let them make some figures in the line.
i think i need Aquaman...definitely need Green Arrow...i'd love to see modern heroes, like Damian Wayne, and even Captain Atom and Blue Beetle from the 70s since DC bought them in the 80s for Crisis. I'd love a yellow-suit classic Captain Atom, not the Micronaut silver-body version (i have that in the 6" line...it's good enough for him).
I have that batman book🤣🤣🤣
I hope your right about them being for sale at Wal-Mart in Canada. as a Canadian I have never seen them in Wal-Mart and I'm frequently going to the toy section to see if they have anything new for Action figures, like you I collect the newer stuff, but I also have a small vintage collection. I ended up ordering a Mego's newer versions of Batman, Superman, and Robin on Amazon. Do you know if they'll do Marvel Superheroes as well?
I know at least Toys R Us will have them right now. Fingers crossed that Canada gets wider distribution.
Hopefully they will redo the Marvel ones too as Iron Man was my original intro to Mego in the early 70s
I had every single one, even down to the planet of the apes!! I gotta say it would've been nice back then to have that batman take off his mask. Would've killed for that!!
I don’t like how large and location of the 50th anniversary sticker. Other than that the boxes are close enough.
I wish I coukd find them
