ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt resonated with me as I just bought some eggs, only really wanted a 6 pack but it was only about 40 cents more expensive for 12.
Hi Ronny. Heading out on a four day California back country trip in a few days and have been binge watching your channel and must say your tips are going to be an invaluable part of my journey. Thank you for the amazing content.
I didn't think a video about camping food could possibly be as funny as this! Also, I've used the zip-loc bag method for breakfast potatoes, just put chopped potatoes and onions, seasoning, olive oil and a chunk of butter in a bag for easy cooking. I used it the same day some didn't notice the onion polluting my cooler.
I know it's old but still valid point here. My 3p Ronny - good idea leant on some trips I've done - speak to your mates what they are having on a day. Sometimes a can of something may be too much for one's taste so you can share your canned peas and get some chopped tomatoes of someone instead ;)
Eggs eggs in the bottle we've been doing for years on the Appalachian Trail, we also take small Gatorade bottles with water froze in them used for ice packs in small soft sided coolers to keep our eggs, bacon, sausage, hot dogs whatever cool. When the the Gatorade bottles thaw out we got water to drink.
So many great ideas Ronny, some common sense, other things you wouldn't think of until it's too late,im new to the 4wd over landing lifestyle and your videos give me the confidence of getting it right (hopefully)the first time, thanks again Ronny for making yet another informative video 👍
I have the same problem with onions in plastic but my girlfriend said try adding some lemon to the bag, it helps take the smell away. Never thought about the bottle for the scrambled egg, or pancake mix so awesome, learnt something new today thanks mate
Good stuff Ronny, those people with intolerance's or allergies to certain foods can still follow the principles you discussed, they just have to adapt to suit.
Thanks for the tips. I took the plunge years ago and purchased a dehydrator. Make your favorite meals, dehydrate them then vacuum pack them. Last for a long long time and when ready to cook, add boiling water and you're eating. I try to avoid preservatives (but certainly understand their benefit for travel) and find I don't need to worry about it with dehydrated meals from my own kitchen. Over the course of time I'm sure it is money well saved to cover the cost of the dehydrator. Best to you.
top shelf of the fridge is a dairy shelf, because it is on top of the compressor you normally see it a couple of degrees warmer than the rest of the fridge which means the butter will be a bit softer and you're not as likely to get icy milk. Love your videos man, in the middle of a massive watching spree as i get ready to get into 4wd-ing
I find a really good way to store bread , fruit and veggies etc. anything that your worried about getting damaged in a couple steel food storage containers you can buy from any Kmart or Big W.. they only cost 10-20 bucks for a pack of 5 which are different sizes for bread, eggs, anything you want really and they last forever. and they seal great so you can keep all the dust out. and they also stack on top of each nicely to fit in your fridge freezer.
Here are a couple of tips that work well with Ice chests. I prepare a meat dish with a marinade and freeze it solid at home. I put a bag of frozen vegetables in the ice chest as well. Both of these thaw out in the ice chest. The first night at camp all I need to do is cook, no time wasted on preparation and clean up is minimized. Instead of buying bags of ice, I freeze water bottles, (with an reasonable air gap). These tricks help minimize the amount of standing water in the ice chest and increases storage capacity.
Ronny, just to let you know that this is such a fantastic channel, and I've learnt so much since finding it. This video is brilliant, they just seem to be getting even better. Keep up the great work. Cheers
Thanks Ronny. We have been planning our solo 4WD trip East of Esperance for some time now. Your video's (Epic adventure off road Esperance Pt 1 & 2) have been a great influence and help to us. Especially the last two about food etc. Everyone has different ideas but you seem to make it all look a little easier. Definately going the egg in the bottle, super tip!!! We are trialing a new fridge freezer combo and a few other things like the snow peak fire pit also. Would love a drone but that will have to wait. 4 days till we hit the road..... cheers for the inspiration and adventure. Aj & Louise WA.
great thing about vaccing meat is that you can also throw any marinades in the bag before you vac it, you dont get a much air out as you have to monitor the vaccing process and stop it before the any liquid gets sucked out and ruins the sealing process, but its very effective as the marinade is pressed up against the meat all over
I just did The Holland Track and stored the 12 pack of eggs in the cardboard carton they came in, but sitting on top of the bread for a bit of 'suspension'. None broke.
Mate I love this video. Love the beard work, love the cat and love the egg drop, who needs mic drop when Ronnies is dropping eggs. Thanks for all the tips mate learnt so much
I never thought of pre making pancakes and eggs in a bottle. Biggest problem camping is dirtying more dishes in prep. Genius just poring into a pan and done
My two cents worth ... Cross regerence your trip plan with your food plan. Some days are going to be full of driving, when you'll want a quick meal. Other days, you'll have more time to get your Fire to Fork on with camp oven roasts and the like. Tying this video to the getting your spouse to camp video, talk to your better half about what food you intend to take. Your better half will be more inclined to help with the cooking, if they've had buy-in to the menu, asnd they often have good ideas. If you don't know how to cook, use this hack. During the week before a trip, get the cook in your house (or even your mum) to cook extra and cryovac/freeze the rest for your trip. This is great for saucy meats, like Bolognese sauce, chilli con carne and all sorts of curries. Extend this to your favourite local takeaway - thai, indian, etc - and order an extra few dishes that you can cryovac/freeze. Just boil the pasta, rice or whatever, and you can either pour the cryovac contents into a pot to reheat or heat up the entire plastic packaging with food inside in a pot of boiling water (check that the plastic is safe to do this). Use the boiling water for washing up. Hell, you can even get some saucy meats all cryovaced and ready to heat up at supermarkets - lamb shanks from ALDI are my favourite! Cryovac enough for others in the group and leave the hardcore cooking for the foodies - just be sure to praise the Mrs in front of everyone for that awesome homemade massaman curry that you whipped up in 10 minutes.
To avoid cooking disasters, I'll add that you should try and test any recipes at home, using your overland cooking kit. You'll soon realise that maybe the recipe needs modifying, or the pot you were going to take isn't big enough, or that everything sticks to that new frying pan, or you're not as good at whipping up a rissotto as you thought.
On the bread.... If you can buy orowheat breads in AU, it lasts for weeks without stale or mold. I swear to God, it's not natural. Hahaha. Tastes great too!
mate, thanks for the 2-parts video. plenty of good and easy to do tips, glad i already own a cryovac machine. hope you do a duet with andrew st. pierre white after he's moved to australia ..
Awesome details man .... i wish i was on that side of earth to give you a few cooking tips ! Hiw to cook rice ! bread ? Make your own, it s easy and fast ! Wraps even easier ... .. and something we could talk about cans ! But if bread last longer, means has shitier stuff in it, so i would prefer not eat it ... and nothing better than fresh bread ...
one thing we do with eggs is put all our omelet ingredients into a Ziploc freezer bag. Toss the bag into a pot of boiling water for 15 minutes or so and voila...easy no mess breakfast
Excellent video as always! How do you store drinks? They go in the fridge obviously, but do you prefer a type of container? Cans, bottles? Also, I'm assuming that you buy more drinks that what will fit in the fridge and just add hot drinks as you drink cold ones? I bet there's a fine line between how many drinks in the fridge at one time and how much room you have for other foods? Thanks again for all the hard work in producing and sharing these excellent videos!!
Ronny Mate did I miss the video explaining your canopy disappearing. (don't think its possible for me to miss a video). Was there any particular reason for it or just something new?
+Ronny Dahl (4 Wheeling in W.A.)... Oh well, it still looks awesome and I bet is a bit lighter too... Keep up the great work... Love the channel and the videos...
Nice video Ronny. I'm wondering, don't any of your group hunt and trap for your food? I'm sure there must be small to medium game about (Rabbit, Squirrel, Opossum, Raccoon) Nothing is better then eating fresh meat that was walking about a few hours before you eat it!!!
John Eckert haha, most of those we don't have in Australia, Rabbit yes millions but depends on location, possums are protected, can shoot kangaroos and pigs that's about it. Guns are far more restricted here, need a hunting licence for on farm purposes mostly or being part of a rifle club. With the exception of farmers and professional hunters the vast majority of people in Australia don't possess guns as we have no need of them.
I use bow and arrow or I use a old fashion Black Powder muzzle-loader. I get 1, and only 1 shot. Then reload Here's why- I have to pour a premeasured amount of powder down the muzzle. Take out a "patch" and round ball, ram the "patch" and round ball down the muzzle with a ramrod, put power in the flash pan if I am using my flint lock or install a percussion cap, aim and fire. then repeat for the next shot. On a good day I might get 2 shots off in a minute. With bow and arrow I can get 4 to 6 arrow off in a minute IF I want any type of accuracy.
That's understandable. For me it's about drinking coffee and teaching kids (14 to 18) about self reliance and wilderness skills. Would you happen to know what camera tripod Ronny showed in the 100,000 subscriber video? One leg on my tripod took a shit, dumping my camera into a sharp rock. THANKS
i can't agree on freezing your bread. first of all you freeze a lot of air. if you want bread that will last longer. look for full grain pumpernickel or something similar. or use crispbread. anything with a low water and aircontent will last you longer. also, if you go on a long trip think about the possibility to bake bread. you can do it in a pot or as flatbread in a pan or on a hot stone. i recommend the Dutchofen bread in this case. bringing the ingredients will be as complicated as the finished product. but you need the time to prepare it of course.
I know this is a late comment ready mixed eggs for scramble only last 2 days because of the reaction of the contents Also know fact had 3 t0n of long life milk left in desert for 3 months in the sun only thing that went mouldy was outside cintainer
How come you dont mention freeze dried food there is even a 30 day freeze dried survival pack in a 20l bucket all food a person needs for a month just add a little water
Ronny Dahl - You're not living up to your full thinking potential. If you can vacuum pack meat you can also vacuum pack vegetables. . They won't last as long as meat, but they will last longer and they will weigh a lot less and take a less space than cans. You can also dehydrate fruit and meats.
Malcolm Douglas just caught his food fresh everyday
That egg pro tip......MIND BLOWN.
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt resonated with me as I just bought some eggs, only really wanted a 6 pack but it was only about 40 cents more expensive for 12.
Scrambled eggs in the bottle is a great idea, I'll be using that one.
How long you reckon it would last like that?
@@pete3103 not very long
9 months for a reply 😂
Ronny we need a update are you still carrying around scrambled eggs in a bottle.
the scrambled egg part - BOOM!
Hi Ronny. Heading out on a four day California back country trip in a few days and have been binge watching your channel and must say your tips are going to be an invaluable part of my journey. Thank you for the amazing content.

Thanks for the info. Here I was thinking people are well on trips but it's basically the foods I already eat.
Eggs eggs in the bottle we've been doing for years on the Appalachian Trail, we also take small Gatorade bottles with water froze in them used for ice packs in small soft sided coolers to keep our eggs, bacon, sausage, hot dogs whatever cool. Eggs in a bottle mate...... legend. The rest is covered from trial and error but that was magic. Cheers Moose in North Vic.
3:55 had to smile when I saw the eggs, damn Ronny you are awesome!

the wife and I really liked the eggs in a bottle idea!!!
I love the instant scrambled eggs idea. Good video mate!
Dried foods like mushrooms work well. Reconstituted with a little water and ready in minutes.

With the Tomato’s cut at home and place a couple of slices in the plastic sealed bags . Also lettuce is kept fresh this way as well .
Some good tips there cobba, do a similar thing when back pack hunting in victoria
Love the eggs tip. Hello from Delwa”where”
I use bread as an insulator on top of
food in ICE chest .... just double bag/wrap
You can displace all the air in a snap lock by submerging in water, makes it easier to remove the air, but not as good as vacuum sealing of course.
Thanks Ronny!!
Awesome tips :) definitely going to use some of them in our next outing, cheers.
egg tip! genius
i can highly recommend Pumpernickel
I never thought of pre making pancakes and eggs in a bottle. Biggest problem camping is dirtying more dishes in prep. Genius just poring into a pan and done
thumbs up for Olaf on the fridge! LOL
egg tip of the year TOTALLY ROCKS IT !!!

Freeze the wraps as well. They ship that way to the shopping center as I understand it.
Couscous with your stews etc. only needs a little boiling water.

We use bagels, they don't get smashed in a pack or box and they are a high density food.
On the bread.... If you can buy orowheat breads in AU, it lasts for weeks without stale or mold. I swear to God, it's not natural. Hahaha. Tastes great too!

Powdered milk. It keeps forever. Just add water and make what you need when you need it.
should mention another reason for not chopping onion is they soak up alot of bacteria.

White bread is useless
