- in this episode i delve into loyalty and, more specifically, what an issue i think it presents in certain relationships. the key relationship that comes to mind for me is the one with my “dad”. to understand why i put “dad” in quotes, you’re gonna have to listen to the episode. mormon punch recipe: 1 part sprite, 1 part rainbow sherbet, 1 dollop of whipped cream, ice to taste.
oh I hate the whole "you only have one whatever" idea. as if that meant anything. we should all be allowed to decide who we want in our lives!
Well this sure as fuck hit me square in the EMOTIONS. I felt called in & seen around 13:30 minute mark when you mention how heartbreaking it is to pour effort (emotional etc) into someone who refuses to acknowledge your love nor provide you with any proof of love. The choosing to remain in a relationship to “assuage his own guilt” [for past mistakes] is a whole sermon, Jennette. I’ve been on both sides of this scenario and it’s the worst. It’s cowardly behavior rooted in shame. I am still in the process of deconstructing how I date and view relationships so that I do not carry irresponsible, shitty, and unkind patterns forward. I’m subscribed and diving into your episodes.
Hi Jennette. I first discovered you when your book first came out. Somehow I learned that you'd done DBT. I was diagnosed with Borderline and also did DBT to help me with panic attacks and severe depression. Knowing that you conquered your issues with DBT really helped me continue the program. I don't want to go through my whole story here but I was a law student when I first went inpatient. So much of my life, kind of like yours, was in pursuit of becoming a lawyer to make my mom and deceased dad proud of me. I can relate to a lot of the stress you felt, though at least I wanted to be a lawyer, you didn't even want to be an actress. Anyway, partly thanks to you, I am a lawyer now. So I wanted you to know that you had that impact on my life and thank you so much for sharing your healing journey. I know now that there's such a thing as a life worth living!

I went no contact with my mom and a couple months later my dad. The thing that hurt the most is that I didn't miss them. Because there was nothing to miss! They were taking from me and giving nothing but issues and stress. So many people send guilt coded messages to me but I DONT CARE. Why would I put energy into a relationship with people that failed me as a child and fail me as an adult.
I appreciate this podcast as we share a lot in common. Especially with family and abuse. ❤
I am no contact with my dad for 5 years. He is emotionally unavailable due to long term heavy drug use. He had sexual activity with my high school gf while I was in the relationship. My older sister also lives with him and is in the same drug habits. She has a child that is about 4 now that I have not met. 13:04
I was raised Mormon as well. I’m so glad that I left that cult.
