    The British Conservative Party needs to abandon the idea that public ownership is always bad. The water, electricity, and transport systems need removing from private ownership and put in some form of public ownership. As it is other countries are just extracting money from the country.

    • @Benzknees
      @Benzknees 3 дня назад +2

      Public sector Network Rail employ twice as many people, with four times the budget, and just as many network delays, as did private Railtrack. And they have all the highest paid civil servants in the country, the top one earning 4.5x as much as the PM.
      Whilst no monopoly, public or private is good, at least the private sector is accountable to its shareholders, encouraging it to somewhat efficient. By contrast public monopolies, without any such motive, have an incentive to spend right upto their annual budgets, so the politicians have no reason to cut it thanks to efficiencies.

    • @StrayGator
      @StrayGator 3 дня назад +3

      @Benzknees Not disagreeing entirely, but firstly, the government was subsidising the franchises massively before COVID, assuring private sector profits. The different franchises makes switching train companies on a journey a fraught nightmare.
      Also, not all public ownership models have to be the same as the Herbert Morrison model of the immediate post war period.
      If it was in true public ownership rather than being owned by the state for example, the company could be directly accountable to the service users.

    • @Benzknees
      @Benzknees 3 дня назад

      @@StrayGator - Interesting idea, but how would that work in practice? How is the individual train user to hold a train operator to account? And how do you measure such without the usual price mechanism, that makes all private enterprise have to compete, institute efficiencies, and allocate resources to match supply with demand? And that makes all public sector enterprises inherently inefficient, bureaucratic and unable to match supply with demand. The NHS being the most obvious example, where a doubling of its real terms budget in the last 30yrs has ended up with a worse service.

    • @StrayGator
      @StrayGator 3 дня назад

      @Benzknees Who knows how it will work but this is part of the process that is bereft in Whitrhall. Creative thinking!
      What I do know almost for certain is if Network Rail had been privatised, the last decade has shown that it would most likely become heavily indebted to pay dividends and the infrastructure would be in an even worse state than it is now. The water sector is in a perilous state and each day longer the situation remains as it is the more expensive it will be when judgement day comes!

      @ - If private companies decide to take on debt, how does that affect you personally? It's the regulator who dictates pricing levels to private monopolies, not any internal financial engineering.
      And whilst I am aware there is a water company around London that comes in for such criticism, this is not necessarily representative of all. My own water provider has been just fine. In facf my bills are considerably lower (in real terms) than when it was a public company. Helped admittedly by the move to metering. Which itself a proxy of sorts for a proper price mechanism, discouraging waste on my part & encouraging efficiency on their part.

    Cummings talk is so informative. I am not a Tory, but I also get frustrated at the lack of action and cooperation in the Uk, when it is required.
    Lawyers seem to be controlling and slowing down actions that need to be implemented quickly to save lives, and save resources long term. Lawyers are surplus to requirement.These people are obviously employed by big Corporations, to serve their finnancial interests.
    It's time for our government to begin running this country. Change laws when required, and get back to taking big decisions that impact us the electorate.

    His thoughts on British elite talent no longer seeking government roles are insightful. The concept of ‘service’ (with possible roots in both Christian and Renaissance philosophy), began to fade from public discourse during the 1980s when the elite began seeking employment in more personally profitable areas such as investment banking and management consultancy. By this time, British society had fundamentally changed. The turnaround will only happen when there is a “renaissance” in education and societal values.

Please DC if you have plans to launch something new, please don’t wait, this country won’t survive a vote split between Reform and the Tories handing Labour yet another term. The country is crying out for something new, that would destroy the current shower, and you’re the only person that could create anything remotely resembling the current shift America has just seen.

    Ministers - including the PM - , MPs and civil servants from day one were so deeply suspicious of Dominic Cummings, that they did not allow him to get on with the job he wanted to do. I guess the question is, if that is the result of a structural problem or somehow related to Mr. Cummings' peculiar operating style. Perhaps a bit of both?
