  • Blackstar ID Core 10 v3 (BEST Sounding Entry Level Amp In The World?)
Is it the best sounding entry level amp out there? That's what Blackstar claim. This is the new and updated version of the ID Core series. It's a very affordable guitar amp and comes with the familiar modes from V2 of the range, but with some added features. We'll discuss those features, but above all check out how this amp sounds.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Sounds: 4:35

I went into my local shop thinking I was going to buy a Fender Champion 20 for my student amp (I teach some guitar and am stepping up my facilities).
I walked out with the ID Core 10 instead. It’s versatile, sounds good, and fun to play.
I knew I’d need to go in and do some editing, as the presets are too warm and bassy. The editing software got me where I wanted so now I can just plug and and rock without having to tweak any more. It’s still a bit boomy, but for a $150 practice amp for my students, it’s absolutely brilliant.

You need to sit dead in front of it.
The auto wah, the spring reverb, three of the delays, the super crunch, warm clean, and OD1 sounds are great.
I have gotten on with it real well.
I always have the isf all the way anticlockwise, the other way its just mud.
I played every little practice amp which had modelling.
It beat them all! I generally don't like blackstar, not really.
But I liked this the most!!!!
Maybe I just have poor taste and judgement after 30 years of session and live playing; I guess the playing on my channel should speak for me.
    But
    Vive le diference!!!
I kind of love that we disagree; I adore your playing, your tobe, your channel!!!🍀
But I massively disagree on this one!🍀

I just spent a lot of time researching desktop amps. Was looking at Yamaha, NUX, Boss and Spark. Blackstar wasn't even on my radar. There are many good ones and I'm not saying this is the best one, but for what it is, I was actually pleasantly surprised. I'm confused about how anyone would not like this little practice amp. I have a Friedman BE50 Deluxe amp, which is miles away from this amp in sound and quality, but I think for $160 it's hard to beat. Keep in mind it's only a desktop practice amp. I did own a Blackstar Club 40 MKII years ago and I thought it was ok, but ultimately sold it and put the money toward my Friedman. It wasn't bad, but just didn't inspire me. Actually I think this little amp sounds better than the Club 40 I had. All that aside, the delays are good and reverbs aren't too bad either. To me, it almost sounds like you might have had some preconceived notion that impacted your opinion, but perhaps you simply hear differently than I do. Subjective was the right word because with all due respect, I have to disagree with your assessment of this little amp. It's perfect for a tabletop practice amp and the price is on point. I ended up buying it and find it very useful and am happy with my purchase. It cost me less than most of my pedals though lol.

have you compared it to any of the other desktop amps you mentioned? the blackstar doesnt get talked about at all and i would have taken a chance on it had i known about it. i ended up finding a used yamaha thr10x for 150 bucks on facebook marketplace and im really happy with it but i am interested in the superwide stereo that the bnlackstar has, and for the price i might order one anyway.

Oof. I have a V2 and it’s my end table amp. I love it (for what it is). I’ve recommended the V2 to several people looking for beginner or practice amps. Don’t know if they’ve changed the voices, but I feel like this sounded way more fuzzy and compressed... I also have a Fly 3 and the V2 sounds very similar. Anyways, thanks for the honest review as always and fantastic playing - I could listen to those clean riffs and chords with the reverb and delay all day. 👍

I never buy anything until I hear some decent demos or recordings and I’ve heard a few so I decided for the price, I’d get it. Not disappointed one bit. Day one you’ll get some decent sounds, and really notice the cabinet sounds & feel. The overdrive feels and sounds a lot like a good Maxon not the usual plastic sounds. I guess the downside is that not every guitar is gonna sound the same, but my Silvertone Fastback sounds so close to the Van Halen sounds I like, better than any other modeler or solid state, hybrid tube combo, and the fx are good, especially once you get everything just right. I liked things more around 10 or eleven o’clock on the ISF, turn the guitar volume down and leave the gain up at 5:30 and just use your guitar volume instead of expecting the amp to transform into the axe fx or something lol I seriously think the price and history of the ID Core amps just cause people to disrespect them and not even try them out properly.

The critics of these amps keep forgetting that this is a practice amp. That's how Blackstar advertises it. I have the V1 stereo 20 and it's far better than any amps I started out with 30 years ago. Perspective is everything.
I have a Marshall tube amp for my main but it's too loud at night or quiet situations. The ID Core is perfect for those times and even when you want you crank it up. I'm impressed how it sounds much bigger than it is. For the price, it's a good deal.
    Great job. 👍🏻

Exactly! Now I have heard that the voice knobs stop working on these things. There's one for sale on reverb for 25 bucks. Seen a lot of them with the same problem. However, even the "Honest" reviews aren't very good either. Seems like they always say " For a few more bucks I'd recommend this amp or that amp." Some people don't have the money! Every single one of them end up recommending the same crap. They won't even look at lesser known brands that make decent amps. Amps that would be great for beginners on a budget. I've seen people review the Blackstar Fly and say wow, it's great! Then turn around and say they didn't like the Blackstar Debut 10e. I call B.S. on that! It's the same damn thing with an extra speaker! I've tried so hard to make a good decision about an amp, and I'm about over it. Even when they aren't paid, they seem to be biased based opinions and never an honest opinion. When I look for reviews, there are little to none unless it's expensive, and that tells me all I need to know. I like Elmo, don't get me wrong, and I think he's honest about his opinion, but I don't think it's without bias. The review will say "best affordable amps" then the amp at the top will cost four times as much as the one on bottom. Elmo included. Does it all the time. If it's not the same price, it shouldn't be compared. At all. It makes people think there's something wrong with the one on the bottom and that's not even true when the price is considered. So, I'm going to buy what I think sounds good. For the money I have. Someday when I can play decent I might start doing my own reviews. As a beginner, I don't need all the crap on the amp being reviewed and they break down all the time. So I'm sticking with a Blackstar Debut 10e. It's simple to use and for the money, I personally like the sound. It doesn't need to be loud, it needs to sound good at low volume. I'm playing at home! Sorry I'm on a rant, the whole amp thing just irks me off. I'm over it. I swear people make anything to do with music a thousand times more complicated than it needs to be. From learning to play, to the equipment. Sweetwater here I come!

The “wide stereo” is much more useful when using the amp for recording via line out directly to an interface. I’ve made a couple of videos using that method and the effects and stereo width is very good-sounding. If there are any other stereo amps in other brands, I’d be interested in checking them out but if Blackstar is the only stereo guitar amp, then I’m very happy with it.

I have been playing the ID Core 40 V1 for about 5 years. The stereo sound has spoiled me. Mono amps now sound dull and lifeless to me. I like the clean and crunch tones on the id core amps but not the overdrive tones. I think my joyo ultimate drive pedal sounds much better. Some of the online patches for download are pretty good but allot of them sound very similar. I like the built in usb audio interface and it work great just for listening to music because it has full range stereo. Lately I have been thinking about trying out the Positive Grid Spark because there seems to be more variety of patches. For the price it has been a very good amp for practice / bedroom.

    • @theblytonian3906

That's been my experience with the ID:Core too Nick, although having looked into them with all the unavoidable hype since their release, I'm not interested in a Spark Grid for my purposes. My ID:Core (V1) will have been in service with me for five years this October. Have lots of amp choice here in my humble home studio, but the ID:Core 40 (V1) gets used more frequently because of its convenience. The combination of its smaller collapsable (floor decoupling) foldback stand size and weight, its weight both lending to quick and easy portability a 2x12 combo whether solid state or valve just doesn't offer, combined with its comprehensive feature set offering versatile functionality, fidelity, plus its immersive SWS sound and perfect for practice purposes without loss of presence volume.
Although bought more recently I also have its proprietary Blackstar FS-11 smart footswitch which although pitched at a 'will I or won't I' typical accessory price point, does add significant value to the amp for those who will use its functionality. I'd recommend it to anyone who owns this amp who knows how to use its features, uses them in actual practice and intends to keep the amp long term used regularly deployed as a home practice or jamming with others at moderate volumes amp.
Along with my Fly 3s, my ID:Core still gets more regular use than I thought it would when I bought my larger, louder amps when their grunt just isn't necessary nor any more welcome than their weight. I like my ID Core so much, I actually pressed the buy button on another new 40W (V3) only yesterday when the opportunity arose at a 'too good not to' price. IDK if the current super SALE price opportunity is down to the world economic conditions impacting consumer sentiment and spending or there's a V4 or complete alternative new superseding model offering in the wind, and frankly don't care. Deal. It worked for me. Now if only I could land a similar deal on their FS-10 footswitch! Blackstar's 40W ID:Cores fill a niche in the market, and offer spectacular value at their price point.

The scathing attack at 21:00 reveals only the following. 1. The reviewer really didn't want to like this amp from the outset, 2. the reviewer didn't spend sufficient time with this amp to come to know it or use its features properly, 3. the reviewer didn't set the amp up in its intended environment where it functions best and use its features as intended, 4. the reviewer's expectations of ANY solid state 10W practice amp appear to be simply ridiculously unrealistic. e.g. Fender Frontman 10, Vox Pathfinder 10. That said, the 10W version of the ID:Core is undeniably the worst performance :price ratio amp in the ID Core range. I can't think of a single reason anyone would buy the 10W version over at least the 20W, or for the not a whole lot more, the 40W.
Perhaps a review of the 40W version would have offered a less hostile perspective? -although I doubt it.
Super Wide Stereo works exceptionally well to saturate the room way above what might be expected of any 40W solid state amp in the 40W version. Blackstar's ID:Core 20 & 40W versions do the job they were purposed for, and importantly, the 40W does at a price point which renders any other amp near it an also ran. As the owner user of multiple amps tube and solid state from Fender, Blackstar et al and the owner of an ID Core 40 who knows his own purchased amps well, without silly misplaced owner pride bias I can say without prejudice that this 'review' isn't worth the price of a sheet of used toilet paper.

      1. The reviewer really didn't want to like this amp from the outset
      Wrong.
      2. the reviewer didn't spend sufficient time with this amp to come to know it or use its features properly
You could argue that, but for me the sounds were such that it wasn't worth spending time with.
      3. the reviewer didn't set the amp up in its intended environment where it functions best and use its features as intended
Sorry I didn't film the video in your average bedroom. It would sound the same in any room.
      4. the reviewer's expectations of ANY solid state 10W practice amp appear to be simply ridiculously unrealistic
Again, wrong. The Roland Micro Cube is way better than this imo, as is the Cube 10GX, Boss Katana Mini, Blackstar Fly imo, so I can have some expectations. I actually remember liking version 2 of this Blackstar more, although that might just be me remebering things wrong. Also, you can get great valve amps for not a lot more than this these days.

@@MrPolevaulter 1. "wrong"= false. That was, is, transparently apparent.
      2. I did argue that, because it was accurate. Everything else you said is invalid straw argument. You'd made you mind up without objective evaluation. Refer back to 1.
      3. Now you're just being being boorishly condescending. Reread the bit "and use its features as intended". You didn't because you didn't take sufficient time to understand how to use them or know the features of this amp and how to apply them.
      4. I have a Fly 3, and Fly 3+103 as well, and am familiar with Katana's Mini compares with those. Your capacity for hyperbole or self-deception to rationalise your belief & position is astounding. As for the final comment about being able to buy a valve amp (implied combo) for "not a lot more than this" I call Sneez..ahchoo..buush1t! =P

    Update..
So, despite my comments regarding the ID Core series, I took the bait and purchased one (ID Core V3 10).
I played it most of the afternoon, and I have to say that Finally, the ID Core sounds right. I really was impressed with the tones offered on this amp. So far, I've used the Super crunch, full gain, medium reverb through my USA Stratocaster and I was not disappointed at all. I feel this amp sounds better than the previous versions 1 & 2 in a way where it sounds a little more raw and less processed.
Of course I've yet to really use all its features, but from a take out from box, plug in, and play perspective, I really like it. I'm not sure that it compares to my Positive Grid Spark amp as far as tones, features, and as a utility tool, but in its most simple form, it rocks.
No pairing with a phone or app, just dial a tone and play. More play, less fucking around with settings and apps.
So, I am eating crow. It's a solid amp for the price, and it does what i need it to do. Plug in, play, switch on, switch off.
Just my two cents. Blackstar did it right this time, and I hope this is the last ID Core series i have to buy!

I also re-amp it through my surround system for far m ore bass and much more volume.. thee amp part is great but needs bigger speakers to really soung good.. I designed a pair of vertical 4 X 12 tower cbs to asddd to this tiny amp through a mod of adding switchee 1/4 in output jacks into the towers direct or through a switching box I can then got fromamp to towers or to the surround system and then to all the speakers in thr system including the towers integrated into the while .. A preliminary test from the 1/8 headphone out jack through a 1/8 stereo to RCA rt and lft into the CD in of my surround receiver ans the surround re-amps it adding bass.., sub woofer included...so a much more full sound overall. thre towers set side by side are in effect a full stack with the Blackstar as a head simce the headphone jack disables the internal speakers when in use.. so for better access to the controle i lay the ampface down so the sontrols are facing forwqrd. like any amp head.. if o use the add4d output lacks that will disablre the internal speakers when in use getting the full power of the amp to amy other destination I choose..

I own a first issue Blackstar ID Core stereo 40 which I bought used at my local Music-Go-Round for $100 USD a few years ago. and then a year after I bought a 'Starcaster' Strat electric guitar By: Fender (said it on the head stock from factory) to do an extreme upgrade/mod to my design. the extended custom hand made brushed stainless steel pick guard loaded with 3 quad rail/coil humbuckers and wired like a 50's Les Paul with coil splitting usinf 3 each P/P volume and 2 norml tone pots and the bridge tone pot also a P/P to activate the bridge and neck P/Ups together regardless of any other controls. Painted in a black and dark blue base with spray cans and airbrushed details, silver micro glitter lightly over-sprayed for effect and finished with Clear Glaze rustoleum gloss clear coat on both body and head stock the pots sport Chrome Tele style knobs and a chrome tip on the Fender 5-way blade switch in addition to the kill button just for fun. I ended up with a beautiful, great feeling, playing and sounding guitar that I can be proud to have built myself on my very first ever guitar build and having the satisfaction of having completing it and learning a lot along the way. the hardest part was getting the wiring all connected and soldering all those connections so that it will function as designed. remember there are 6 500K pots coil splits and the rest. took quite some time to solder all those connections. to save space and because the minimal output current from the P/Ups at mere millivolts I used the small stranded wires stripped out from a computer VGA cable. it worked very well if quite fiddly to make all the connections in the right places and solder all those tiny joints properly..but now it all works the way i designed it to and the number of tones available are too many to count, then add all in the tiny Blackstar amp with all it's in built effects well you wouldnt even want to try to count them all. Lets it's an unlimited variety of tones you can get with this rig. lol so wish me luck. Wanna Play??

You got the 10 watt version when you should have opted for the 40 watt one with a bit larger stereo 6.5 in stereo speakers that sounds much bigger and is a bit louder.the tones are a bit deeper and more full over all. it's a little bigger but still quite small at only 14lbs in weight only lacking the newer features of the later versions I can still use the available free software for the ID Core line.

Fun true story: Daughter's BF got her a cheap electric guitar for her BD (he's a bassist...err...aspiring). Now she's "interested". Translate to: dad, I need an amp, asap! (insert teenage screeching and wailing sounds of despair if not fed amp urgently). Right, princess gets what princess wants. Fame, here she comes. BUT, I don't wanna spend a lot of money, and I especially don't wanna suffer brain damaging noise 5 hours a day...while the, you know, "band" practices. So come on all you experienced people, what do I get her? CLEAN sound is a priority (mine of course).

I have a 20W v3 and it is pretty decent for the price and I love the reverb and delay FX on this amp especially in that stereo effect. I miss not having a footswitch when I need to switch on FX or change patches and it is not available in my country. For people who just want to practice and play the guitar, this is a really good amp. The only dissatisfaction I have with this amp is that the tonal reproduction may sound the same irrespective of the guitar. I have the Fly 3W too which I got before getting the 20W amp, and it doesn't sound that great to me. I think the 20W sounds better than the 10W.

    Actually, it is stereo: 2x5"
For start: I will finish your sentence: crunch and overdrive sound same, just with different amount of gain, am I right? 😁
Cleans are perfect, there are no many amps with 2 cleans, that's very important if you want to chain with pedal(board) or processors.
Crunches are acceptable, but pretty similar (or same?) with gain difference.
But overdrives are really bad, and mutually quite same, just with gain difference.
