In day 2 of this free surf skate course we will be looking at joint sequencing. A big problem a lot of surfers face is a disconnect between the top and bottom half of their bodies, this leads to clunky turns and a style that looks awkward and stiff.
Understanding and training joint sequencing will help you become a much more stylish surfer, when you get this and apply it in the water it will be a game-changer.
    _____________________________________
You see a lot of surfers going for turns and as they've gone into it something goes wrong and get jammed up. They wanted turn left, but the arm swings right. So it's kind of like the body is working against them.
Now, the reason for this is that the top half is moving almost independent of the bottom half and they should move together. So if you watch a golfer swing, when they hit a ball, they're going ankle, knee, hip, shoulder when they swing through. So likewise, if you watch Mick Fanning turn, he's going heel to get the board on rail, knee, hip, and then shoulder.
So riding the surfskates properly and learning how to sequence your joints from the bottom up will really get the board to respond well. So that's what we're going to do next for you.
    Joint sequencing.
That's where surf skates are such good tools. The reason being, it shows you how your body's moving. So if you watch someone on a skateboard, sometimes they try to do a turn that looks like this. The hand goes back and they can't see where they're going. So pretty much, it means that the hand and eye coordination's not quite there. So you'll notice that when my hand was back behind me, my knees almost split into two different directions. My hips lock and it stifles my turn.
So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to do what golfers do, they sequence the joints from the ankle, knee, hip, shoulder. So golfers, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder.
So when I sequence my joints, you'll notice that I have got a lot more peripheral vision plus the style looks better. So push, ankle, knee, hip shoulder, I can see more which makes the turn so much easier.
Now once again, I'll do it with poor joint sequencing and you'll see that my style looks crappy. My peripheral gets halved and the technique's way harder to try to do. The dreaded poo man, not looking good.
Surfskates are great tools for technique.
If you've got a bad habit, they will strengthen your bad habits. If you've got a good habit, they will strengthen your good habits. So careful how you train on them.

A little confused… everything I’ve seen about surfing turns is ‘top-down’ - look where you wanna go, rotate your shoulders, hips and your feet will follow. But it seems you’re saying the opposite… start with your feet?
Obviously in golf this makes sense because the power is released at the top of your body when you swing. But surfing is the opposite… the power is released into the board.
    Am I missing something? 😄

I'm no great shakes surfer but on I can feel what Clay is saying makes sense when I think about surf skate turns. You have to set your feet, engage the rail, activate the knees then the hips - this sets up the board to react to the upper body turn and look phase, which generates the real momentum and energy for the turn. Hopefully I got that right!

Hey Mike, awesome pick up and yes you are right....
With this particular drill we are addressing the disconnection between top and bottom half of the body.
We 100% agree, for example, if you jump the arms lead the legs, if you run the arm lead the legs... However what if they are uncoordinated, how do you fix it? You can ride a bicycle with no hands and point your knees and the bike will follow. In surfing where-ever you point your knees the board will go. Using this drill creates a reconnection between the top and bottom half of the body, once we have that understanding then we can start to work on correct body sequencing for different turns and techniques.

Hey Clayton ! Please learn not to push in opposite on your skateboard, it kills your style when you bring that front leg from the ground to the board 🤪
