WURL ⛰ The Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Linkup

- An irresponsibly epic adventure right in our backyard. The WURL starts at Ferguson Canyon, climbs Twin Peaks, follows the ridge all the way around Litte Cottonwood Canyon, and ends with a descent from Lone Peak down Bell Canyon.
35 miles / 18,000 ft of vertical / 21 named peaks
*Disclaimer. This is not a “hike” this is an extremely dangerous endurance climb. On top of being generally active, I spent the entire summer preparing and climbing segments of the WURL. Even with these preparations, people a lot more skilled and prepared have been hurt or killed along this route. My motto while climbing… “slow is safe.”

I’ve done all the pieces over the last 10 years (I have 82 Pfeiff summits) and I think this 59 year old is finally ready to give it a go! My little brother Matt I think was the 3rd WURLy!
Thanks for sharing your adventure! Awesome job and awesome story!
Thanks!
This video inspired me to send the WURL
This was amazing to watch. Thanks for sharing the emotions along with the adventure.
wow! I see now why your horses are mountain goats! Amazing! Not only a great challenge, a spiritual journey. You are real, rare these days.
And Thank you Derek, you are my hero. ❤
HUGE Congrats on this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks! So fun (and not really) but still fun
Epic!!! Congrats man! What an accomplishment
Thank you. It was amazing. Such an experience.
Your a beast Derek, outstanding adventure 👏👏👏
Thank you! I was a fun one 😂
Bro, nice work! I've thought about WURL, but very little. Now I need to! Looks so sweet. Great vid too!
Thanks man! I trained enough to survive, not thrive 😂 you have the best view of the WURL in the whole valley… you and Matt should go for it. Bring John P along for Team Lovers Ln.
Great and important emotions. ❤️
Thank you. I was a bit worn down and sleep-deprived! 😂 Lots of feels happening
Absolute Beast Mode! Didn’t realize you were from SLC. I’m in SLC this week for business but I promise I won’t be doing the Wasatch Wurl. Well done sir. Beautiful family. Beautiful emotion.
Thank you! Welcome to Utah 😊 yeah, the sleep deprivation and effort wore me down a bit!
Mad respect! I will do this one day!
Nice 👍
Subbed. One of the only vids on the WURL around. Well done on the vid, and absolutely phenomenal job on knocking out a WURL bid.
Thanks! It was an epic journey. Had a few surprises come up but I made it 😂
You had said that you grew up around there. Had you done most of the peaks on their own, prior to attempting the full wurl? It's been on my radar for a few years, but it seems like there's a huge benefit to prior experience on some of those peaks. I don't mind loose rocks, scrambling and exposure, but trying to navigate that type of terrain in the dark without prior knowledge of the route seems pretty sketch.
Yes. I had done 90% of the route the summer before I did the WURL (in August). I wish I had done 100% the 10% of unknown was rough… 😅😅
When the memory of how horrible that was wears off, and you feel like doing it again, hit me up. I’m in.
😂 that may take a while!
Very cool.
Thanks! 🏔️
I felt so much stress watching this.
Next life time!
I would like to complete the WURL next summer. How did you train for this and do you have any key things you did in your training that your glad you did?
This was awesome -- this has been on my list for several years now after I saw Mediocre do it on their channel. I live down in AZ in Scottsdale -- ironically, I was in the SLC area when you did this (edit, nevermind, I was there just in 2023 August) I had a work event in park city. I did Gobbler's Knob and Raymond 8/23, Olympus 8/24, and Pfeifferhorn 8.26, before hitting Kings and then the Grand Teton before flying home. I have a relatively new hiking channel with a lot of stuff on it. This upcoming summer, I want to do the WURL, so if you wanna do it again lmk! But otherwise, I'll probably want to pick your brain on beta as I haven't done a ton research on it, but I'm no stranger to long hard hikes
I was scared in the first 30 seconds!! NO WAY
😳 totally!
Awesome video! Also from the valley and have done a couple of these peaks. I can’t imagine doing it all in one go but I’d really like to one day. I’m curious what peak/ridge section you think is the most technical and sketchy?
Thanks! The most technical section is the ridge from twin peaks to Alta.. the first third. The second third has devils castle and the back third isn’t easy either, especially with the mental and physical fatigue. Best of luck, stay safe, take your time!
Thanks
Can you preschedule a Search and Rescue chopper?
Devils castle at night must have been fun. What’s the part with the most exposure?
Luckily I had done the Devils Castle segment a few weeks earlier, so I had it fresh in my mind. But yeah, crazy to just see black edges…
The first third has the most exposure. The ridge from Twin Peaks to Alta. Especially around Monte Cristo. That’s the video intro. Not technical but exposed for sure.
Holy hiking! What an adventure! Good for you Derek, thats a huge accomplishment. Did you not sleep at all??
😊 No sir. The WURL is meant to be done from start to finish without sleeping!
@@HavenTents I figured that as there didn't seem to be anywhere reasonable to sleep. Plus I knew I'd see the Haven if you had slept. Youre a machine man, congratulations.
Ps I just got my haven last week and have been out 3 times already, including an elk camp here in Saskatchewan. I absolutely love it! Thanks for making a great product and producing inspiring videos.
@@davidmodeland429 that’s amazing! Sounds like you’re getting after it as well 👏 thanks for commenting!
What was your training like for this? Eg. vert/mileage on long outings. Such a huge feat!
So I’ve always been active. But every week this spring/summer I’d log one long hike (average 8-9 miles) and something small. I also used the training to scout and familiarize myself with the route.
Even then. I trained enough to survive, not thrive 😂
Rough terrain. Do you think that hiking poles would have helped or hindered?
I went back-and-forth on the poles. I think the one place they would come in handy is descending from the lone peak ridge down to Bell Canyon (the notch). Because you have a mix of rock and sand.
Everywhere else with trail is pretty easy to navigate… and poles would be a real hassle in the rock scrambling.
I guess it would be nice for navigating some of the flat boulder fields too.
One hell of a hike! Did you just trek on through the night or did you sleep at any point along the way?
Just trek!
@@HavenTents What an animal! Congratulations on the accomplishment brother! Did you keep that coat or leave it out there for the next ill-prepared WURLer? 😆
@@dayneeastman1316 great Q! It was getting very hot day 2… my whole weather plan kind of fell apart. So I gave it to one of the hikers I met to carry down. Not sure what he did with it. But it was timely for sure.
What mountain was the first clip??
That’s the saddle between Monte Cristo and Mt Superior. Looking back at Monte Cristo.
Does the Ferguson trail go to the twin peaks? Is it a hard trail to stay on?
Hey! The Ferguson Canyon Trail in Utah is popular, but it doesn't go directly to Twin Peaks. The Ferguson Canyon Trail primarily leads to a waterfall, and reaching the Twin Peaks typically involves taking a separate route. ✌️
You said you had only a bit of youth left. How old were you when you completed this?
😂 36! I got some more in me 😉
