I have used old refrigerator crisper drawers on work benches. They are made of metal, have a lip on both sides and the back, and they come with their own handle. Plus there is no wasted space, cause you require only clearance space, which is minimal between the top of one and the bottom of the other. Every refrigerator on the side of the Road comes with 2. Keep the matching pair stacked, because they can be different widths from one refrigerator to the next.
I’ve used metal, one gallon, paint thinner cans. You cut out one side, roll the sharp edges over. They have a nice handle, are durable and hold up very well.
I remember as a child seeing baby food jar lids screwed onto a board and then you would fill glass jar with screws and twist onto lid, they would hang from top of work bench and you could see sizes inside. Anyone remember seeing those?

Great just what I needed. I have two empty jugs and son built a new work bench. Grandson can make him a father's day gift. I even have some wood around. Thanks so much for sharing.
@Rob Sartori, your idea is great if it was another material than a plastic jug. Sure, you can reinforce the bottom with a piece of wood, but there's no good space to put a piece of wood at the upper part.
What I find is also handy for nails, screws, bolts, etc is clear plastic bottles with a square base, screw top and a handle stood on a shelf. You can see what's in there and with a square base they stand next to each other efficiently and the handle good for grabbing them off the shelf. Its easy to pour a few out into a small pot to do jobs with and put the rest back on the shelf so no risk of spilling the lot on the floor.

This is an ingenious idea to use these plastic containers! I've done similar stuff but this gives me ideas to organize things. This video was NOT A WASTE OF TIME! Comments are jealous!
I've fabricated similar, and what I like about the plastic from these kinds of containers is that it's seemingly almost indestructible while, in comparison, the plastic used for purpose made fastener trays (like what you'd find in your typical big box DIY center) seems to crack in short order. And while my dad did use the baby jar idea so many many years ago, I like to use clear plastic vitamin jars instead, if only because there's obviously less risk of breakage. Well, that's my 2 cents worth...
