I was just at Lakin Dam looking for Redband but only got a bunch of browns. Could you tell me what your "lightly weighted nymph" setup is? Do you use splitshot to get it down or just rely on the fly alone?
I used either a tag nymph, like a blowtorch (I'm a creature of habit) or a pheasant tail or something similar. I don't use split shot if I can avoid it (I usually can by just using heavier flys). Lightly weighted in this context was a 2mm-3mm tungsten bead. If the water gets really shallow or you want to strip really slowly, you may have to go lighter, and of course if the water is deeper or faster you may have to go heavier. And that's with 6x. If you use thicker tippet you may have to upsize the bead to compensate for the slower sink rate. I was using maybe size 16-18 flies for the most part.
Hey Summer, Did you compete the 6 species minimum for the heritage trout challenge? We fished a lot of the exact same water this year :) Is there a way to contact you in a private message concerning some Coast Range head water streams that I would not like to go public with ? Duane
Hey, yeah, I got the last a couple weeks ago and am planning to start work on the master this coming summer. Email is great: abushinthewoods@gmail.com.
That is incorrect. On two levels, actually. One, I do check the regs. Religiously. Two, those waters are open. All rivers in CA are open unless subject to special regulations. 14 CCR s 5.85. Trout Creek is not listed in the special regs, so it's open. The McCloud is only subject to special regulations between McCloud Dam and the confluence of Ladybug Creek (open all year but with gear restrictions) and between the confluence with Ladybug Creek and Lake Shasta (also open all year but gear restrictions, i.e., artificial barbless hooks only.) The special regs for the McCloud are at p. 64 of the 2024-2025 Freshwater Sport Fishing Regs. Neither the McCloud nor Trout Creek are listed in the supplement. So, yeah, open.
Beautiful Fish thanks for the video!

You are fishing closed waters. Check the rules and regulations
