  • Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O’Connor on songwriting, touring and mortality.
Shane MacGowan wrote the song ‘Haunted’ for the soundtrack to the 1986 film ‘Sid and Nancy’. The film focuses on the relationship between Sid Vicious, bassist with punk band the Sex Pistols and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen.
Originally performed by The Pogues, Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan recorded their version of the song in 1992 and it was released as a single in 1995.
Shane knew both Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen and while ‘Haunted’ is emotional and sad,
It’s happy in a way cos they’re reunited somewhere else.
Both singers have fears about their own mortality. Sinéad O’Connor finds herself worrying over,
What are we all doing here, how does the earth hang in space and what’s going to happen to me when I die, is it going to be slow and painful.
She does not think that Shane McGowan’s choice of lifestyle makes his life more difficult than it needs to be as everyone makes their own rules.
What’s difficult for you might not be difficult for Shane.
As song writers both have different approaches. Shane McGowan takes inspiration from anything, be it a memory of something that happened, or something he was told,
I like a few drinks and like I’ve had a good few ideas for songs in pubs.
Sinéad O’Connor often writes songs on plane journeys. Her songs are personal and songwriting is how she talks to herself and tries to find herself.
Shane still enjoys performing and is about to go on an American tour.
Its the most exciting thing you can do, play a good gig.
Sinéad is also about to tour, but it is less easy for her to do.
I’m a mother also so I’ve got to put a bit of time in there too.
This episode of ‘Kenny Live’ was broadcast on 22 April 1995. The presenter is Pat Kenny.

That's right, eh? Sinéad O'Connor died THIS year?! 2023, eh? Wow...yeah - you're right. Awfully sad. Thank goodness that we have these videos to remember these 2 legends (Shane and The Pogues were easily my favourite band ever when I was about 16 or 17 years old). Their first three albums are all 10/10's for me. Peace & Love had some nice songs and so did Hell's Ditch, but they didn't measure up to the band's first 3 perfect albums.

Well told off by my sons. Irish Ambassador Rome advised me best in Eire for renewal passport so 'going home' to reinstate my passport. Irish forces are obliged under the Poblacht to only take up arms for Eire. We've wonderful soldiers in Cyprus and all ... PEACEKEEPING. Studying my Gaelic (not easy) and I have a Cork accent! Nought wrong with Cork apparently just accents ... should blend in well. LOVE AT THE BORDER WHEN THE GUARDA ET AL SAY 'WELCOME HOME, DEIRDRE'. ITALY CAN DO WITHOUT ME FOR A BIT ....

Man.. I remember hanging out with Shane at this time when Vicky was shacked up with the Fat Monk in San Francisco. This was a horrible time and not fun or the usual bright light that was having many sleepless nights hanging with Shane. The man literally cried for a year and had no creative drive whatsoever. He just talks about her here and starts to cry. He was soo kind and warm hearted. Seeing him being punished was hard to see.

I always cringe when I see Sinéad from 1995. She looks like she might be the twin sister of my girlfriend at the time and later the mother of our daughter. She was a beautiful woman. We separated in 2001 but remained friends. Unfortunately, a few years later she started drinking alcohol and became a sad person. I tried to help her but it was useless. I then had to bring my daughter home with me because she was suffering from her mother's condition. She was then with me for 5 years until she started her own life in 2021. She inherited her mother's beauty. From me she probably has the strength to defy life when things get difficult. Rest in peace Shane and Sinéad!
