Baptism means full immersion of water, it is an exchange, not just a symbol. Your old self gets buried with Christ in the waters(die with Christ) and you rise up a new creation. The exchange is your sins are washed away, taken from you and placed on Jesus, and He gives you his righteousness. ...notice that biblically no baby was baptized, it was adults who knew true repentance

Jesus wasn't baptized when he was a baby, in fact you can't find baby's being baptized in the bible, you have to be old enough to know right from wrong then you get baptized for the remission of sins.

Faith alone saves you. So if any of you in the comments are worried about your salvation always remember that we can’t earn our salvation. Salvation is a free gift. And to receive that gift all you have to do is believe the gospel.

If faith alone saves us why repent ? Salvation is a free gift , that we recieve by obeying the gospel command to repent, be water baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and recieving the Holy Spirit. The Word " recieve", in the N.T.s original Greek means " to take hold of".

Much respect to you. I don’t consider you an enemy. But there is some clarification needed here. The problem I see with the statement you made is, it is opposite of what the Bible teaches. You say that we are saved by faith ALONE, but the Bible says that we are NOT saved by faith alone.
      James 2:24
You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
We also have an example of people who believed in Jesus (faith), but they would not confess Him in John 12:42. If by your statement all one needs to do is believe then even these individuals who would not confess Christ would have been saved. But they were not.
"Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Without a doubt faith is a part of the salvation process, but we can’t focus only on faith to the exclusion of other passages. It ALL must harmonize together.
The same is true with baptism. In addition to other commands of GOD, We must be be water baptized for (in order to have) the remission of sin (Acts 2:38).
      Hope this is helpful!

I hope no one has altered your belief in faith and belief in these RUclips comments. Many do not understand the warnings of James and the writer of Hebrew’s on the difference between TRUE faith (belief in Gods word/promises and faithfulness towards God’s commands) vs EMPTY belief ( pretend Christian’s, a form of godliness but denying the power thereof, even Satan KNOWS God is real).
True faith saves and that’s it. Abraham was saved because he BELEIVED God’s promise, acted according to the promise and God counted his FAITH as righteousness. NOT his work of almost sacrificing up his son which was just a test to build up his faith.
True faith leads to obedience and Jesus notes this when he says “ if you love me you will obey my commandments” BUT doing works in and of itself DOES NOT save. Be baptized because you are commanded to but don’t think being dunked in water saves you. Just like many Protestants don’t believe taking the Eucharist saves you from sin( like what Catholics teach). It’s silly and mockery of the realities of salvation. You are saved when you believe on Christ and are baptized into his body, death, resurrection and glorification (Romans 8). And are “sealed for eternity for the day of redemption” - Ephesians 2.
God bless and be assured of your salvation in Christ Jesus alone.

I ran into this debate recently and what caught my attention is that someone said “why would you not be baptized if given the chance?”
So necessary to go to heaven I don’t think so, but I think it’s necessary to live your life and claim to be a Christian by following His commands which include Baptism.

baptism has a few facets of meaning in scripture and often can be a rite of passage description or a journey for self discovery or destiny. Here’s an example
      Matthew 20:22 NKJV
[22] But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to Him, "We are able."
      Matthew 20:23 NKJV
[23] So He said to them, "You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father."
And I think Jesus makes a distinction baptism when talking to the pharisees in that it may not be a literal water act but rather a spiritual act.
      Matthew 21:25 NKJV
[25] The baptism of John-where was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
It can be both but its seemingly primarily an act of washing of the spirit vs an act of water.
      Luke 3:3 NKJV
[3] And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching -a baptism of- repentance for the remission of sins,
“A baptism of” interesting wording right? It seems to be directional and descriptive of a separate act versus something related to water.
And I think Jesus makes it a little more stringently clear with…
      Mark 1:15 NKJV
[15] and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."
Repenting in itself is an act of baptism.
I suspect John the Baptist was a literal foretelling of the spiritual that was to come. John the Baptist had to start the process of understanding for the masses where Jesus completes from the spiritual side of things much as he describes in John 6.
      Acts 1:5 NKJV
[5] for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." -Jesus
I think TRUE baptism comes from belief and water baptism is our outward unashamed act of showing our new faith in Christ. Only one of these saves.
In this way the thief was baptized by the spirit on the cross.

Know this...this life us but a vapor, short, but peace, serenity, unspeakable joy and love await us in Heaven and that is eternal. I will pray for you. Jesus will answer your sincere prayers. if you continue reading the next few verses they spoke the word of the lord to the phillian jailer they told him to repent get baptized in jesus name and he obed Jesus said go and preach the gospel he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved Mark 16:15 - 18

    • @martin9410
      @martin9410 6 лет назад +7

Actually that is not entirely true. Here is what is actually said, "And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. 33 And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household." You're are adding to God's Word. It said nothing in that passage about "repent...in Jesus' Name." You're reading into the text. And of course it made perfect sense that they would explain the Word more throughly, for the jailer probably knew very little of Jesus in his world. If one were required to be baptized for salvation, that would have been included in Paul and Silas' answer. Please read the text more carefully and don't be adding words to the Biblical text.
Regarding the Mark passage. Most ancient manuscripts don't even have the verses from vs. 9 till the end of the chapter (probably included by a scribe). But that doesn't matter. It can be easily answered. Those who were believing and were baptized were saved. The next part you didn't quote is that those that don't believe are condemned. Belief saved and those who believe were autonomically baptized. That's like me saying, "those who have a driver's license and drive cars are legal, but those who don't have a driver's license are not legal." In other words, it's assumed if you have a driver's license, you will drive a car, but you're still legal, even if you don't drive a car.
I don't know why people always leave out the part of the verse they don't want to discuss. And why do you leave out all the faith only passages? There are 100s of passages about being saved just by faith and only a few isolate passages on the surface (when taken out of context) that appear to say otherwise.
      Have a nice day.

Mark 16:16 Jesus told the apostles right before he rose up to be with God. He who believes and is baptized shal be saved. He who does not believe shall be condemned. In this verse, Jesus taught us two truths. 1. How to be saved and 2. How to be condemned. I chose #1. How about you. The thief on the cross had Jesus personally there with him telling the thief he would be with Jesus in Paradise that very day. Jesus also told us that he could forgive sins while he was on earth, as he did the crippled man. He told the Jews. Is it easier to say your sins are forgiven or rise and walk. But that you may believe, arise and walk. So Jesus had the authority on earth to forgive sins as he did the Thief. But now that he has gone to be with God, Jesus commanded, He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. I do not know which part of that command some people do not want to accept.

    • @100fredkrueger

Apple Pie your correct partially. Johns baptism was for repentance. Jesus’ baptism was for the forgiveness of sin. Acts 2:38 Peter tells the people how to be saved. The people asked what they should do and Peter responded by saying, “ repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That is the plainest verse there is instructing is how to be “saved”. But you will never hear someone who is against baptism for salvation mention this verse.

    • @martin9410
      @martin9410 6 лет назад +7

You made the comment regarding Acts 2:38, "But you will never hear someone who is against baptism for salvation mention this verse." And yet as you highlight that verse, you will never hear someone who believes that baptism is what saves you, allude to the almost 160 passages that say that salvation is by faith (by calling on His Name). I preached for over twenty years in the Church of Christ so I well understand why you hand your hat on that one verse. And your statement is incorrect. I have heard Acts 2:38 alluded to on many occasions by those who believe you're saved by faith on Christ alone. If you study the Greek word, "eis" which is used for the word, "for," in Acts 2:38, it is primary used in the New Testament to mean "because of." And there are now some translations that are translating it more accurately. So it is "repent and everyone of you be baptized because of remission of sins..." The meaning here is that they are first told to repent. Notice that this is told to the entire assembly as a collective group. "Repent," means a "change of mind." In this case, a change of mind about who Jesus is. In other words, to now place your faith and trust in Jesus, turn to him. And then Peter says, "Let each one of you," now he's addressing what they should individually do, once they've believed upon the Lord Jesus, "be baptized because of remission of sins." We see afterwards, "those that received the word were baptized..." They received it by believing on His Name. We also notice earlier in his message, he quotes the Old Testament and says in vs. 21 "And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved." This ties in nicely with the overwhelming passages of Scriptures that say you are saved by faith or belief.
Just a correction on what you said about John's baptism. In Mark 4:1 we read that John was "preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." So it was also a baptism "for the forgiveness of sins." However, again, it's how we translate the Greek word, "eis." It should read that he was "preaching a baptism of repentance because of the forgiveness of sins."
you mentioned in your comment regarding Acts 2:38, "That is the plainest verse there is instructing is how to be 'saved'. I would respectfully disagree. I think Jesus' comments are the plainest passages on instructing how to be saved. Jesus said, "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:40
I could mention about a 160 other passages not only of Jesus, but of the Apostles and others. But to say Acts 2:38 is the plainest verse on salvation would be a misnomer.

@@bobfree1226 Where does it say in scriptures that baptism does not save?? I'll wait. Ryan is correct in his reference to 1 Peter 3: 19-22. Verse 21 said, "It (baptism) saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ." Don't contradict the scriptures. My NIV translation says the same thing his ESV translation says. In baptism, one is making a pledge of a good conscience to God. You raised the issue of someone about to die in a pending plane crash. If he prayed that similar prayer you texted knowing he is about to die, then he is cheapening the grace of God. That so-called prayer is often called the sinner's prayer. Where in the scriptures does it show people in the New Testament praying the sinner's prayer for salvation?? Again, I'll wait. The sinner's prayer was not commanded by Jesus, so no mention of it in the scriptures. As for the plane issue, it was invented 100 years ago. Christianity has been around for 2000 years. No one prior to year 1900 could object using the case of a person about to die in a plane crash. For nearly 2000 years since Christ's Great Commision charge (Matthew 28: 18-20, where one becomes a disciple in baptism), people have died everyday without coming to Christ on HIS terms, even if they knew about Christ in the bible and didn't obey Him. Yes, Jesus died for everyone; but the road to Hell is broad and the road to Heaven is narrow. So most people will not come to the cross of Christ in baptism. Check out Romans 6: 3-4, where it says baptism is a participation in Christ's death, burial and resurrection. So in baptism, you come to the cross when you crucify your sinful self, get buried and rise to a new life in Christ. Praying the sinner's prayer is not a participation in Christ's death, burial and resurrection. Col. 2: 12-13 says "...having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him, through your faith in the working of God who raised Him from the dead." God did the work in saving someone in baptism.

This post is regarding the baptismal invocation (what is spoken by the person who is conducting the baptism). Today the POPULAR PRACTICE is different than it was ORIGINALLY done. ORIGINALLY, they spoke Jesus name. BUT, today they commonly speak the terms: "father-son-spirit". Which invocation is the Biblical practice? Answer: The invocation speaking Jesus name. The following is just one approach for people to see that this is true. The Bible and early theologians/scholars used to write about the invocation describing it in a few ways, that all point to Jesus name being spoken. One common way to refer to that is "Baptism in the name of Christ," the Son, the Son of God, into Christ, etc. See if you can recognize this pattern in the below content....
Baptism in the Name of Christ:
Acts 8:5, 12, 35 Philip preached “Jesus” “Christ”
Acts 9:15 Paul would bear Jesus Christ’s name before the Gentiles
Acts 9:27 says Paul preached “in the NAME OF JESUS”
And in Acts 9:29 “he spake boldly in the NAME OF THE LORD JESUS...”
Luke 24:46-47 “...it behoved Christ to suffer [Who are we talking about? Answer: “Christ”]”
47 “...REMISSION OF SINS SHOULD BE PREACHED IN HIS NAME [Jesus Christ]”
What was that name that Peter preached, in Acts 2:21, that would save? Answer: JESUS CHRIST!
What name did Acts 4:10-12 say that would save? Answer: JESUS CHRIST!

Dr. Brown, I both agree with you on this and disagree with you. May I ask you the following?
    1) Are we Commanded to be Baptized?
    2) Is it a sin to break a Commandment of God?
    3) Can a person WILLFULLY AND UNREPENTANTLY sin, and still be saved?
If it is a Commandment to be Baptized, and breaking a Commandment of God is a sin, and if willful unrepentant sin disqualifies one from salvation, then it follows that willfully refusing to be Baptized disqualifies one from salvation.
This is why Peter teaches that Baptism Saves but then qualifies that it is not the actual water that saves, but the answer of a good conscience towards God that saves. Baptism is not merely an outward sign, but it points to a very real internal working of God, it begins with hearing the Gospel, and the call to repent, and it results in faith and repentance which culminates (whenever it is possible) in the outward working of Baptism.
True Faith and True Salvation always leads a believer to the waters, that entire series of events is all called Baptism (the answer of a good conscience towards God), and is symbolized by the outward work of Water Baptism, but that symbol points to and illustrates a very real, supernatural, spiritual event taking place that is called Salvation.

I'm not Dr Brown, but I just wanted to comment. In answering your questions - 1) yes 2) yes 3) ????
I think the point Dr Brown was trying to make was, if we're commanded to be baptized, and a person is saved, then they will want to be obedient and be baptized. If a person says they're saved yet refuses to be baptized, their refusal speaks more to the genuineness of their commitment to God than the idea that they're not truly 'saved' until they're immersed in water. Does that make sense?

baptism has a few facets of meaning in scripture and often can be a rite of passage description or a journey for self discovery or destiny.

It is dangerous to rely on or use hypotheticals (man's reasoning, i.e. "if somebody is converted and dies in a plane crash", etc.) to interpret scripture or formulate Bible doctrine. It is the remission of sins that water baptism in Jesus' name, in conjunction with authentic repentance, accomplishes. The remission of sins is necessary for salvation.

Jesus placed baptism before salvation and that should settle the issue (Mark 16:16). Peter said that “baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21). That should settle the issue. Yet there have been many arguments advanced in the attempt to convince people that baptism is not essential for salvation.
“In 1 Corinthians 1:17, Paul said that Christ did not send him to baptize, therefore baptism is not part of the gospel and is not essential to salvation”
Yet, everywhere that Paul preached the gospel in the Book of Acts people were baptized. Paul preached to Lydia and she was baptized (Acts 16:14-15). The same is true of the Philippian Jailor (Acts 16:33), and people in Ephesus (Acts 19:9).
The very people that Paul is writing to in the Corinthian letter were baptized when Paul preached to them: Acts 18:8
Paul even mentions specific individuals in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 that he had baptized (1:14-16).
The problem in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 is not baptism, rather it was division in the church at Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:11), based on following men (1:12), which in turn was founded on the erroneous assumption on the Corinthians part that you followed the man who had personally baptized you (1:15). This is the context in which Paul says, “Christ did not send me to baptize”. That is, it was not Paul’s task or job to personally baptize everyone who responded to the gospel.
The essential nature of baptism is actually seen in this chapter. In 1 Corinthians 1:13 Paul makes the argument that the only way that anyone could rightly call themselves “after Paul” is that Paul must have been crucified for that person, and that person would then have to be baptized in the name of Paul.
Therefore, a person cannot wear the name of Christ (call themselves a Christian) unless they had been baptized into the name of Christ. Obviously, if Jesus did not die for me, then I cannot be a Christian. Just as obvious, if I have not be baptized in His name (Acts 2:38) I am not a Christian either.
“What about the thief on the cross? Wasn’t he saved without being baptized?”
While Jesus was on earth He had the power to the forgive sins of people He encountered (Mark 2:10).
The command to be baptized in Mark 16:16 was given after Jesus forgave the thief and after both Jesus and the thief died.
The thief lived, died and was forgiven under the First Covenant or the Old Testament period. Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection started a New Covenant, which includes the command to be baptized to be saved (Hebrews 9:15-17).
“What about people who die on the way to be baptized?”
First, I have never heard of such a case and we don’t have any cases like this recorded in the Bible. Jesus knows every possible “what-if” and yet still commanded us to be baptized to be saved (Mark 16:16).
If we say that God is going to save the person on the way to be baptized if a tree limb falls on them---then jump to the conclusion that this means that baptism is not necessary for salvation. Then the same argument could be used against any condition for salvation, including repentance, confession or faith. So what about the person who is going to hear the gospel, will believe, but a tree limb falls on them before they hear the gospel and believe, does that mean that the gospel and faith are not necessary for salvation?
My experience has been that falling tree limbs and car accidents are not the thing to be worried about. Rather, what is deadly is putting off being baptized and simply allowing one opportunity after another to pass by (Acts 22:15; 24:25).
“Suppose a man is in a desert and wants to be saved, yet there isn’t enough water to baptize him?”
Yet John the Baptist was baptizing in the Judean wilderness (which is a desert) and was baptizing all sorts of people (Matthew 3:1, 5-6).
Anywhere in the world where there isn’t enough water to be baptized is equally a place where man cannot survive physically. People who live in desert regions have wells, they have livestock, and there is enough water to bathe, clean, water their livestock, cook and to be immersed.
The man who is away from enough water to be baptized does not have to stay there. Saul waited for three days to hear a preacher command him to be baptized (Acts 9:9). Someone intent on being saved will find enough water in which to be baptized as soon as possible (Acts 8:36).
“Baptism is a work and Paul said that we are saved by grace through faith and not by works”
Observe that the major or well known passages that tell us that we are not saved by works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9) have baptism mentioned in the passage (Titus 3:5 “washing of regeneration”) in the context (“and raised us up with Christ” (Ephesians 2:6) or in the epistle as being very essential (Ephesians 4:4-6 “One baptism”).
The work or works that do not save us are works of man’s invention. Yet baptism is a command of God (Acts 2:38; Luke 7:28-29).
Jesus and the Apostles never saw a contradiction between faith and baptism, that one was faith and the other was works. Rather, they always placed faith and baptism together (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 8:12; 18:8).
In Colossians 2:12 it is made very clear that we do not do the work in baptism, rather, God is doing all the work in baptism.
When Paul said that we are not saved by works, he is not saying that there are no conditions for salvation or that no effort is needed on our part. Taking the time to hear the gospel and give it an honest hearing takes work. Making the decision to side with God, and believe takes a lot of work. Confronting the sin in one’s life and turning from sin and to God (repentance) that takes work. Confessing Christ takes work (Romans 10:9-10). Actually, of all the conditions mentioned prior to salvation (hearing the gospel, faith, repentance, confession and baptism), baptism actually is the most passive.
Many of those who claim that baptism is a work that does not save, actually have invented their own substitute for this essential condition that Jesus commanded. In many churches where people are told that one is saved by faith alone, when it really comes down to being saved they are also told to believe in Jesus, accept Him as their personal Savior, let Him into their heart, come forward and then say the “Sinner’s Prayer”. Wait a minute. Where is that in Ephesians 2:8-9? I can find baptism in that context, book and in the New Testament, yet I cannot find the “Sinner’s Prayer”.
“In Mark 16:16, Jesus doesn’t say, ‘He who is not baptized shall be condemned”
Jesus did not need to add “and is not baptized”. The failure to believe will stop a person dead in their tracks. If a person does not believe and is baptized, they just go wet. Every condition for salvation is equally essential. If I don’t listen to the gospel, I cannot believe (Romans 10:17). If I don’t believe, my confession and baptism will be meaningless. If I don’t repent, then my confession and baptism are meaningless. If I don’t confess Christ, then my faith is worthless (John 12:42-43). And if I refuse to be baptized, then I really did not believe Jesus in the first place (Acts 8:35-36; 16:30-34; 2:41).

Have you ever read in the bible about Philip the eunuch, in Acts chapter 8 start at verse 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Now, do you think that when Philip preached to the eunuch about Jesus, and when the eunuch said here is water, what hinder me to be baptized? Philip didn't say, oh not now, we are suppose to arrange a time for you to be baptized., why?
Because part of being saved being baptized, your sins are not washed away until you are baptized, therefore you are not saved until your sins are washed away. So baptism must be done as soon as the sinner has believed, repented, and confessed Jesus as the Son of God. And the eunuch did those things so now he is ready to be baptized. So what hinders him? Philip said... If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And the eunuch answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he was baptized.
Did he wait, was he baptized the next night or the next week? No
I myself was baptized in the middle of the night. I was raised in a Christian home, and I have heard Jesus preached many many times, then one night about 3am, I realized I wanted to become a child of God, I wanted to be a Christian. I called our minister and told him of my wishes, and he was so happy, he said ok, I will meet you at the church building, so by the time I got ready and had someone come to get me and take me to the church building, I was baptized at 4:45 a.m. that same morning..Now if I had died on the way to get baptized. I am not saved because baptism is for the remission of sins, and a person is not saved until they are baptized.

I may be wrong here, so please forgive my ignorance. I understand that true baptism is by accepting Jesus you are spiritually baptized, not by water, but by the blood and supreme sacrifice if Jesus and genuine faith and love for Him. Baptism, as I understand it is only and outward sign for the benefit of those witnessing it, to inspire and motivate them to accept the free grace of our Lord Jesus. The thief on the cross, people moments from death were not baptized, yet Jesus said to the thief who at the last moment of his life recognized and accepted Jesus as the Son of God and the Savior and Jesus said "Today you shall be with me in paradise " How do you reconcile that baptism is required for the remission of sins?. In my view that severely diminishes the perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. "Jesus is the way, the Truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by Him" Not water baptism. Baptism is a foreshadowing of Jesus ultimate loving sacrifice for all time for those who believe and accept. He took all sin upon Himself for our pitiful, sinful sakes.

Not what Romans 6: 1-4 says. So baptism (like belief and repentance) is part of the salvation process, because that is when you die to sins, get buried in water and be raised to a new life. You come to the cross of Christ in baptism and participate in Christ's death, burial and resurrection. Therefore, baptism is not a symbol. Belief is not enough.

One of the areas where Dr Brown is gravely mistaken.
    1. Deathbed confessions don't prove anything. We shouldn't take extreme or very rare situations and apply them to everyone else--that's not logical. Let God be the judge in those scenarios, not us.
    2. 1 Peter 3:21 is clear as day "baptism now SAVES you". However, there is a big misunderstanding that people who teach water baptism is essential teach works salvation. WE DO NOT TEACH WORKS SALVATION. In fact, if you think about it....comparing faith vs. baptism for example..."faith" is much more of an active work than baptism is--baptism is submission! Letting God do all the work. It's funny how people turn that around.
    3. As Romans 6 clearly teaches, water baptism is symbol of us being BURIED into Christ's death, and RAISING to walk in newness of life.
How can we be IN Christ if we haven't been baptized into Him? We are still dead in our trespasses!
Stop trying to over-think scripture...acknowledge what is plainly teaches. Water baptism is essential to the process...but it's all by God' grace!

You quote only the part of 1 Peter 3:21 that suits your argument. You should have quoted the entire verse. Peter after having said, "baptism saves you," goes on to say that it is an "antitype," or "like unto figure." He didn't want them to misunderstand him. He was saying that it doesn't save literally, it's a symbol of our salvation. And just to be more clear he said, "It's not the removal of dirt from the flesh..." Even ancient Jewish ritual baptisms were never a removal of dirt from the flesh. Peter is referring to the fact that it's not that this water cleanses us of our sin. So he's saying the exact opposite of your point and reason for using this verse.
Actually you do teach "works salvation." If you don't have to do works to get saved, you don't have to do works to keep saved. Either Jesus has to power to remove all your sin or none of it. In fact, the Bible tells us that our salvation is eternally secure. Paul tells us that our salvation has been "sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption."
You have the first comment right in your point number 3. "As Romans 6 clearly teaches, water baptism is symbol of us being BURIED into Christ's death, and RAISING to walk in newness of life." Couldn't agree more, it is a symbol.
Water baptism is essential in the fact that Jesus commanded it. It is not essential regarding salvation, Jesus is! Stop trying to overthink Scripture. I think if you just read the Gospel of John, everything will clear up for you. Be blessed.

@@martin9410 Thank you for your resonse! My reply is a little lengthy, so thank you in advance for reading it. God bless you as well. Though my response is blunt, it is certainly with care and love.
I am not taking 3:21 out of context. Let's break down the context:
"18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him."
Vs. 18 -- i could say a lot, but the main point here is that because Jesus was resurrected (conquering death), we can all have eternal life through Him.
Vs. 19 to 20 -- after Jesus died physically, He preached the truth to all the dead souls (in Hades/Sheol) who were destroyed by the flood in Noah's day. And the end of the verse is important to our discussion because Noah + his family were "saved through water" (this is the symbol which Peter expounds upon next)
Vs. 21 -- unlike the rituals of the ancient Jewish traditions, the baptism into Jesus (of Spirit AND water) does 2 things: 1 -- it is part of the process of being BORN AGAIN (see end of verse) and 2 --it gives a good conscious before God. God doesn't need us to get dipped in water to save us...but He created baptism FOR OUR SAKE...because we are still physical creatures and so physical things help us to an extent with spirituality. Look at the Lord's Supper/Communion...does God need us really to eat unleavened bread and drink grape juice? I don't think so...Yes it is a commandment, but it's mainly for our benefit--it helps US remember because we are physical creatures so having something tangible to remember our Lord by is helpful, even though it's really Jesus body and blood that saves us, not a piece of bread and a sip of juice.
Vs. 22 -- Jesus is alive forevermore, in the Spirit, right next to God, and has all authority over not only Christians but the whole world.
Understand me, I agree that there is nothing special about the water itself. It is only necessary, special, and important BECAUSE GOD SAID SO and created a purpose for it. Faith, confession, repentance, AND baptism are all tied together in HOW we respond to God's grace and call for us to be saved through His Son.
It's ultimately ONLY GOD'S GRACE and JESUS'S SACRIFICE THAT SAVES...however, God has asked us to respond in a particular manner. He expects us to fear Him (Proverbs 9:10), listen to His word (Rom. 10:17), have trust (faith) in Jesus as our saviour, confess Jesus publicly (Rom. 10:10), repent of our sins (Matthew 4:17), and then be baptized (Acts 8:36).
Baptism for the forgiveness of sins is not a self-righteous work. It is submission to God's will!
My guess is that you believe faith and confession are essential to salvation (responding to God's grace)...why then is baptism such a stretch!?
Just because something is a symbol doesn't mean it isn't essential as an act. Once again, think back to the communion--it's essential because Jesus commanded it!
You are confusing works-salvation with conditions. God clearly gives conditions to people through the entirety of scripture in order for them to have His peace and blessings. Think about Naaman the leper (2 Kings 5)...he was commanded to dip in the Jordan to be cleansed. He complained and would have rather washed in the rivers of his own country because they were cleaner. There was nothing magical about the Jordan water...it's just that GOD CREATED A CONDITION for his leprosy to be cleansed. Likewise, baptism is a condition, along with faith, etc. for when God pours out His grace on us. Just because we have to do something DOESN'T mean we earn salvation.
Let me give you a quick modern day example for an explanation:
      Your uncle dies.
He leaves behind 50,000 dollars to you in his will.
You had no idea...were not expecting such a generous gift! You did NOT EARN this gift...but there ARE some CONDITIONS to RECEIVE the 50k.
First, you have to meet with the lawyer or public notary or whoever so that you can legally accept the transfer of funds.
Then, you have to take the check when it becomes available (after waiting for it to process probably).
Then you have to drive to the bank, stand and line and deposit the check.
You didn't earn the 50k...but THE MONEY WONT MAGICALLY APPEAR IN YOUR ACCOUNT JUST BECAUSE YOUR UNCLE DIES---YOU HAD TO DO SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY RECEIVE THE MONEY!
      Same thing for salvation....for baptism...
      _____
Separately, you actually can be saved and then turn away from God and not be saved any more. You don't "lose" your salvation, but you can certainly FORFEIT your salvation by your own choosing. "Once saved always saved" is NOT IN THE BIBLE!
I will leave you with 1 of 5 or so verses that prove this. Galatians 5:4 speaks for itself.
"You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace."

    • @martin9410

I would have to take exception to one of your points regarding 1 Peter 3:21. You said that baptism was a "part of the process of being BORN AGAIN." This is no where stated as such in the text. In fact, if it did, it would be violating other portions of Scripture. You're failing to understand the breakdown of vs. 21. First understand it was the ark that saved Noah's family, not the water. Secondly, this baptism is called an "antitype," or a "like unto figure." An antitype is a symbol of the real thing. In other words, it's not the baptism that saves but it illustrates or symbolizes that salvation. And just to make sure there was no confusion, Peter adds that it is "not the removal of dirt from the flesh." Of course baptism, whether John's baptism or Jewish ritual baptisms were never a mere bath. Peter is saying that this baptism doesn't wash away dirt(sins) from the flesh (spiritually). You made a good point regarding the Lord's Supper. It is a commandment, but it doesn't have any saving power. And I agree that it is Jesus' blood that saves us.
You said that baptism for forgiveness of sins is not a "self-righteous work." Baptism is because of remission of sins, not for remission of sins. This gets confusing in some of our translations in Acts 2:38. But I would agree that baptism is not a work in one sense, but it could be construed as a work if it is meant to procure our salvation. You said, "My guess is that you believe faith and confession are essential to salvation (responding to God's grace)...why then is baptism such a stretch!?" Actually, salvation is by faith alone. I think where you and a lot of other folks get confused (I used to preach in the Church of Christ, so I understand), is that you want to patch together a plan of salvation from various biblical sources without seeing each book as a complete letter that should be understand in its entirety. I will say more on that in just a moment.
You give the example of Naaman the leper. You can't compare one Old Testament example before the cross that deals with a physical healing with something after the cross that saves the soul. Other than occurring in water, the illustration doesn't pan out. You say that "baptism is a condition, along with faith, etc. for when God pours out His grace on us." This certainly contradicts what Paul and Silas said on the subject as well as what Peter preached in Acts 10. You give a nice lengthy example of the 50,000 dollars. The only problem with the illustration is that you're making the acceptance of that gift in the Christian arena, baptism, instead of faith.
You mentioned that "once saved, always saved is NOT IN THE BIBLE." However, it's everywhere. For instance in John 5:24, Jesus says that those who believe will not be judged and have "already passed from death to life." Of course Jesus knew we would sin tomorrow and afterwards, but He assures us of eternal security. Paul tells us that our salvation is sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption. There are many other passages that say the same thing as well. Jesus and Paul are not in error. It would be an odd thing to think that we're not saved by works, but that we have to keep ourselves saved by works.
Galatians 5:4 is not a verse about salvation, but of fellowship and obedience. The word, "severed," in the Greek means ineffectual or of no effect. The context regarding "you have fallen from grace," is not "fallen from salvation." This verse within its context is addressing the fact that if you're once again entangled by the observance of the Jewish law, you have let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery. Paul goes on to add in vs. 6 that "neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love." Paul then goes on to say that they were "running well, who hindered you..." Then he reminds them in vs. 13, that they were called to "freedom." There are false teachers who are trying to hurt new and immature believer's faith. But Paul never questions their salvation.
The jailer asked Paul and Silas a question in Acts 16: "What must I do to be saved?" This would have provided the perfect time for the Holy Spirit to mention baptism so that all controversy would be averted. Paul and Silas' answer as guided by the Holy Spirit was, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved." They said it was by "faith alone" that one was saved. Now it's true that they did speak more to them about Jesus and eventually baptism, but baptism was in response to this wonderful salvation.
Then you have Peter preaching in Acts 10. When he gets to the part in his message that says "Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. Then later they were baptized after their salvation.
When Peter reports of this event in the next chapter he says, "and he will speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God" Peter didn't mention baptism in his report, but did mention what saves, belief!
When you read John's Gospel, you'll find the reason he wrote his gospel in the end of chapter 20, "Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name." Since John wrote this letter to bring folks to a saving faith in Jesus, you would think baptism would be sprinkled throughout his book but it is not. He never mentions Christian baptism, not even once. He doesn't mention confession, he doesn't mention repentance, but he mentions faith throughout his letter. It is faith that saves. John 3:36, "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 6:28&29, "Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” John 6:40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” And so on it goes throughout the entire book of John.
Even if you consider Acts 2:38, the verse is easily mistranslated. It speaks of "repent and be baptized for (eis) the remission of sins." The Greek word, "eis," which is translated "for" is best translated "because of." So be baptized because of remission of sins. Just like Nineveh repented for the preaching of Jonah. Baptism is in response to one getting saved. I think why people get so confused is because baptism is so directly linked to the salvation experience. It's the first act of obedience once someone is saved. In the book of Acts, baptism happened immediately after one believed in the Lord Jesus unto salvation. And because it was so closely linked, that's why I think people get so confused. There are only a handful of verses, when taken out of context might be construed as teaching that baptism saves a person, against 100s of passages that say that salvation is just by faith. So when this happens, you look at the overwhelming evidence of Scripture and harmonize these few isolated passages to go along with the rest of scripture. For instance, if you were to consider Acts 22:16, the Greek construction goes this way, "arise and be baptized, and have your sins washed away by calling on His Name and being baptized." In the Greek, it's the action of faith that saves and the response is baptism.
Or if you look at another confusing passage, Mark 16:16. It speaks of faith and baptism saving, but then turns around and says that those who don't believe are condemned. It's like saying, "If you have a current driver's license and drive a car, you are legal. If you don't have a current driver's license, you are illegal to drive." In other words, you can still be legal to drive, even if you don't drive the car.
For the most part I've just addressed the passages that you would probably use in your defense. However, there are a host of passages, 100s, that state that salvation is just by faith. We should also look at each and everyone of them, just to be fair. You should also study those 100s of other passages and not just focus on a few. In some churches we're just programmed to look at a part of the bible.

Agreed. To add to your point, the argument of "the thief on the cross wasn't baptized for his salvation" doesn't make sense because Jesus didn't die on the cross at the time, thus the new covenant of salvation revealed in Acts 2:38 didn't apply yet. Jesus had the authority to forgive sins on Earth (Mark 2:10), so He literally could just willy-nilly forgive whoever He wanted. After He died, the Acts 2:38 salvation plan is for all of us ("The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call" - Acts 2:39).

And if you read please the Acts 10 and 13 chapters you will see how Peter himself accepting Salvation by Grace through Faith not of works. He says I THANK GOD I Baptise NONE of You and Paul says,For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. (1 Corinthians 1:17, KJV). Paul in his Epistle Never Ever said be baptise to be Saved. He said believe on the Gospel and be Saved. No works added to Salvation. But what you are saying is adding Works to Salvation. Your Gospel is for Jews. You are Not RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH!!! You are insane if you don't Rightly Divide. As Paul says,"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV). Lord Jesus Christ finished Work on the Cross and HIS Blood Atonement is everything one need to be SAVED No Works in Salvation. Please do yourself a Favor REAd the Whole Acts not some Chapters. Even Peter himself Said in Acts last Chapters. Peter said,"But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. (Acts 15:11, KJV). From someone baptised into the Holy Roman Church created by Jesus the Christ to his own apostle Peter which Paul accepted also as the one the Lord gave authority to be the shepherd on Earth whilst the lord is away. All authority was given to Peter from Jesus who received the authority from God the Father over all things in Heaven and on Earth. Remember that the Lord God has authority over all and anything or anybody he chooses at his will, do not dismiss baptism for even Jesus himself humbled himself to be baptised though he alone did not need to be baptised, or even need to die on the cross for us. So respect and honour the Lord your God by doing his will, not your own perceptions. Yes, you do need to be baptised most certainly. God can do as he pleases, and it is not for us to please ourselves. Having the Holy Spirit is not a a ticket to Heaven, but doing the word of God by honouring his son Jesus. Do as Jesus wants you to do, not what you want to do. If you have the Holy Spirit then the Holy Spirit has blessed you indeed but not given you a free ticket to Heaven. Only by doing Gods will on Earth throughout your whole life can you be saved and it is at the Lord Gods choosing, and not ours. The Holy Spirit comes and Goes at will, like unto the wind. Adam and Eves original sin is what Baptism is about, and every single person on Earth has original sin, except the Lord Jesus. God is the judge and God has made rules through his Holy Roman Church through Jesus to Peter. Do not put yourself before Jesus words to us because he is life, and his word to us remain our. Feed my sheep, feed my lambs. Read and understand Matthew 3: 15,16,17. End

So, any interpretation which comes to the conclusion that baptism, or any other act, is necessary for salvation, is a faulty interpretation. in many other verses Peter expounds Clearly that Jesus Only erases sin.No water can do that.If im on a plane with a person and he accepts Chrsist as his lord and Savior an we crash an die,is he not saved? of course he is without ever being Baptized.Baptism is a commandment done to show others that You do believe in Jesus. when your immersed in Water you die to your old self, and when you come up out of the water ,your raised anew Symbolizing Your Trust in HIM.Read all the other verses with Peter an he says Christ Only takes away sin.,one scripture out of context means nothing.the Focus od the whole bIble is on Jesus who is God!!

Let's see if Dr. Brown can address this. He says that if someone has the Holy Spirit they are saved, correct? Explain this to us then...
Acts 9:17-19, So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; and he took food and was strengthened.
Acts 22:12-16, “A certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law, and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, came to me, and standing near said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very time I looked up at him. And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear an utterance from His mouth. For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard. Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’"
According to Paul, he received laying on of hands from Ananias which meant he was filled with the Holy Spirit as evidenced by regaining his sight. THEN Ananias asks him why he's delaying, to get up and be baptized, and wash away his sins, calling on His name. He still had his sins on him after receiving the Holy Spirit. Why would Cornelius be any different?

First of all Jesus meant that a person is born sorrounded by water in his mothers womb.he was Not talking about baptism here. a Person is saved when he or she accepts Christ, then He is regenerated by the Spirit an then becomes Born Again!! And Thats why Jesus pleaded with many including pharasees to turn to HIM.We must Believe first and then comes the regeneration that DR Brown is talking about! Baptism then should be our next act as a commandment From GOD, So we Die (submersed in water) to our old selves and then raised up out of the water to a new life in the Spirit. However we still are Practical sinners!! it is the Belief in Christ the Savior not in the Water. the Focus is on the Substance which is Christ. When cornelius was saved he was NOT as Yet Baptized!! the Holy Spirit fell on him ,and Peter said -should we now Refuse him the Water .So he got Baptized but was Already Saved!!
PAUL was saved when he acknowledged jesus as Lord an believed before he meant annaais but still went thru the process of getting baptized to show others.the washing away of sins is only in Christ but Baptism only acknowledges your belief.

@@bobfree1226 So Paul, according to you, was saved without having his sins washed away? How do you figure that? And another question, you said to turn to Jesus, which I totally agree with, but why exclude baptism as the thing that turns us to Jesus? We are baptized INTO Christ according to Romans 6:3, that's how we turn to Jesus. Paul was ordered by Ananias to stop delaying, arise be baptized and wash away his sins calling on His name. The verb tenses in Acts 22:16 show that all of those things happen simultaneously. That's turning to Jesus.

The verse you're referring to is in John 3.
Jesus was not talking about water baptism when He said "born of water". He was talking about natural birth.
Jesus repeats Himself in verse 6. But this time He used the word "flesh" instead of water but He still uses the word Spirit.
This passage doesn't mention baptism at all.
Nicodemus would have known what Jesus was talking about if it meant water baptism because Nicodemus was a religious leader of the Jewish people and would have been very familiar with water baptism.

[19] And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. [20] For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. mark 16:16 is quite clear, wonder if the Lord Himself knew what He was talking about. notice john 3 where the Lord speaks about being born of water and the Spirit, to be born again, before the ever famous belief passage, 16th verse of the same chapter. every biblical example of someone becoming a christian is always seen in Scripture to be baptised. its best to submit to the Word of God, as peter says to make our call and election sure, 2 pet 1:10. the cornelius issue had to do with the theology of peter, on whether or not gentiles were part of the new covenant and so with the dream and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, his response is that (he) cant forbid water if God has chosen them to be part of the covenant acts 10: 47- 48. the thief of on the cross is an isolated case when the Lord was still alive He could forgive sin. acts 2:38 as peter is preaching through inspiration of the Holy Spirit asks them to be baptised for the forgiveness of sins. so i'd say baptism is essential to salvation, just as the Lord says in mark 16:16.

I find it odd that so much emphasis is put on baptism for salvation, when we find Paul, the greatest missionary, one who wrote the majority of the New Testament, many times mentioning belief for salvation but not mentioning water baptism. IF it's co-equal to belief in saving a person, then Paul would have been in grave danger of preaching a false gospel by neglecting such an important part of the equation. No, the truth is, water baptism is important, it identifies us with Christ, but it is merely an outward expression of what has ALREADY happened on the inside of a believer. It NEVER precedes belief and ALWAYS follows true belief. It IS NOT required for a person to be saved or declared righteous in God's eyes. Plain and simple. God bless.

The Lion and his lamb I already knew we didn't have the "Original" manuscripts for the Gospels. I'm simply saying there is a 0% chance of those stories being in the original. Why would God inspire the NT, but do such a poor job at preserving it? Why would God inspire Matthew, Mark, Luke and John( Btw those names weren't given to the gospels until the 2nd century, so we're still not sure who even wrote them) to write their gospels the way he wanted, only for the originals to be destroyed, and leave us with copies that scribes have edited and changed, leaving scholars to sort through all these manuscripts and determine which Chapters, verses, and words, were "Most Likely" in the originals, and which ones were done by the hands of scribes. All God had to do was preserve the originals, but he didn't. Doesn't look like he cares to much about his "Word" huh? Btw, the first full manuscript of the NT (Codex Sinaiticus) wasn't written until nearly 300 years after the gospels were written.

The baptism that Jesus baptized people with is his Spirit. John's baptism was a baptism with water for repentance but the baptism of Jesus is the Spirit. When Jesus says in Mark's gospel "whoever believes and is baptized will be saved" that's what he means he means baptized by the Spirit which comes by faith in Jesus. Paul teaches the same thing when he says the "moment we believed we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit who is the guarantor of our inheritance." Water baptism is a washing of renewal for a clear conscience and burial of our old self. It is symbolic of the regeneration work of the Spirit. Circumcision of the heart is done by the Spirit and that is what faith in Jesus does because the believers are transformed through the secret work of the Spirit and water is the outward rebirth. I hope this helps you. Grace and peace to all in Christ.

If you understand all of the purposes/functions of water baptism, you will know instinctively that it is necessary, and that NO ONE can be saved/go to heaven before water baptism.
Here is a partial list of the functions and purposes of water baptism:
    1. God does many things (Divine action): Justifies, sanctifies (1 Cor 6:11), seals (Romans 4:11), applies grace (1 Cor 1:14), absolves sin (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16), etc.
    2. Jesus' blood is spiritually applied to our soul. (Typology-The passover lamb's blood had to not only be shed).
    3. Sins are: remitted (paid for), forgiven, and washed away, for the first time. (Acts 2:38, Lk 24:47; We are “freed from sin” (Rom 6:7). Colossians 2:11 “...putting off the body of the sins”.
    4. Our sins no longer prevent us from entering heaven, and partaking of the Tree of Life (Gal 5:19-21; Rev 21:7-8, 22:14-15; Jn 3:5ff, Col 2:12).
    5. Old Sinful Nature is “cut off” (Eph chapter 2; Col 2:11-12), “old self is crucified”, we are “dead to sin” (Rom 6:2-11), we are “no longer slaves to sin” (1 Cor 15:55-56).
    6. We are baptized into Christ's death. “We died with Christ” (Rom 6:3,6 “baptized into his death”).
    7. We are spiritually circumcised (Eph chapter 2; Col 2:11-12).
    8. Baptism is the beginning of life in Christ (TNDNTT) by Colin Brown Vol. 1, pg 147): We arise to newness of life (Col 2:11-12; Rom 6:4 NIV). We become “alive to God in Christ”.
    9. We get a new godly nature. (Eph chapter 2)
    10. We get a good conscience (1 Pet 3:20-21). (A clean slate, and a new beginning, if-you-will.)
    11. Jesus Christ's name is called upon us (James 2:7).
    12. We are delivered from: Death, Devil, Hell, and perdition (James 5:20; Acts 26:18).
    13. We become a New Creature in Christ (2 Cor 5:17).
    14. We share in Christ's ability to abstain from sin (as Christ after resurrection was immune).
    15. Conversion, Salvation (2 Tim 2:10; Eph 1:3; Acts 2:41), Regeneration, and Atonement happens.
    16. Our status and identity changes. We are: converted, saved, born again (Jn 3:3ff), added to the church (Ac 2:41), a child of God, part of the bride of Christ (Rom 7:4; Rev 21:9; 22:17; 2 Cor 11:2; Mt 25:1-46), we are kings and priests (Rev 1:6), Abraham's seed, heirs, (Gal 3:29), part of the spiritual house (1 Pet 2:5; Eph 2:12), no longer strangers and aliens (Eph 2:19), become Jesus' disciple (Jn 8:31), and Christian.
    17. We enter the: “Kingdom of Heaven” (Jn 3:3ff; Rev 1:6). “Church”, “Body of Christ” (1 Pet 2:10), New Covenant.
    18. We “put on” Christ, and are “put in” Christ (Gal 3:27). We are then, “IN Christ” (Gal 3:27), & “in the faith” (1 Cor 12:27).
    19. In Union With Christ (Rom 6:5). We have fellowship with Christ.
    20. We become His sheep, and “disciple indeed” (Jn 8:31), AND we now hear Jesus' voice.
    21. All Christ's spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3) are now available to us, including the promise of resurrection, and Heaven (Rom 6:5,9; Gal 3:29; Rom 6:1-11).
    22. We get the new privilege of being able to daily repent, and get forgiven (1 Jn 1:9).
    23. We get a change of Lordship, and ownership 1 Cor 6:20; 7:23; 1 Pet 2:9)(we become a portable, purchased, treasure).

I would say that 90% of your Scriptural verses are taken out of context and don't relate to water baptism at all. I don't have the time or the patience to address each and every one of your references, but pick 3 or 4 of your best ones and I'll be happy to respond to those. Just throwing out multiple verses doesn't impress when they don't apply to the discussion.

I respectfully disagree with your assertion that 90% have no application to water baptism. I have read your suggestion for me to pick 3 or 4 verses , etc. Since you have already let me know that you disregard most of my references, there is a high possibility that the verses I choose, will be among those which you disregard. That being the case, allow me to choose a different approach. Why don't you tell me the 10% of verses which are relative to/ and or applicable to water baptism, and we can discuss those. This will maximize our chances of approaching the selected verses from a point of agreement.

My comments were out of a bit of weariness. I've answered biblically your arguments on so many different sites and was just a bit tired to go through them all again. But my experience has been, just from an observational perspective that those that carry such titles in their name as, "The Gospel Messenger," or "Truth Bearer," etc. are perceiving themselves as the carrier of truth and seldom are moved to change, even when shown biblically to be incorrect. And I certainly don't disregard your references. I believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God. I just believe that your references have been misinterpreted and misrepresented. It's some of the meanings you attach to them, not the references themselves that I disagree with. Since you are the one that brought up the various points, I'm happy to address them 3 or 4 at a time until we go through all of them. I just don't want to write a book in one comment.
When I was a minster in the church of Christ, I, in fact, used many of your arguments. I spent over twenty years preaching most of your arguments. So, I certainly understand where you're coming from. I also know there are examples in the New Testament (after the church was established) where some were saved prior to baptism.
I'm also aware I shouldn't have responded in the first place because I know where this always leads. Each combatant is more entrenched in their own dogma. Nothing is accomplished, nothing achieved. We will just respond with comment after comment and no one is moved, no one is changed. So perhaps the areas where we can both agree on is that baptism is commanded of every believer and it should take place immediately after one believes. This is proven over and over again in the Book of Acts. So we will just leave it in our mutual areas of agreement.

A V Actually we are commanded to do it to be forgiven of sins. It’s not a showing of our faith. Baptism IS essential for salvation. It can’t get any more clear than what the Bible says. But false teachers have taught a lie for so long people have believed it. This was also spoken of in the Bible. God gave them over to a powerful delusion. Sadly many are living under the delusion that you don’t have to baptized. That’s a flat out lie. I’m gonna trust what the Bible says and not men. My eternal soul is on the line. I am responsible for it.

      A little story for you.
In the second chapter of Acts, Peter had convicted the people there of having killed the Son of God. In verse 37 their question was, "Men and brethren what shall we do?" In verse 38 (KJV), "Then Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins." Here people were told to repent and be baptized for the remission of their sins. Only when we submit to baptism as the Lord has commanded, that is for the remission of sins to be saved, do we show our faith in the Lord. Only then will He save us.
Man today has a sin problem. It is our sins that separate us from God. We are to repent and be baptized for the remission of our sins. This is God's instruction on how we solve our sin problem. In the above verse, when Peter told them to "Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins," whatever repentance is for in that verse, baptism is for the same reason. Repent and be baptized are joined by the coordinating conjunction and, which joins words of equal grammatical importance. Certainly Acts 2:38 does not teach that lost people are to repent because they have already received forgiveness of their sins. Neither does it teach that lost people are to be baptized because their sins are already forgiven. Satan would like you to believe that baptism has nothing to do with the forgiveness of your sins. Have you been baptized for the remission of your sins? Again, the choice is yours; either believe what God has said and be saved, or believe what men say and you will continue to be lost. We only have two choices, and the choice that we make will have eternal consequences. But please make the right choice.
In the book of Acts we have the account of the conversion of the Apostle Paul. In Acts chapter 9, Paul is traveling on the road up to Damascus to persecute Christians. The Lord appears to Paul on the road and strikes him blind. In verse 5 he tells Paul, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting." In verse 6 Paul asks, "Lord what do you want me to do? Then the Lord said to him (Paul), Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." The Lord did not tell Paul what he must do, but that someone in the city would tell him what he must do. In Acts 9:9, after Paul went into the city, "And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank." Paul was worried sick and very upset. He had just found out that all the years in his zeal, while persecuting the Lord's church, he had actually been persecuting the Lord. Paul was devastated and broken-hearted in finding out that he had been wrong all these years.Let's see now what Paul was told what he must do. In Acts chapter 22, a man named Ananias, who was sent by the Lord, came to Paul and miraculously restored Paul's eyesight. Notice what Paul was told by Ananias what he must do. Acts 22:16, "And now why are you waiting? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Paul was not saved three days earlier while on the road to Damascus, as some people would like for us to believe. Paul up to this point was still lost, because he still had all his sins that needed to be washed away. Paul still had a sin problem. Obedience to the Lord's command to be baptized was necessary to wash away Paul's sins. At the point of baptism every sin that we have ever committed will be taken away, if it is done for that purpose. Have you been baptized for the purpose of having your sins washed away? If you have not, then you still have a sin problem. You are still lost.
Paul was not told "to pray the sinner’s prayer and ask Jesus to come into his heart in order to be saved." This is foreign to the scripture. You cannot find anywhere in the Bible where anyone was ever told to do this. Since God in the Bible has never told anyone "To pray and ask Jesus to come into your heart in order to be saved", who else but men could have come up with such an idea? Forgiveness occurs in the mind of God and not on the basis of man's feeling in his heart. Only when we have done what God has said that we must do, will God forgive our sins. We cannot devise our own plan as to how our sins are to be forgiven.
Do not misunderstand. We do not "earn" our salvation by being baptized. Salvation is a gift from God. Even though salvation is a free gift from God, he has laid down certain conditions upon which he will give it. One condition to receive his gift is faith: Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith it is impossible to please Him." Another condition of his free gift is repentance: Luke 13:3, "Unless you repent you will all likewise perish." Another condition is baptism: Mark 16:16, "He who believes and is baptized will be saved." Still another condition is living a faithful Christian life: Revelation 2:10, "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." The conditions include doing all "the will of the Father," Matthew 7:21. These are God's conditions. Believing in God and Christ with all our heart, repenting of all our sins, confessing Christ and being baptized are all equally important to our salvation. If any of these are lacking, then we will not be saved. You can't have one without the others.
There is nothing that we can do to merit salvation. Whether it be believing in Jesus or being baptized, we can never "earn our salvation". The only way we can show our faith in Christ is if we are willing to accept and obey what He says. But it is in baptism that God has chosen to impart his wonderful grace of salvation to us as a willing believer.
According to the Bible, it is at the point of baptism that we pass from an unsaved state into a saved state. In other words, at the time of baptism, we go from being unsaved to being saved. We read in I Peter 3:21 (KJV), "The like figure whereunto even baptism does also now save us." The Bible says that "baptism does now also save us," but men say that "baptism does not save us." This is very similar to the situation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God in Genesis 2:17 told them not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, "For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." But Satan told Eve in Genesis 3:4, "Then the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die." Satan only added the one word "not" to what God had said and completely changed the meaning. That is what men are doing to God's commands today. Who are you going to accept, the word of men or the Word of God? We are told in Acts 5:29, "We ought to obey God rather than men." On the Day of Judgment, the Bible will still say that "baptism does also now save us." Again the choice is yours, but it is very serious. We dare not make the wrong choice.

This is a great video. I disagree with most of it, but it is well done. The main point I want to refute is Dr Brown's argument of Acts 10. He suggests that the Gentile believers received the Holy Spirit (as in salvation) prior to baptism and this simply is not true. It is true that the Holy Spirit gave the Gentile believers the ability to speak in tongues prior to salvation, but that was to make God's point of showing that Gentiles were just as acceptable to HIm in His Kingdom as were the Jews and thus candidates for baptism, at which time, they received the "seal" of the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13). Dr Brown, as to many others, confuse the gift 'from' the Holy Spirit, with the gift 'of' the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38, Eph 1:13, 2Cor 1:22). The grammar in the case of Acts 10 is called metonymy, where the thing mentioned (in this case a gift from the Spirit) is indicated by the use of the word itself, i.e. Spirit. Peter specifically says, "Surely no one can refuse water for these to be baptized who have received the Spirit just as we did, can he?" How did the Apostles receive the Spirit on the day of Pentecost? The received (from the Spirit) the gift of tongues! Peter is saying, "look at these Gentiles, they have received tongues (the Spirit) just as we did. How can anyone refuse their baptism so they too can be saved and receive the gift OF the Holy Spirit?" (Acts 2:38) Peter doubted the God would allow him to eat forbidden foods. God sent him a dream AND God sent him evidence that Gentiles were also acceptable to receive the seal of the Spirit, by first sending them a gift FROM the Spirit.
Please note: My entire point here was to disagree with Dr Brown's use of Acts 10. There has been a ton of scholarly information written on this topic from both perspectives. I am sticking to this single point, however.

It is true that those who have repented and excepted Christ in their hearts, but have no way of being baptized, are saved. But those who do have time and are able to be baptized, must be baptized, because "faith without works is dead." James 2:14-24
It's about obedience, It has always been about obedience. Ever since Adam and Eve, it's been about obedience.
    Matt 28:19 v. Acts 2:38
Jesus said to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Peter filled with the Holy Spirit said to baptize in the name of Jesus. How can we make these two verses say the same thing?
The name "Jesus", Yeshuah, Means Jehovah is salvation, or Jehovah saves. So the saving name of Yahweh is Yeshuah or Jesus.
Isaiah 43:11 "I, even I, am the Lord
    He gave this name to His Son;
Hebrews 1:4 "Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
Matt. 1:21 "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins."
    So God provided a sacrifice for our sins. that's why it says;
    Then Jesus said;
John 14:26 "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
So the name of the Father, and the Son is Jesus. The Holy Spirit come to us in the authority of the name of Jesus. Jesus gave a command, Matt 28:19, Peter, in Acts 3:28 knew, by revelation of the Holy Spirit , what that name was.
    Why is this important?
Acts 4:12 "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

You know nothing about his life or his history to claim he was not Baptized. 3rd, Jesus ALONE could save ANYONE of his choosing. So, The Thief on the Cross is a not even a real qualified Argument.

You need to be baptised under the water to be saved. It's clearly in romans 6 5 likeness of His death is like the way Christ died. In a tomb and rose. We baptised you under the water to repeat that likeness of His death. If a person believes God? Do you believe also in his word and what the words he left for us? 5)ere it is. If we have been planted and then there will be a good result at the end of life, otherwise will we say at the end that that verse doesn't count.

There is no water in Romans 6. There are about 12 different Baptisms in the bible.
The Jewish long time observance of Baptism (cleansing/washing) is not necessary for us today. Paul is where we get our doctrine to live by. Jesus had him write, that it is not part of his(Paul's) gospel message.
1Cor 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
There is only one Baptism today and it is performed by the Spirit once we believe and trust the gospel: that Jesus died was buried and rose for the forgiveness of our sins.
1Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
compare this verse with these 2 verses:
      Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
One is a number, there is no interpretation needed.
Being saved is when you believe the right gospel message Jesus gave to Paul for us. That is: believe and trust that Jesus died on the cross, was buried and rose from the dead. Believe and trust this plus nothing gets you saved and eternal life that cannot be taken away by any means, because it is a gift by God's grace.
      I Cor 15:1-4, Eph 2:8-9, Titus 3:-5-6.

If you were able to make the judgement then when you got baptized on your own and you knew what you were getting into, you don't need to do it again no matter what. You only do this once and from now on, do your best to not be lukewarm. God Bless You and I wish you to stay strong as our Lord is at the door and about to take us home! :)
Don't forget though, you also need to seek out the baptism of the Spirit as well, both are very important.

Jesus commanded that disciples be made in baptism. Matthew 28: 18-20. Need to obey Christ. Acts 2: 38-41. Get sins forgiven and receive holy spirit. Romans 6: 3-4. Baptism is part of responding to the cross of Christ and for the salvation process.

Jesus is coming so soon, don’t ignore the signs.
Believe in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, (He’s God in human form), trust ONLY in His sacrifice (not in how ‘good’ you are) to be saved from hell, and ask God for forgiveness of your sins. If you do all of this and truly mean it you will become ‘born-again’ meaning you will love what is right and hate what is evil and you will repent of your sins which only God can help you do (repent means to be sorry for your sins and stop doing them)
Even after this sometimes we can fall into sin and we just need to ask God for forgiveness and be truly sorry but we must do this all of the time to be ready for Jesus’ second coming or for unexpected death and produce fruit by showing you are sorry by not sinning.
The reason I say this is that some people have had experiences of hell and seen ‘Christians’ there because they did not repent, but instead believed and lived in sin. Here are some videos that show this: ‘He saw millions of Christians in hell’ and ‘I saw Jesus and was terrified’ both talk about how we need to constantly repent

I can't call what I have read in all the different comments but the people who believe baptism is essential I believe our correct I'm 72 years old and been struggling and studying since 1980 early 80 May 18th of 80 to be precise I cannot believe people will say this one such person says well the word baptism isn't even in the Greek you're correct it is baptizo which means to immerse I will tell you this to you and anybody else take this to heart is mentioned twice once and sounds and either Proverbs or Ecclesiastes one of the two straight and narrow is the gate and few few few it only says few wants I'm emphasizing few which means not many are they that find it think about that that is one of the most telling passages I've ever read few are they that find it if you don't mean thousands

Think those who think Like that do-guess christian-baptism is a Christian ritual-it is not like taking bath ect,or just immersing oneself in some waters-I am not a Christian am not baptized so possibly this question is unapplicable-think those who like John the Baptist more can also answer for Christians possibly☹️

My mother and I have been having this discussion for so long. We also go back and forth about John 3:5 in which Jesus says "Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." I never hear this verse addressed though. What does this mean?

"Born of water" refers to a fleshly human birth from the womb not baptism

@Joan Diaz Caba That makes sense to mean, Joan. But I wonder what happens to those who come to Jesus on their death bed, for example, and don't have the opportunity to get baptized before they pass? Or what about a person who is bed-bound and cannot be physically immersed in water? Would sprinkling suffice at that point even though we don't see that presented in the Word?

@Joan Diaz Caba Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'm happy to say I have been baptized (full immersion, no sprinkling). I too think it's really important that we obey the commands of the Lord in all things, and certainly in baptism. Nice hearing from you, I appreciate your insight.
