I think these characters look great. Reminds me of the portraits from Fallout 1&2. Whenever I hear Star Control I think of an old indie games review show called Bytejacker, because they would ask what games people thought were the best in a given category, say music, story etc and they would show recorded responses that people sent in. Every time, there was one guy who would say Star Control 2, and his segments became a much enjoyed staple of the show.
My step dad bought this for me when i was 8 in 1997. It was new then. To this day, nothing compares. I still play AOE2, Warcraft 2, Command and Conquer, Morrowind, etc... so this era of games is clearly my favorite. That being said maybe it's my love for the game but i couldnt imagine disliking this game at all.
Hi Matt! I really believe that this was the best era of gaming, I have a deep love of Escape Velocity, as well as loving WC2, AOE, (In 2 Britain is totally busted) and Command and Conquer. :) Awesome games all!
@@TokeyTheBear_AOE We are going to have to act... If we want to live in a different world... ^^ They're amazing nowadays we do see a few decent ones here and there but nothing as iconic as C&C or Warcraft 2. I mean Starcraft II had a GREAT ost, but like only for the Terrans XD
@ChanWalrus Oh man I agree. The menu song for AOE2, every song in WC2 and everything in C&C are SO good. Sometimes I listen to them when I'm driving at work. Another sleeper pick is Far Cry 5, the fiddle/banjo parts are so good. Morrowind OST is a masterpiece too. Rust has some perfectly fitting ambient music as well.
That's the bugs which infuriate you? 😏 I don't remember your bug of having to wait for ships to notice you so either I didn't have it either I had it but I didn't mind it that much because this game has FAR WORSE bugs that you didn't even mention! 😅 By the way, you are aware that you can move yourself in the vicinity of ships for them to take notice of you, right? 😏 You mentioned bad programing in battles but you didn't mention THE most infuriating bug during battles which is planets suddenly spawning from nowhere right in front of your ship and you can't avoid colliding with them because of the suddenness of the spawning, that's how I lost most of my ships not to enemy ships but to teleporting planets. 😅 Indeed, Legend Entertainment added planets into Star Control 3's battle fields, which would be cool if they didn't screw up programing and caused a bug which makes planets teleport in front of your ship in 3D mode! 😫 There at 2:49, it happened to you too right in your video and you didn't even mention it as a frustrating bug! You have to play in 2D mode to get rid of this infuriating bug which destroys your ships. And about "the most infuriating in game bug", I assure you it is not having to wait for ships to notice you, far from it, because the last time I played this game, I didn't complete my adventure because I experienced a GAME BREAKING BUG which broke my game and made me rage quit! 🤬 Indeed, you need the Doogs to give you an anti-matter container and they give it to you when you talk to them after having bought one of their colonies HOWEVER if you first buy all of their colonies before talking to them then the dialogue in which they give you the anti-matter container doesn't trigger anymore and you are screwed because you can no more complete the game and if you didn't notice that they didn't give you the anti-matter container and kept playing and overwriting your saves until the last moment when you need the anti-matter container and only now notice that you miss it and you have no more save from before you bought all Doogs colonies then you are royally screwed, which is what happened to me the last time I played this game. 😫 THIS is an INFURIATING BUG! Your comment about the colonization gameplay which "feels like it is only 25% of what it was intended to be" reminds me of Unreal 2: The Awakening also from Legend Entertainment which was intended to be a Mass Effect before even the first Mass Effect came out. 😏 While you praise the 3D stars map, I hated it because it is so confusing, names over names and stars hidden behind front stars, it lacks clarity! Instead of removing the colonization mechanic, I think they should have made it more useful and fun. But THE reason which made everyone spit on Star Control 3 is the appalling mechanical puppets which disappointed everyone after Star Control 2's appealing hand-drawn characters just like everyone hated Mass Effect Andromeda because of its appalling characters who disappointed everyone after Mass Effect Trilogy's appealing characters.
I experienced continuity errors toward the end although they didn't break the game, just my immersion in it. Those errors told me that Activision had thrown an unfinished game to the market and charged me full price for it.
@@zimriel Accolade, not Activision. 😉 But the same can be told of all AAA games because AAA games are made for maximum shareholders' profits above all else. 😏
While I understand why you think Ur-Quan dreadnoughts are too powerful and unbalance the game, the inclusion of the Ur-Quan into the League of Sentient Species is actually one of my favorite points of this game because I enjoy former enemies becoming friends and the Ur-Quan are so central in Star Control 2 that I wouldn't have enjoyed a sequel without them. 😒 Actually, you claimed that "taking out the Ur-Quan would have made for a better story" but your point to support this claim concerns only gameplay. 😏
Please remember, the Ur-Quan do absolutely nothing in the story. The only event they get is losing all the other colonies at the start of the Crux War, and then they stop building Dreadnoughts, that's it. They're self isolated. Every other race has at least an interaction with another race in their stroyline.
It just didn't feel as well written. Also I could never quite get behind the animated puppets. There was not a lot of "realism" in the original painted pixel art characters, but somehow they came across as more believable IMO. SC3 seems to have tried too hard to hit better "realism" and missed the mark by a mile. It felt like it only underlined the fact that the characters were not and could not possibly be real.
when i first played this game i didn't understand english at all so it was just clicking nales and doing stuff at random, i was like 14 at the time and the game was pretty old by then but still i loved to play it because it was different than anything else. i ddn't even know it had prequels :P
@@ChanWalrus Unfortunately that wasn't going to happen; Activision froze out Paul and Fred, instead tagging Legend to do it and enforcing a budget. It's got a lot of good ideas, whilst it's kinda hard to like as a star control game, it's not as terrible as people have made out.
@Chan Walrus Definitely! Its very interesting, I've been wanting to record better clips of the races than the ones already on RUclips.
