  • Welcome back to Lodge Life!
A vlog series based in Rivers Inlet, British Columbia, Canada about my life here as the chef at Good Hope Cannery, a private Wilderness/Fishing Lodge.
These past couple weeks have been productive for everyone. More staff are arriving and some returning from days off. There's plenty to keep us busy all day but we are also finding time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We've heard some whales in the distance but I havnt spotted any yet.
Update on the marten: We finally caught our last kitchen dweller and none have been in the Hilton for weeks now. We have now started catching mice and wondering if the marten removal directly affected the sudden increase.
All my new purchases arrived in the mail and I unboxed them all with Eve and Chelsey. It's so nice having other girls up here who I have so much in common with. It's good to have a mix, my first month up here was just 6 guys and it was fine... they are all very good guys but I missed my female companionship.
Im sorry to all the Canucks fans.. that's all I have to say about that.
    go oilers
Tony and another new staff member will be arriving in just a few days and these days are flying by! Soon enough I'll be taking my 3 weeks off!
Thank you all so much for watching and supporting this channel. I appreciate you all so much!
    Take care until next time!

I spent a summer up there in 1986 on a gillnetter ( from the lower-mainland BC ) Dawsons Landing 5 buck a pound bacon back then . Saw your lodge & our net got snagged just off Bull Island as we got the horns . The place touches you deep inside & the feeling never goes away & it is hard to explain to those who have never been there .

Ok, another great video thank you. I saw my old boat (sold it to Rob) at the far right end of the dock as you were coming in. It spent a few years between Cape Caution & Klemtu. Thank you for another really great video. You talked about Darby Chanel, it was named in honor of a Doctor who served the coast from his boat, I believe it was in the 1930's or 1940's. I have a friend living in port hardy who is named after Dr Darby, (Darby Gildersleeve). There is a lot of history in the central coast, my friend Gayle M Goertzen wrote a book called "A Boat To Take You There" that gets into some of the history, interesting read. I really enjoy your videos, you guys are making more great history for Rivers Inlet.

I had very mixed feelings about the octopus as one of my favorite award winning documentary is My Octopus Teacher. As you said , how intelligent they are, as many foods we eat are. Your videos bring a lot of personal memories of coastal boating.

Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your story! It was though seeing the octopus in a bag instead of living its best life in the ocean. It’s not something we do often but the prawn boats seem to catch quite a few in their traps which is very sad. Hopefully it’s not taking too many from the ocean. They are spectacular creatures!! I just love your night time time lapse exposures. They are way cool. And the way you handled that Cephalopod was awesome. My partner and I caught one in our commercial prawn pots. Actually, it was sitting on top of the trap as we were pulling up the string of gear. Inside the first trap there was a piece of Octopus leg on the bait hook and we were scratching our heads thinking that was weird because we did not use that as bait. Second pot came up and there he was sitting on top of the trap sulking. Then it jumped off and stuck itself to the side and bottom of the boat.
It took some effort to get it into the boat and then it started climbing the cabin wall. Cooking it was another disaster. We pounded it and fried it . All I remember was it like eating rubber! Those were the days before youtube and you could watch someone like yourself and learn how to cook it properly. Cheers.

As I take in the scenery in your vids, I remain in awe. It's such a beautiful location, remote, but yet connected. The potential topics for vids seem endless - from the cannery itself to the history of the Inlet, the others who make their home/living there, your co-workers (the visit to the water supply & gens with Christian was great!), that promised trip to the loft exercise room, the decaying canneries, and so much more. So many topics there that some restraint is needed! I did have a look online for documentaries - didn't find much, though a NFB doc from the 60's was interesting. What a beautiful place to spend part of the year at! Incredible.

I drove through the Florida Keys, to Key West, some 48 years ago. I was very impressed how unique and beautiful it was then - hope it still remains as such!

After I watch the octopus teacher, I wouldn’t eat it anymore. I live in Hawaii for over 20 years and I’ve eaten many octopus. Of course there we call it tako which is Japanese for octopus.

      @jenny_adrift  3 месяца назад

Absolutely understandable!! I loved that movie! I felt sad when I first saw the octopus but since it was already dead I wanted to give it a try. I could never kill one myself unless it was for my survival. They truly are beautiful and fascinating creatures!

I think it could be good deep fried. Maybe the smaller octopus. I want to try to braise it and see if it would get softer. Thanks for watching!

It is a beautiful place to live! I love my room so much! It’s not for everyone but I love the space and the bunk bed. Feeling like I’m sleeping in a little cave. We are very lucky to have such clean warm rooms. Ive been living in an RV all winter so it feels similar to that.

It can get very rough in the winter up here! I havnt been around to see it myself but I e heard some stories from the winter watchman. Last years snow was so bad that Ted had to come up to help clear it.
