I have a Chevy Volt, and so does my wife. This car is currently the best compromise. We do buy gasoline, but about a tenth the amount of a fully gasoline powered car. Mine has a lifetime gasoline consumption equivalent to 240 miles per gallon. There is no "range anxiety," because after 40 miles of continuous fully electric driving, the gas engine starts. This car is cheap on the used market too, because people don't understand what a superb vehicle it is.
I didn't have a clue until i saw someone suggest it....i was trying to see if a nissan leaf was in my range, so to speak, and stumbled on the volt forums...bought one used for under $15k and under 18,000 miles and haven't looked back. 10 months in and it forced me to burn off the gas carmax had put in and now i'm doing a $5 challenge...how far can $5 in gas get you in a year with normal charging options.
Chris Sullivan - that’s how long it took me to burn of the dealers gas. That’s driving around a couple of days on gas only because they delivered the car with a depleted battery.
@@toddbenfield6546 my first was a 2013 bought in 2016 with 17K miles for 14998 from carmax. a deer smashed it and i was lucky last year and got a 2017 with leather and heated steering wheel and 40K miles for..$14998. Both came with full tanks and dead batteries...i'm still burning off the gas in th 2017. The 2014 did 25K miles on the original 10 gallons i had to burn off and 14 gallons i put in (couple of 6 gallon long trips with no recharging stations) I would run with 2 gallons in the tank and then put in another gallon when the "your gas is stale' message came on. worked pretty well seriously, chevy missed the marketing for a fantastic car. probably their best non-vette car ever.
1) The window down feature needs to be disabled by the dealer. You only think it is cool until one morning you go out only to find all your windows down because you sat on your key fob in your pocket, and it has been raining, or snowing all night. That is the one feature I hated. I had it disabled by my selling dealer, and then one time during routine service they updated the computers, and that feature was turned back on unbeknownst to me. I went to go out one morning, and there was a foot of snow throughout the interior of the car. 2) you don't have to remove the mat from the top cubby, just place the fob inside there. Also if the battery is starting to fail, just open the battery hatch on the fob, remove and reinsert the battery and it will work a few more times until you get a new battery. 3) Right storage compartment in the back is a great place to mount a 2 way radio transceiver Never had a car with a glovebox light. FYI the cabin air filter is up behind the glove box. The car doesn't come with an cabin air filter, but the box is there in the event you want to put one in. All modern cars will let you turn the radio on. My work truck is a Ford transit 150, and I can press the power button on the radio and turn it on for 15 minutes at a time with no key. Here's one for you. When going down a steep hill and cruise control is on, shifting to L will hold you at the set speed without touching your brakes.
Have to agree. That all windows roll down feature is not "pretty cool" when you don't know it's happened. Because of the design of the remote, It's very easy to trigger that and not know it..until you come out and there's a 1/2 inch of rainwater in your floorboards. :(
Never had mine roll windows down on accident, but I also keep the fob on a lanyard not in my pocket. Did not know about the downhill cc/low feature, very cool.

Josh - thanks for pointing out some interesting and useful things! Love the Volt! Great car - the best approach there is today for an electric car that has no range anxiety issues!! Can be owned by city dwellers with no garage charging options. Note: Glove box light - not "something to think about". Such a minor nothing. GM engineers might have purposefully not put one in to have fewer electric drainage points in the car. Everyone's phones have flashlights if needed. Just not a big or small deal. If someone does not buy the car for that reason, then they have much larger problems than a lack of light in their glove box.
I have been driving my 2017 Volt for almost 3 years and i did not know there was a compartment for the key FOB. Got gas about 4 times so far. Most satisfying car to drive i ever had, compared to the Mercedes and Lexus i drove before. I use sports mode all the time. It does not take away any noticeable range since you use the extra power only 5% of the time, but good to have it when you step on the pedal. Main complaint is the chasis is too low and is very easy to hit a speed bump damaging the car underneath. My car sustained considerable damage due to a major bump 2 months ago and the range has decreased 25%. After i get it repaired i will get some bigger shocks or fat tires to raise the car a couple of inches. I dont need the car so low to the ground.

I am surprised you didn't mention the hidden panel in the floor underneath the front passenger seat carpet. There is basically a hole in the floor and it is also an alternate location for the vehicle's VIN number, but it also acts as a great little hiding spot that nobody will ever think to look there. I used to own a 2011 Chevy Volt car number 84. It was one of the first 100 Chevy Volts to roll off the assembly line. I was gifted a Flip video camcorder for being of the first 100 Volt customers, it was a great car and in the 3 years I owned the car I only used 55 gallons of gas, had only 1 oil change, and never gave me an ounce of trouble. In fact I rarely used gas driving the Volt, that periodically the gas generator would kick on and run for 10 minutes to burn off any stale gas in the fuel lines.

Pay no attention to the unpleasant or attempted-shaming comments by little tiny people on here. Good effort and thanks for the heads-up. Your initiative means good things for the future! But you need to get skills. Try these: (1) for public speaking or a presentation, write a script, buff it up and stick to it. Saying "pretty cool" once in a presentation is plenty; you don't need 20 times. We know you think these features are cool because that's the start of your narration--you don't need to remind us of that--it becomes fluff or padding and reduces your credibility and the appearance of competence. Extra credit: use the same terms for car parts and features as GM does in its owner manual. That will help the viewer remember them, and also make you sound like a pro. Good luck!
I think most of the comments here aren't meant to be unpleasant or shaming, just some gentle kidding. If you're going to post something for the general public, you can't be so thin-skinned that you can't take a few jokes. That being said, it's a good opportunity for learning. If you were doing a report, you'd want to read the finished report to catch errors or style problems. (Even better, have a friend read it). The same applies to video. Watch it yourself a couple of times to see if there are any glaring problems (again, even better if to get a friend review it).
2:25 what you didn't know that list of numbers is the parts list/options list of the car. Or RPO plus it has the paint code on the bottom right hand side.
Kinda belated... But two more things to add to your list : There is a spot for a cabin air filter behind the glove box (takes the same one as the Buick lacrosse) and if the car is on and you pop the hood it will turn on the gas engine for some reason. Thanks for sharing!
The engine starting when you open the hood is for maintenance. For instance after you change the oil, you'll want to run the engine then check the oil level again. Or if someone says the engine is making a noise, you can run the engine without having to drain down the battery first.
@@DrinkWhiskeyRaiseHell show me im wrong. Its for safety. If you have the car in a closed garage, and it didn't have this feature- and you left the car on- it would run the battery down and then kick on the gas engine, emitting potentially deadly exhaust gases without anyone realizing it. This is why its programmed to to start engine. Similar to why horn beeps when you walk away with fob while car is on.
@@AZsmoothrider for the car to start up right away in the garage, when you left it on, you would have to intentionally open the hood everytime you park it in the garage the safety feature of the engine running whenever the hood is open is necessary because the car CAN start the engine randomly for a couple of reasons, even when the battery is fully charged. Making the engine start everytime the hood is open and the car is ON keeps you from getting hurt if you decide to change the serpentine belt, or the spark plugs, or change the oil (draining it and having the engine start up would be bad....) IF you intentionally want to look under the hood while the car is on, with the engine OFF, hold the start button without stepping on the brake, for several seconds. This allows you to probe voltages in the fuse box, listen to pumps running, and check for other issues with the ignition ON but the motor off.
There's probably a safety and liability issue why they didn't include a remote window up function. Just one lawsuit because a kid's hand got caught in the window going up...
Another COOL thing I thought was pretty COOL was this COOL thing. Its so COOL. I mean, ya know, its pretty COOL, cuz I didnt know that it was so COOL. Also, I think its COOL that i don't know any other adjectives besides the COOL word, "COOL!" COOL, thanks for being COOL enough to watch my COOL video. COOL! 🤭
After watching the video and reading all of the comments I can see that nobody mentioned the hidden diagnostic mode. You can make the Volt (my Volt is a 2011) go into diagnostic mode by pushing the start button and holding it down without pressing the brake pedal.
That it was weird that my 2014 Volt did not come with a cabin AC filter, given there is a place to install one. Just installed one, thinking it needed replacement.
The auto window rollown feature is NOT good. I want my car windows up and to not worry about them coming down when I bend over to tie my shoes with my key in my pocket (which has happened several times and left my car OPEN). Otherwise… i appreciate your review. Good job. LOVE THE VOLTS!!!
I've had a 2018 since new and have not installed a level 2 at home. Most days for me overnight on the included level 1 cord is enough. If battery is close to depleted and I have an earlier start the next day then I can bump up the power draw from 8 to 12 amps which will give me nearly a full charge (75 to 85 km range) in about 8 hours. I haven't done the math so the numbers are an estimate.
I know this is an old post but don’t buy a Siemens charger. Also, the charge cable that comes with the car is actually capable of Level 2. Read up on it. Maybe that is only for Gen 2 Volt - which I have.
Hi Josh great program they are nice cars. I had no luck with mine. I purchsed a used chevy volt 2013 drove it less than 50 miles where al of a sudden all power went off. I was doing 70 on th freeway and it took everything not to get in an accident. Everything went out. Took it to a hybred mechanic and he diagnosed main battery. I wanted a second opinion so I took it to Chevorlet dealer where they confirmed two cells were bad on the main battery. To fix by dealers its $26000 for the battery and about $3000 for the labor and coolant. I paid $6000 for the car with 111000 thousand miles. I could not justify this cost. I searched for a used Chevy volt battery but it was $7000 with NO GUARANTEES. Plus $3000 for collant and labor. So ten thousand dollars. I donated the car. took a loss of $6000 plus $500 for dealer . Incredible the Toyota Prius or Honda Hybred do not have this high cost. Used hybred for Prius with atwo year guarantee is only 1700 dollars and less than 500 to install. Its sad to see Chevrolet our American made car has designed a program to lock the car out with just two dead cells. Bad enginnering. Be well. Jack
@@rsewill12 I paid $8300. I found since then several people have had this issue. One had all pwer off on a street. The problem is not even that the problem is 28000 for a battery and about 2000 for instal my chevrolet.
the light in the glove compartment has an issue, that has caused trouble for decades if something in the glove compartment keeps it from closing properly, the little 5 watt light bulb will drain the car battery dead in several days. You would never notice the light is staying on when the glove compartment is closed, till you take a long trip and leave your car at the airport... or parked at home for a few weeks, and when you come back the battery is totally dead.... Usually you come back on the last flight in at 1AM, and there is no one around for miles....
The numbers you seen in the hideaway panel are for your trim of your car and the Paint code if you ever get your car painted You need that for the exact match of the paint If you over inflate your tires a few PSI you will gain extra miles .3 mile per Psi per tire Good for dry roads not good for Snow/ice rain or old worn tires ..or extreme over inflation
I’m always finding the windows down for seemingly no reason so I kinda hate that feature. I also can’t get the feature to work where you can start the AC while it is charging.
That first thing about the remote rolling down the windows is my absolute least favorite thing about any car ever... I live somewhere where it rains most of the year, and so that "feature" is absolutely horrible...

Yeah all the windows go down, keep that key in your pocket and sometimes you come to your car and you see all the windows down. This functionality sucks ass.
Any Volt owner knows these things, they arent secrets. You should have added turning up and down the swoosh sounds at startup or how to power the house through the rear terminals. Or that if you run out of gas and electric there is a 5 mile backup reserve.
I’ve hated everything that came from Detroit for years- including Motown music- but I really like what I’ve seen of the Chevy volt. I’d love to have one!
That’s a bug, not a feature … rolling the windows down when unlock button held down for more than three seconds. That has happened many times without my knowing it when I’ve left the key in my pocket. One cold morning I came out to find all the windows rolled down and the inside of the car full of snow! There is no way to disable this so-called feature. Luckily, I am able now to park my Volt in a garage so no harm done when all the windows roll down by themselves. Before that, I was tempted to modify the key so the unlock button no longer worked.
get a nail about 2 inches long get a hammer pound the nail into the wall right by your front door, about half way when you enter your house put your keys on the nail by the door you will never have to look for your keys again for the rest of your life what do you need your keys for inside the house?!
Once you close it, you can't open it unless you have the key fob in close vicinity. I rarely even take it out of my pocket. I have mine set up to auto-lock shortly after I close the door.
Pop the sunroof too? Did you know sun roofs weren't available? Did you know they came with owner's manuals? By 2017 almost anyone that has a Gen 1 Volt knows all this stuff already.
Tip number for about the keeping dead for the battery in the key fob looks like ABS tip cuz of how loose the key actually fits in there pretty much looks like you could take anything like a pen and stick it in there and it would do the same thing tip number two is to get the glove box light to come on in any car that has a light in the glove box you need to have the headlight switch turned to the park or on position to actually get the glove box light to come on so one tip looks like it's not even a real tip it's just a I think this works type thing and the other tip is just too I don't know what I'm doing thing so two of the five tips or just like what am I doing.
no thats not how it works. your car keys have RFID built into the key itself thats how the CAN which is your cars cebtral identity is able to give the go to start the car. when your battery is drained fully your car cant produce the power to receive the signal from your car keys to start. that hole is for the RIFID in low signal able to read the RFID incase the car is drained...
It also has a 12 volt battery for accessories, as does the Prius, and other EV’s. They can be jump-started. The 12v battery is similar to gas burners’.
Come on man, I own a 2001 Duramax truck with a 50 gal auxiliary tank in the bed and 2 Suburbans ('01 and '11), but you gotta admit this electric vehicle technology is cool. I may be picking up a 2015 Volt Premium today, seems like a decent little car that isn't too bad to work on and should be a whole lot less in maintenance than my Duramax. The Volt is also a hybrid, so it's not a totally electric car that'll leave you stranded if you can't charge it, has a 9 gal fuel tank for the engine.
Hope you picked up and are enjoying your Volt. Technically it's not a hybrid, it's a BEV with a gas range extender. The gas engine is an electric generator that powers the electric motor which drives the car. A hybrid has two separate drive trains.

@@DrinkWhiskeyRaiseHell pretty sure I read that in the manual or a safety bulletin.
@@AZsmoothrider for the car to start up right away in the garage, when you left it on, you would have to intentionally open the hood everytime you park it in the garage
the safety feature of the engine running whenever the hood is open is necessary because the car CAN start the engine randomly for a couple of reasons, even when the battery is fully charged. Making the engine start everytime the hood is open and the car is ON keeps you from getting hurt if you decide to change the serpentine belt, or the spark plugs, or change the oil (draining it and having the engine start up would be bad....)
IF you intentionally want to look under the hood while the car is on, with the engine OFF, hold the start button without stepping on the brake, for several seconds. This allows you to probe voltages in the fuse box, listen to pumps running, and check for other issues with the ignition ON but the motor off.
Thanks, Josh! Very cool.
Your video is very helpful; especially for the "all windows down" (I did not know). Now, I wish it had an "all windows UP"
try the lock button in the same manner, idk just a thought
There's probably a safety and liability issue why they didn't include a remote window up function. Just one lawsuit because a kid's hand got caught in the window going up...
Another COOL thing I thought was pretty COOL was this COOL thing. Its so COOL. I mean, ya know, its pretty COOL, cuz I didnt know that it was so COOL.
Also, I think its COOL that i don't know any other adjectives besides the COOL word, "COOL!"
COOL, thanks for being COOL enough to watch my COOL video. COOL!
🤭
After watching the video and reading all of the comments I can see that nobody mentioned the hidden diagnostic mode. You can make the Volt (my Volt is a 2011) go into diagnostic mode by pushing the start button and holding it down without pressing the brake pedal.
Thanks for the info. Good job.
if you have a flat, you will find out there is no spare tire.
Common issue with a number of new cars.... There's an air pump and sealant can as OEM. Probably the same as other cars with no spare.
Really!! I just bought a 2017.
there is no room "to spare"
That secret compartment in the rear with the numbers and stuff is a good spot to stash your backup .357 mag. Good looking out there, Josh.
Some good tips, thank you!
Thanks for the good feedback!
I thought this video was "Pretty Cool" XD lol
I think your comment is pretty cool.
That it was weird that my 2014 Volt did not come with a cabin AC filter, given there is a place to install one. Just installed one, thinking it needed replacement.
None of them did OEM, but there is a slot for one.
That Volt appears to be older than you...
Ha ha
well I thought that was pretty cool
Was that the base model or the premium model
cool vid..thanks for sharing !
Ive read the manual , in your door bins up to the top, theres a spot you can put an umbrella
Love our '17 Volt. Just wish it was a little warmer inside in cold temperatures and not so prone to fogging up the windows. Otherwise, GREAT car!
Thanks. I didn't know #4 or #5.
I’ll be picking up my 2018 volt tomorrow. The perfect car. Can’t wait. Did anyone put a level 2 charger in at home?
chevy volt FB group is great and so is gm-volt dot com. Enjoy !
Tap Tap baby Tap Tap. Volt drivers know what I'm talking about.
Lol what are you talking about?
Be well. Jack
How much did you pay for the car when you bought it?
@@rsewill12 I paid $8300. I found since then several people have had this issue. One had all pwer off on a street. The problem is not even that the problem is 28000 for a battery and about 2000 for instal my chevrolet.
I think this video is pretty cool something to think about
This guy is pretty cool if you ask me
:p
Thanks!!! Greats things to know
Like it bro👍🏼
Cars since like 2007 or so don't really do glove box lights anymore it's kind of an old thing for cars in the 90s and early 2000s to have
the light in the glove compartment has an issue, that has caused trouble for decades
if something in the glove compartment keeps it from closing properly, the little 5 watt light bulb will drain the car battery dead in several days.
You would never notice the light is staying on when the glove compartment is closed, till you take a long trip and leave your car at the airport... or parked at home for a few weeks, and when you come back the battery is totally dead.... Usually you come back on the last flight in at 1AM, and there is no one around for miles....
Is there a way to roll up the windows with the remote?
The numbers you seen in the hideaway panel are for your trim of your car and the Paint code if you ever get your car painted You need that for the exact match of the paint
If you over inflate your tires a few PSI you will gain extra miles .3 mile per Psi per tire Good for dry roads not good for Snow/ice rain or old worn tires ..or extreme over inflation
Have had a Volt for nine years. Didn't know about the windows!
I’m always finding the windows down for seemingly no reason so I kinda hate that feature. I also can’t get the feature to work where you can start the AC while it is charging.
Thank you❣️
Nice about windows. Thanks.
"WHERE DO YOU KEEP UR WEED AT?" In my chevy Volt's stash spot in the trunk!
Just in the center console. I live in a state where medical MJ is legal :)
Next to the numbers and stuff.
In the settings, there's an off-road mode. Does anyone know what that does? I imagine it changes programming in the car in some way.
Very helpful
THANKS!
Is there a way to lock your charging station to secure your charger?
On Gen2 you can make the car alarm if someone unplugs your charging cable. That's probably annoying for a public charger but great for a home charger.
good data!! Thanks for Sharing!
Your welcome!
Pretty cool, indeed.
not sure why so many people are hating on the video with 250 dislikes
Thank you.
what s is the price of the volt
The first gen volts, are actually affordable. If you can find a used one, they are around 8-12k usd.
Never knew it came with a sunroof.
Actually, I'm not positive that it does.
Car Reviews with Josh it doesn't. The new one does not either. But I did not want to be rude about it.
It didn't. I recall seeing pictures of at least one aftermarket conversion though.
Lol. Whole time it’s the same for all Chevy cars 😂😂
Is this car electric or hybrid
I learned nothing, I want my 5 mins back
Any way you look at it , you’d have to agree that car and video were “Pretty Cool”! Lol
nice !
I was about to buy a 2013 volt until i found out about the glove box... what a deal breaker...
Hoping someone knows a way to turn off the dash lights after the ignition is off.
open door
close door
Aww Jeeze, Rick
are you 12?
That first thing about the remote rolling down the windows is my absolute least favorite thing about any car ever... I live somewhere where it rains most of the year, and so that "feature" is absolutely horrible...
wait. why would you hold the button down for 3 full seconds if you don't want to roll the windows down?
@@looseparts I wouldn't on purpose... it usually would happen to me when the dog jumps on my lap and sets his paw on my pocket where my keys are, or things like that for example.
Honda makes you press twice and long press on the 2nd time. It prevents most accidental roll downs.
Why didn't they fit it with a rear wiper? Cant' believe it doesn't have one. Media climate control cant be seen in bright sunlight if you have the white dash. Other than that it's the nicest quietest car I've ever owned. NB I should say mines the Holden version - I believe the suspension is probably stiffer the the US version I take speed humps slowly and haven't had a real problem with the front spoiler.
Don’t copy Chris fix in the beginning please. Come up with something of the ur own.
You added useful tips, but could have done so without knocking the young man's effort. Constructive criticism with kindness is always better received.
backup for 5 miles?! thats insane!
Oh boy
This is an OLD volt. Probably the first model.
Yes it's a 1st gen Volt.
I’ve hated everything that came from Detroit for years- including Motown music- but I really like what I’ve seen of the Chevy volt. I’d love to have one!
I still love my 2013 in 2019. Amazing car.
Before that, I was tempted to modify the key so the unlock button no longer worked.
get a nail about 2 inches long
get a hammer
pound the nail into the wall right by your front door, about half way
when you enter your house put your keys on the nail by the door
you will never have to look for your keys again for the rest of your life
what do you need your keys for inside the house?!
Every go vehical does the window thing if it has power windows and keyless entry
I meant GM not go
And Nissan
I don't know how to lock the trunk on my volt....
Once you close it, you can't open it unless you have the key fob in close vicinity. I rarely even take it out of my pocket. I have mine set up to auto-lock shortly after I close the door.
1st!
Josh Henriquez Thanks!
Pop the sunroof too? Did you know sun roofs weren't available? Did you know they came with owner's manuals? By 2017 almost anyone that has a Gen 1 Volt knows all this stuff already.
Omgggg! Listening to you talk drove me nuts!!! Breathe and speak dude!!!
Ha ha
If your battery was dead the car wouldn't start. It's an electric engine.....
Jerry taylor I was saying the battery in the key fob.
Jerry taylor lmao he’s talking about the key
It also has a 12 volt battery for accessories, as does the Prius, and other EV’s. They can be jump-started. The 12v battery is similar to gas burners’.
Did you know there isnt a sunroof in any volt kid?
Wtf you can see a light in the glove box
No light
Is this a boy or girl
error 404 will be a future.
fk eletric cars
Thanks for wasting my time.
