Some parents only look at their kids as cash cows when they're old enough to work. The only reason my mom and stepdad are 'accepting' that I'm transitioning is because I pay rent. I can almost certainly bet that will change when I move out. And honestly I think that'll be for the best. They already worry that me being trans is going to confuse my 5 year old niece.... But the funniest part is that my sister who's in prison has more sense than them, and actually wants to respect me, my gender, and knows that I'm not a danger to her daughter. And she's wanting to know more about what I'm going through

My sister and I never got along growing up, our father pitting us against each other constantly and preventing us from having a healthy childhood. But since she's been in prison she's been actually nice to talk to, and eager to grow a relationship with me. She's more mature than my parents

Scapegoating is basically blaming person B for something actually done by person A or forcing person B to endure the consequences of person A's actions. Since there's so much religion in this video, I'll use that as an example. Jesus is the scapegoat of Christianity though they will never admit it. He died for their sins. He took the punishment for their actions.

@EllariaZer the old testament is actually where the word scape goat comes from! It's part of a ritual where you kill one giat and drive another into the wilderness, the one you didn't kill carries your sin away, so in a way Jesus is a expansion on the scapegoat concept but he's also a willing agent so that separates them.(theologians are still arguing over it)

Ugh, when I went off to university my parents *"informed"* me that I needed to call or text them EVERY DAY!!! I'd figured out by that point that they were a little overbearing and controlling, but thought that was excessive even for them, and told them that wouldn't be happening because that's ridiculous. Their rebuttal? "Well how will be know you're still alive?". Like IDK, you could call me? I gave them my schedule so they would know when I was free, and without fail for the entire semester they only called me during class and complained I never answered the phone. It got so bad I had to put my phone on mute during class because if I didn't answer they would call back like 6 times in a row. The first time it happened I stepped out of class figuring it was an emergency (cause why else would they call me 6 times in a row when they knew I was in class) only to find out they wanted to know if I could visit in a month. I hung up and went back to class only for them to scream at me about being rude. Cause apparently calling 6 times during class for a non emergency isn't rude? Every time I'd point out I didn't answer because I was in class (you know, the responsible thing to do) they'd say they didn't know and how were they supposed to know my schedule. Like IDK, cause you asked me for it and I personally printed it out and taped it above the phone for you?
And yeah, it only took me like three weeks into uni to figure out they weren't just a "little" overbearing and controlling. Then they confirmed it several weeks later when they showed up to my dorm building unannounced (and they live in a different city) and called me to ask me to let them in. Seeing as I was sitting in a restaurant when I answered the phone I was VERY confused. Like, let you in where? Very snarkily I was told "Your building????" as if I should've known they were standing outside of it. I told them I was out with friends and they demanded to know where I was "because we came all this way to see you so you have spend time with us". When I told them this trip had already been rescheduled multiple times and I wasn't cancelling, at which point I was called rude for disrespecting their time and plans. 🤦 Like oh yeah, you don't say. At which point I told them to have a nice day, hung up and turned off my phone. When my friends asked what my parents wanted I told them they'd driven out to visit me and demanded I cancel my plans to spend time with them they all thought I was joking, and then got really quiet when they realized I was being completely serious.
Oh, and they have no idea why I don't visit more often. I mean besides the first thing I can usually hear is screaming, and yes, I mean from outside the house. But apparently that's not an argument, "just a mild disagreement".

Two back to back calls means to call back asap. Even when my parents have been having...a moment, they still wait a minute or so before calling again. And in my brother’s case, part of it is due to the fact that he has brain damage from suffering epileptic seizures and former drug abuse that ended up making his already existing epilepsy worse. My husband has only done it a few times, purely by accident because he knew me by my former name when we first met years ago, and he’s immediately apologized after and called me the right name. And ya not everyone has the time for that, but if you got money for church, then you also have the money to drop off some nutritious food to your local food bank that can actually help someone who needs it instead of helping your preacher pay for their 2nd car. Having been in an abusive situation myself as a child, I completely understand the subconscious reasoning to always seek your parents approval. it's only once you have gotten the help/support you deserve, distanced yourself from toxic people, and been allowed to grow and create healthy relationships with others, that you realize it is actually because you only wanted to be loved and that you were being deprived of it, and that you subconsciously sought it out, but that you had no control over the situation at that time. It is also so difficult to get out of the situation in the first place because this becomes your "normal" and there is a subconscious fear of change. Basically because you've been through it before, you know you will be able to survive it somehow (predict and plan etc), versus jumping into the unknown. I understand because I sometimes stayed in the situation myself, because when placed in foster care instead, the situation sometimes became worse than it was at "home", and I didn't like the idea of that possibly occurring multiple times. Sometimes I simply was just too young or didn't have the means to survive on my own. But honestly, those situations were crap and if any of the "adults" whose care I was in actually acted like how parents are supposed to, my sense of "normal" maybe wouldn't have been so twisted. I have thankfully been out of that situation for 12 years now and have been no contact for 6. I'm doing a lot better now and have come to better terms with my experiences and trauma over the years (we all are our own worst critic, and I try not to beat myself up too much with "would've/could've/ should've" or thinking that somehow I deserved it, or that I am worth less, etc). Even though I don't think I will ever be fully "okay," I am significantly better than I was then, and I have learned to appreciate that, and not tear myself down, or hold myself to impossible expectations. It's okay to not be okay, and it's also healthy to get help when you need it. And having mental illness, a disorder, trauma, or getting help doesn't make you weak. Just finding the courage enough to get out of the situation or distance yourself from toxic people is strength in itself, as well as continuing self-care/help ❤ I wish you happiness and hope things work out for you too!

@@thetechyboi It really depends what religion is to someone. I don't think it's fixation on laws, it's a method of controlling behaviour. It just happened that fear and scaremongering are better clickbait than positive messages.
Imagine, you're a sentient human being and there's a moral problem. For example, someone somewhere says "you can't eat red apples". Sentient human beings will have a think and be capable of coming to their own conclusion, they might consider things like causing harm to something or someone due to this activity, their own opinion etc will be formed after some process, they might decide to eat or not eat red apples. They will also be capable of reanalysing the red apple moral problem and possibly changing their stance on red apples later in life. Because surely, if eating red apples is a moral problem, there will be more data later in time and someone's similar thought process but with different data might genuinely lead them to a different conclusion. This is healthy. But you are effectively becoming a judge of every single issue, and you need to be responsible for your own decision, and not everyone will be like that.
Political religion is when someone doesn't want to come to their own conclusion. They want someone to tell them what the rules are, and they are willing to blindly follow those rules in exchange for 0 moral workout. They are offloading the moral dilemma onto others and are pretty much at their mercy, because most religions are all or nothing. So if X tells you that you are not a good person or you will not reach salvation if you eat red apples, and your priority is to be good person/salvation, you will obey red apple rule if you're not willing to take the risk of making decision yourself. If X then updates rules to add 'no green apple', then you just continue to obey. Political religion is so 'anti' everything, heavily focused on what one can't do rather than on things you have to do to meet religion's criteria of salvation. As people follow those bans and rules, they get so deep that at some point, changing your opinion or developing your own opinion becomes impossible - you don't want to admit you were wrong and you blindly followed batshit crazy set of rules. It's like Stockholm's syndrome.
There's also normal religion and normal people. Some religious rules are morally universally correct and undisputable. Don't kill, don't steal and the like. They are good enough to be a religion on it's own, and frankly can just be abstract moral ruleset one chooses for themselves without calling it a religion. Religious radicals felt like it doesn't give them enough control so they keep developing more moral contructs (it's like a parent that invents silly household rules in order to bend the child to their will). I know some Christians that follow basics of the religion and don't feel the need to go obey more arbitrary rules. This type of person is also the most likely the type of person who will assume that everyone should think for themselves - because that's what they themselves do. They are silent, and logically so, the moment you start preaching about anything, you become the rule giver so exactly what autonomous sentient human being chose to not do.

Christian parents never seem to understand how disrespectful they are to their non-Christian kids. Usually their kids are respectful of their religion like going to church with them, not being rude during a prayer, not openly badmouthing their religion in front of them, etc. But when it comes to us saying something like "Hey could you please not bring up your religion constantly during every conversation" they get all pissy and act like you just said the most horrifically blasphemous thing ever. They are so obsessed with their religion that it's literally a personality trait at this point. I can't think of a single topic that I manage to squeeze into every single conversation yet these parents can do it multiple times.

My aunt is Christian, whereas I'm not really religious. She doesn't know that though. I never said anything about the difference in beliefs; I complied with going to church for about 2 years when she forced me to, I never spoke while we prayed during some dinners or when she told us to pray as a family for someone, etc.
One day, she was taking my sister and I somewhere. I was having a bad day, and wasn't in the mood to deal with the Christian music she listens to. So when she turned it on I politely asked, "can we maybe listen to something else?"
She slammed on the brakes in the middle of the highway - causing my seatbelt to choke me - then screamed at me for 5-10 minutes before turning the car back around and brought us home.

I’ve been no contact 5 months and my therapist has told me she’s seen the stress literally melt off of me the longer I don’t speak to them. Like the ptsd episodes have mostly stopped and nightmares are rare now, all because my controlling mother no longer has my phone number to harass me with, which triggered me constantly.
Like everything I did before NC felt like walking on thin cracked ice, like I was physically paralyzed with fear and couldn’t move, because I knew my mother would interrogate me later and lying wouldn’t make her stop. And this was even with me living over 500 miles away from her. I lived my life constantly thinking of what my mother would think, want or say to me over the phone all because she was so invasive that lying to her to get any kind of privacy was impossible. Usually the lie would make her go off about another thing she hated about me or how I was living my life-always something to critique.
And some things I _did_ have to lie about for safety, like my gender, sexuality, plans for transition, attending support groups and therapy. My mother knew about my gender and sexuality because I came out, but she was incredibly cruel and forced me back into the closet. It’s much more freeing that I can be honest and not hide anything. She was what was holding me back from getting in testosterone-after coming out she was even more critical of my appearance, mannerisms, and voice.

@@RenaissanceRockerBoyand if they keep a clean home, it doesn't matter much. That's why poor families tend to have longer issues. They're homes are more likely to be a bit messy as they tend to have less space and are often working long hours, meaning they have less time to dedicate 6, 8+hrs to deep cleaning the house everyday. And since those that are poor tend to be automatically labeled as dirty, just a little bit of clutter, so as in not filth, will go against them. And it tends to look more cluttered because, again, they often have smaller spaces to live in. I don't know about in other countries, but in the u.s., child services don't have a lot of authority and have to be let in. So if you refuse to answer the door, they can't make you. This is how a LOT of abusers get away with things. They can't be investigated of they refuse to cooperate because unlike with the police, there are no ramifications. So pretty much unless you already have enough evidence to present to the police to show a judge, there isn't much they can do in those cases.

I keep telling him that that's a one way ticket to his kids going no contact once they're out of the house, and he says they'll be grateful for it. I also keep telling him that I think it's better for their futures to let them save their money instead of paying their parents to avoid being neglected, but it's always "well, you can parent your way, and I'll parent my way." He also made it clear that he's going to spank his children anytime they misbehave.
He has bad anger issues and used to abuse me when we lived with our parents until my stepfather finally put him in a group home. Not to protect me by the way, but because he was frustrated that he didn't listen to him. I know that he'll use his anger to justify hurting his kids, so if he ends up managing to keep a relationship going long enough to have kids, I will do my damndest to make sure those kids are safe.
Suffice to say, my stepfather did a number on him. He and I are polar opposites because he looks up to our stepfather and I learned what NOT to do by watching my stepfather.

Yikes. I hope for the theorhetical kids' sake that your brother never does have kids. Can speak from experience that spanking only makes kids fear and resent their parents; it definitely does not actually teach them morals or logical thinking. And that's assuming the spanking is controlled and not just a thinly veiled way to let parents vent their anger on the kids. Can also confirm that making your child pay rent, even when they're 18 or even 22 and graduated college, is a surefire way to get them to move out immediately. It doesn't 'teach how the world works' but rather makes them realize that they'd be better off living somewhere that their money is used to get safety and security and privacy and personal freedom instead of overbearing and controlling parents over their shoulders and invading their privacy. Here's hoping you never have nieces, nephews, or whatever the nonbinary term is from that sibling.

Best skills for parents to teach kids:
saving money, cooking their own food, incentives to keep their living space clean/discussions of what can grow/appear in dirty spaces.

I got yelled at at 14 when I was openly showing symptoms of being super depressed. 20 years on I still am, I just avoid that family member like they got the plague.
But then his way of helping was to scream at symptoms until I masked them, and then declare problem solved.
I now have complex health issues in addition to depression. And I will never forgive him.

This caused me to mentally skip puberty, and always made me feel not being able to fit in with my age peers. Now I (at 46), simply start to accept that I will always be the odd one out.

Yeah... you're not alone in that. It gets worse when said parents have untreated mental issues/traumas : you can't be "sad"/"depressed", you have loving parents that provide for you! I did not have what you had, so you are not allowed to feel bad! (Said, while yelling at my teen self. Suffice to say, it got worse the following years, and they almost lost a child. Being grateful has nothing to do with mental health! In my case it worsened it)

I heard it can also be triggered by head trauma though it is rarer. The issue is that it's one of those conditions with such a long list of different symptoms and that the media has warped it to mean something it's not. So we have people who don't get treated out of fear or being misdiagnosed and people who are getting treated that have those around them treat them poorly which is depressing.

I would clarify, if you have a predisposition to a mental illness, the symptoms can be brought on by trauma, even if there were no signs of it before. Depression and BPD often work the same way. The predisposition was likely always there. So someone on the outside looking in is not in any position to declare it's not real.

28:35 funnily enough, Satanism isn't even devil-worship, it's literally just being an atheist with a moral code, including but not limited to:
    -let people be themselves
-do not harm children, and protect them
-don't push your religious views on other people, especially not your kids
-all sexualities are valid, including asexuality (which, given the satanic bible is from 1969 (nice) was a pleasant surprise to read, especially bc I'm ace), and consent is important

@@EntropyAndSingularity huh. My first thought was rather toward how we've domesticated goats and sheep from the same animal, and that they attributed it to Jesus somehow lol- guess my thinking is too literal for this stuff. (Well, that and the concept of the judas-goat)
"Satanist" was essentially a slur for non-believers, to scare believers away from questioning things or lacking in showing devotion and subsequently being associated with devil-worship - an "us vs them" mentality.
Can't speak for other people, but I personally don't mind conformity in some ways, so long as it isn't enforced upon me.
These days, Satanist groups mainly use their status as an acknowledged "religion" to keep the church and state separate, or provide hygiene products and condoms in communities where proper sex-ed is severely lacking.

My parents were (and stil are) not perfect but that mindset really stuck with me and actually really made me feel confortable to talk to them about personal stuff! They are also very open to talk about thing like sex, alcohol and drug and, in my opinion, it really had a great impact on my siblings and I! We never really felt the necessity of trying those stuff behind my parents back because we knew that they would't be mad at us for it, they would more likely be worried about our health. We have a lot of younger siblings and come from a poor background, and it's a simple way to support everyone and help pay for food we're all eating. If you don't have a job for a while, there's no salary, therefore no need to pay, and they're not strict with it. and literally any work before 18, we got to keep our money to treat ourselves since we never had an allowance :)

      @JelenaMajic A third sounds like a lot, ngl. 😳
Though I can't judge your situation with poverty, but generally I think parents should only charge rent from their adult children if it's absolutely necessary and only as much as needed. The main focus should be on enabling the adult child to save up to afford their own home and move into their own household, not to hold them down with rent payments. If you move out, that's probably a bigger financial relief to your parent's household than your rent payment could be anyway, so in the long run, allowing you to save up and live on your own as fast as possible would probably be the smarter decision for your parents.
Oh, and it's a good thing they don't demand rent from their underage children, since I'm very sure that would be ILLEGAL. Parents are supposed to provide food, shelter and adequate clothing to their underage children free of charge. That's like the minimum requirement to being a legal guardian.

Oh damn, I am 40 and my mom is still alive. She sadly checks so many of these boxes. My siblings and myself sat her down to discuss her behavior and actions. Her response was to pay for a IQ test to prove she didn't have any personality disorders.
She used to be in charge of the special education department at the local school. Was fired one day and still won't discuss the reasons leading up to that, I am disturbed that she may have been mentally abusive to her students.

Regarding “men do cry”, I am 100 percent sure my dad has not cried since he was a child. This is not about masculinity or emotional insecurity, it’s just who he is. He doesn’t register emotions like most people. I was gobsmacked last week when I moved 2000km away and he gave me a hug before I left. I know he loves me, always has and always will, it’s just not something that is talked about, or shown, or acknowledged. Don’t get me wrong, he is definitely the outlier in this situation. I have no problem with men crying and in fact my brother wears his heart on his sleeve and has no problem showing it. It is shitty for a woman to tell someone “men don’t cry” though.

Most commonly I actually cry at sad scenes with my own characters in my own writing XD

@@alayzard4295honestly as an ex Christian I wish the crazy minority wasn't the media's mouthpiece for religion as well, because there's a lot of actually very sweet and accepting people who are religious but it's not the side you generally see and ig it's because the quiet ones aren't insecure in their belief so don't need to constantly shove their ideals down other people's throats. Honestly probably not everyone's cup of tea (some of it ain't mine either and that's ok) but I actually like the song "Religion Reduced" by Simon Curtis because to me it def gives off the vibe of, religion anymore to so many people is more about power and status then a personal spiritual journey when it is, or at least it's supposed to be, the latter. I really hope some sense of balance is brought about though and the extremes of every single group online stop having such a big voice because they really do bring everyone down. Sorry about that, I was raised by one of those fanatics and ik they're not helping either of us when most of the rest of the church I used to get drug to were nice, I just went my own way as I saw fit and wouldn't try to force anyone either way since ik from experience that's how you get people to run from, not join your own belief system. 18:30 The non-apology apology is so fucking infuriating, especially if you can tell they don't mean it in the slightest. I remember being upset after a visit to a psychiatrist because he wasn't listening to me at all, my mother told me to calm down and I ended up snapping at her that I wouldn't even have to go there in the first place if she didn't beat me up to when I was physically able to start fighting back. She literally rolled her eyes and said "Sorry" in a "I'm sorry you feel that way" tone. That's the only apology I ever got from her, because on another occasion she told me she never did anything to me, I made my abuse up because I'm mentally ill and that's not her fault so I should stop blaming her. I literally have scars to prove it. I have three fucking siblings and the two I'm in contact with remember our childhood the same way. But sure, we all collectively made it up and I have BPD because I never went through any trauma at all. 🙃

Both of my parents have very painful diseases and so they always thought my sister and I to not complain about pain as we don't know what real pain is. It really affected us, me more than my sister. Every time I was in pain, no matter what it was, I just had to suck it up and carry on. I once went an entire day with a badly sprained ankle before being brought to the hospital. Not to mention all my abdominal pain that I went through for decades. Finally I got diagnosed with PCOS, a very painful medical condition and that I've had it since I started puberty (which happened when I was 10). The very (literally) painful lesson here is to not diminish others' pain because while it might not be the same as yours, it is no less real and can often be a sign of something very serious going on with them. Your pain is real, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Also, everybody's pain threshold is different, it doesn't make anybody better because they can tolerate or handle it better than someone else.
