Instead of lowering the back seat and leaving my trunk open, I tied it to my roof. This improvised roof rack worked great on my Honda Civic, but make sure you have a proper understanding of knots before you attempt this. You can tie down a Christmas tree the same way.

top timber tip: next time orient the timbers resting on their shorter edge, next to each other instead of on top of each other. That will dramatically reduce flex and bounce on longer timbers.
That is a great tip. If you have to stack them could you alternate? One layer wide, next layer tall? That way the stack wouldn't get tall as quickly but you still reduce flex?
A 2x4 measures 1.5"x3.5" so they wouldn't line up very well. Maybe a couple rows high. I do like your thinking
@@steelonius Better not to stack them up on a car roof. Better to lay them out across the roof to spread the load, instead of putting all the load in one spot.

Nicely done, I've seen knots where a person knot knowing just tie a lot of randomness, then take forever untieing or resort to cutting the cord off. I like using a bowlin for anchoring then an engenieers knot to tension against my end point. I like learning better ways of doing common things. Keep up the good work.

The anchor points used here look like they'll keep the side airbags clear as well (vs. tieing through the windows), excellent!

Very nice. Just a thought though; might consider going through the anchor points, back up to a truckers hitch loop and then tighten by pulling downward. 2:1 mechanical advantage plus easier than pushing upwards. That's how we would tighten down loads on the farm.

This is also how I learned to tie small boats to a roof. One question - what’s the purpose of the two half hitch loop at the end?
@UnderstatementJones1 The Blackmail Hitch can slip and the half-hitches prevent that. The Blackball is used to hold tension while you tie off the line but isn't secure enough to be the final tie-off.potential.

1/4” paramax is my favorite. I use it for almost everything. I also just picked up a smaller cord called “micro 90”. I’ll make a video on it soon. I stay away from twisted rope and prefer braided.

Enjoyed this video and the one one tying down steel square tube in the bed of a truck... But I just got a 24' long trailer so I can haul 24' stock from the steel yard, so part of me is sad that I don't really /need/ to do this. Ordered some paracord and going to practice knots. Maybe try a sling, etc.
I'm surprised you didn't use angler's loop or a figure 8 knot for anchor loop but I suppose overhand knot is secure enough.

Curious to see how one would tie down bars from a roof rack using towels or even those foam block kits for strapping down canoes without a rack. Well, I had to do that today, to transport SUP, but what I did definitely has room for improvement. I used 1k/lb kevlar cord.

I often have seen people struggling to tie things to their roof at hardware stores. You see them wrap things very tightly, then the knot adds a bunch of slack. These friction knots are what most second class armatures are missing. :-)

And there is a way to fold the towers where you form a pocket and feed the free ends in so you can toss them around and they stay folded. This way a fella could use old towels, fold them, and keep them in a trunk or box as a kit for frequent use.

It’s the same knot, it just has more than one name. It’s also called a cow hitch or girth hitch
automatic trucker's hitch does not look safe by itself without additional control hitch. It does not work with my rope (not paracord) Probably, it works only with soft type of ropes

It is better to rope both towels and 2x4 togehter You can wrap towels around the lumbers before lasso ropes . so towles cannot slip away due to errorenous roping.

I just lower the passenger seat and the rear seat back and load all the 2x4x8 inside from the back to front... in a small nissan sentra ... roof rack is only for 4x8 plywood or bigger sticks and legally the stick can be up to 2ft pass the bumper with a red flag at the end... I would not trust knots because I am bad at them so I rather use ratchet straps and loop it all around the top and bottom of the roof , beat any knot any time.
Drill a 3/8” holes in roof
Drill corresponding holes in 2x4
Use 5” bolts & washers & locktite
Silicone the holes
Tighten that bitch

So the part where you say you're putting a "lark's foot" on the 2x4s, it's more commonly called a girth hitch in that configuration. Obviously there are millions of different names and you're not exactly "wrong", but in this comment I'm going to be using the most common names in case anyone else reads this and wants to do their own research.
Now your girth hitch in that spot isn't bad per se, but a better one might be a clove hitch. Not only would a clove hitch tighten more effectively, it would also allow you to adjust the position of the 2x4 more easily with the tension removed.
Also, I think you'd be fine using only one line on three attachment points, as long as you used the middle attachment point that was farthest from the boards. The one line actually does give you tension from both sides; even tho the trucker's hitch is on one end of each leg, the tension equalizes when the board moves slightly. Of course it's great to use two lines, but I wouldn't bother myself.
