Okay... Australia drives on the left side of the road. Since they’re also diving upside down, does that mean that they’re actually driving on the right side of the road?
Right side of road makes sense Majority of people in the world are right handed, anywhere between 85-90% of people. Gear Shifts being mounted in the center console means that having your right hand to manipulate it is optimal so the driver is seated on the left. Its best to have cars so that the passanger side is on the side that normally drops off at the curb, making it easier and safer to handle children. History and logistics plays a huge part in why people do things differently, but in reality right is logically optimal.
ask any person who grew up in aleft side driving country and they will never say they had a problem because of the gear lever being on the left. you find it hard to use the gear lever with your left hand because youre used to using your right hand for it, and not because writing with one hand automatically makes it easier to shift gears with the same hand. its just a bunch of notches, you dont need percision. you know what you do need percision for, though? the god damn steering wheel. and youre supposed to keep both hands on it.
It does make sense to drive on the right for same reasons romans drove on the left - most people are right handed (whether you like it or not), and shifting gears (on manual, but even changing modes on automatic), operating your stereo or AC, or even taking something from the glove box (while you're not moving!!!) is all way less distracting and more convenient if you do it with your right hand. So that stuff has to be on the right, and consequently steering wheel - on the left.
This left hand driving in Sweden more than 50 yrs ago, something quite weird. As all its neighbors with right hand driving. I remember Swedish registrated vehicels with very mostly left hand drive, yrs b4 Sep03rd 1967. Then the country's well considered transition left hand to right hand traffic took place. This a project undoubtly implemented without serious problems of predictability👍😀.
Congrats, you are the first person that I am aware of, who has come close to getting this thing right. One correction, Samoa changed to driving on the left, so as to benefit from importing excellent used cars from Japan, not Australia, or New Zealand. Otherwise, excellent video.
And Aussies and New Zealand are now following them with electric vehicles. Although now there is a different charging plug from the rest of the world to contend with… so that could be interesting because that plug was considered pretty much obsolete as I understand it due to Europe settling on a different standardised plug and Australia following Europe, but maybe the other plug will make a comeback in Australia due to second hand Japanese vehicles? Who knows.
Up until the 1920's, there was a mix of left and right driving in Canada. In Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, people drove on the right (and still do). In the other provinces, people drove on the left.
I would actually prefer left-side driving with right-side steering wheel. Especially for manual transmission (that I miss so much), this setup would leave you with the right hand always on the steering wheel. It's not just about the shift lever, but also using the electronics, climate control, handbrake (when available in lever form, mounted in the center, and when desired), drinking, eating, whatever.
I’d been wondering about this for so long, thank you for this video! Some of my suspicions about the origins were correct, but many other things I had no idea about!
I actually like my RHD Cabrio on Right Drive Roads (Germany) so much, that I ordered my new Car as a Right Hand Drive too. There are more Advantages, than disadvantages. You Can overtake normally (sometimes even better as you peekright next to your "victim"xd), get out on the Walkway, can rest your hand on the door with open window, cause left hand steers better, shifting is easier if you got into it.. Only disadvantages are overtaking a big truck on a reaaaally straight road. doesnt happen too often that a road is that long and straight in Germany tho. What some would consider a disadvantage, is kinda fun for me. Going into a drive in backwards.
I tried driving a LHD on left driving roads and found I basically needed a co-driver to overtake obstacles, since I couldn't see oncoming traffic properly.
@@El-Burrito Well you can't drive too close to an oncoming obstacle without being blinded that's true. But if it's a moving normal sized car infront of me, I usually peek from the right side of the car, which would be the left in your case. Or even more often is just using the full vision I get from coming out of a corner as Roads, aside from autobahn, are rarely straight for very long sections but just long enough for a overtake, making for a lot of opportunities o:
We ,here in Czechoslovakia, drove left till 14th March 1939...Next morning ,in heavy snow fall came German army on the right side of the road and that´s the reason we changed driving overnight...
As an American, driving in Italy I think is the most interesting. There I think the rule is, "Drive where ever you damned well please" or that may just be in Naples.
Good insight. I've been trying to think of a downside to driving right hand right side, and now I know that it would make head on collisions potentially more prevalent. My argument is: Most people are right handed Don't have to flip for mail trucks Safer for driver to enter vehicle Head on collisions won't harm driver as much Turning right on red, you are seated further right allowing you to see more left
@Alladeen Madafaker Just like YOU people drive on right and have the steering wheel on left. It's not rocket science bro, that's how the whole world works...
@Alladeen Madafaker No worries! Before this video I was also really confused. This is how I keep it in my mind: Where ever the steering wheel is, you drive on the opposite side and vice versa...
@@usmantariq7997 Unless you are driving a mail truck or a garbage truck. Some vehicles are strategically designed for a driver on the sidewalk side, rather than a driver on the oncoming traffic side, because of tasks they have to do on the side of the road.
when you keep your right hand (most people are right handed) on the steering all the time, and consequently using your left hand to control the stick, that is when you know you're driving on the proper side of the road.
Using your left hand on the wheel is honestly not that bad. You have enough strength in your non-dominate hand to control the wheel. It doesn't take much effort.
One of the other reasons that countries like Japan, Ireland, Australia etc haven't had to change is that they are Islands so therefore they don't share land borders with other right side of the road countries. I know India and South Africa buck this trend, but they are very coastal (India is a massive peninsula) so they still don't depend too highly on land borders.
They dont want to change. Japan and America make the best cars and America makes right hand drive models for us so they are all fine just like here in the UK

As a mailman: right hand drive in a right lane world isn't all that strange after the first few times. Starts to feel fairly normal. Occasionally I'll find myself riding a little close to the yellow line but it's not some constant thing you have to monitor. The hardest part of it is intersections that join at steep angles. Say the road your on intersects another road at a 30 degree angle and you want to go right. you have to stay to the way right of the lane, then nearing the end of the road your on, cut the wheel all the way to the left and creep up so you can see, then cut all the way back to the right to make the turn. Gets old sort of quick. (P.s. if you're ever behind a mailman whose setup like this, DO NOT PASS HIM ON THE RIGHT JUST BECAUSE HE MAY HAVE LEFT SPACE) That and merging onto highways can be rough if your mirrors aren't set up perfect... mixed with a total lack of acceleration can make a scary situation. And this is coming from a guy who dailys a Mercedes 240d.
Last I checked a lot of the old Grumman's mail vans as well as the jeeps before that use RHD steering layout instead of LHD (for the reason of having to reach for the mailbox) in the united states

Being right-handed and living in the states, I love the way a manual cars controls are set up. Allowing right-handed drivers to shift gears in a manual car with absolute smoothness and speed ( because of higher dexterity in the right hand ) especially when racing. I always wondered if left handed people here ( in the states ) have a lack of nimbleness When changing gears at a faster rate? For example, do they find themselves grinding gears more often than a right-handed driver would? Also does anyone know how the foot pedals are configured as well as the positions of the gears in a manual car built for other countries that drive on the right hand side?
You are right about Napoleon fixing the left hand march/drive issue The really real reason why Napoleon forced right hand walk/ride/drive was because how armies moved. Armies marched/rode on the left. Napoleon fooled his opponents by letting the enemy think his troops were retreating (by walking/marching on the right) while in fact they were getting closer. Militairy deception. It has NOTHING to do with Napoleon's will to make everyone march/ride on the right hand side out of spite (because the English walked on the left). ABSOLUTELY nothing. ZERO. Zilch...
In Namibia we drive on the left side of the road when moving forward. And when heading backwards,we drive on the right side. Our cars are also right-handed. If you import an car from another country, like the US, you can still have your car right-handed, but you've to follow the rules/law's of the road.
This is why driving on the left is correct Most people are right handed and if you drive on the left your steering wheel is on the right so you have your good (right) hand on the wheel and your bad(left) hand on the shifter because steering is more important and must be more precise Thankyou for your time #move to aus
@@jakob9614 That's why Flanders said, "Lord help you if you want to drive a standard transmission", when listing the disadvantages of being left-handed.
Here in South Africa we ride on the correct side of the road which is the left. Motorcycle rider get on their bikes from the left side of the bike and getting off puts you out of the way of oncoming traffic. Much safer where you step into the path of oncoming cars and trucks. There are even videos warning of this problem.Metric system came into play way back just after I qualified as an artisan.
Technically driving on the left with the steering on the right is the ideal thing. When we hold the steering with one hand and the gear shift with the other, in case of emergencies we would like to have the dominant hand on the steering wheel. Since most people around the world are right handed, it makes more sense. But ofcourse it only applies to manuals.
I’m from Indonesia. I just want to clarify that even we used to under the Dutch, we drive RHD car, but your illustration map says we drive the LHD car. Cheers mate!
Driving on the left is a safety feature. The majority of people are right handed,. In a sudden accident situation, the dominant hand will be raised in defence and your car will jink to the left. If you drive on the right hand side of the road you are more likely to slew left into a head on collision with oncoming traffic, rather than run off on to the verge of the road.
@@kevinnelson6070 There are a couple of exceptions: 1. Myanmar. They drive on the right, as a political statement about their independence from the British empire. But have RHD cars, due to importing from all of their neighboring countries having RHD cars. 2. The US and British Virgin Islands. They drive on the left for historical reasons because of donkeys that couldn't be re-trained in the pre-car days, but most cars are LHD and built for the US market.
Another reason the US might never go left side...most all highways are designed for right side driving. I’m not sure that entry and exit ramps are designed to be ubiquitous at normal speeds. One is designed to accelerate...the other to decelerate. Road modifications are very expensive.
FYI you do not whip animals when they are pulling wagons, you whip near them to scare them. You dont want to hurt your horses or have them go out of control.
Driving on the left makes much more sense tbh. Given that predominantly most people in the world are right handed, the steering wheel should be controlled by the right hand since it involves more precise inputs and shifting gears can easily be accomplished by one's weaker left hand.
Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia drives on the left. Once Napoleon conquered mainland Europe, the colonies of conquered countries still maintained their driving side. Also, Macau drives on the left along with Hong Kong, while mainland China drives on the right. Switching bridges allow people to switch sides when crossing from one domain to another.
Lol I drive in the mines on the left side and sometimes when I drive my personal car on a dirt road I catch my self driving on the wrong side !!!! Just got to remember that I got to pay attention more often. Love watching your videos thanks
Adding to my last comment is because most of the world+America drives on the right it maybe makes English cars with steering on the right a shade more expensive so that maybe that counts slightly against us( and most yanks and Europeans comment that they consider us to drive on the "wrong "side of the road ) but what you have done a great job of showing in this video is really no one side is better then the other but in all cases the reason and location that leads to the side of the road a nation picks is always correct! What USA has for sure better then U.K. Is on two lane motorways with medium levels of traffic your traffic flows much better because you all have auto transmissions with cruise control while in England as we mostly have manuals with drivers who constantly change lanes and needlessly overtake causing more needless traffic for those behind …… manuals are better on the open road and on big hills but other then somebody who either has a dodgy left leg and/or lives in the middle of a gridlocked city it's the only time automatic cars are better although with electric cars and cvt gearboxes this will gradually change.
In Europe if you walk on the road and there's no dedicated sidewalk, you always walk on the left side, that is still stapled in the laws. It was only the traffic of horses and carts that changed with napoleon, not walking :)
You also walk on the left in the US, so that you can see the oncoming traffic that affects you the most, unless there is a dedicated sidewalk where people walk both directions.
Driving on the left is best practise, because majority of people are right handed so in an emergancy maneuver situation it is best to have your dominate hand on the steering wheel.
So, the system codified hundreds of years before the French devised the metric system, relies on it? How so? You do know why the "Imperial" system cane about and is a natural system to humans? Nature has no metric system, it is naturally Imperial but based on old agricultural measures. The metric system is far easier to always work out. 1kg = 1L of fluids etc.
I'm from Australia so I drive on the left... but I've become curious about driving on the right because I think one day I'll need to know how to drive in a right-lane-driving country
Another factor that influenced the US to drive on the right was the horse and gun. When approaching a stranger whilst on a horse it was easier to use your right hand and turn your body slightly to the right so the gun was aimed across the body and the horse's neck. So the approaching party would pass to your left. Incidentally I learned to drive in a RHD car. Then I moved to Canada so I had to swap over. Now I live in the UK it's back to a RHD car. But I also have a LHD and 2 RHD cars. Strangest bit was when I first drove a LHD car I found myself opening my door every time I stopped at the lights. I realised it was because my left hand would automatically ensure the car was in first gear when I stopped (in my RHD car) but instead it found the door handle in the LHD.

With words like that I’d hate to be in a spelling bee.
Hej Hej ( i dont know if it's correct)
"do you drive on the left or right side of the road?"
rural roads: yes
Haha yep, backwoods one lane blacktop (and sometimes gravel)!
Who knows.
Mondays are even better with this channel 💯
I have a right hand drive civic hatchback and I live in FL, I love the looks I get when people notice I’m closer to them than normal.
That... is actually kinda funny haha
Rock "The Dwayne" Johnson
I say Dwayne the rock Johnson
Good insight. I've been trying to think of a downside to driving right hand right side, and now I know that it would make head on collisions potentially more prevalent.
My argument is:
Most people are right handed
Don't have to flip for mail trucks
Safer for driver to enter vehicle
Head on collisions won't harm driver as much
Turning right on red, you are seated further right allowing you to see more left
Indonesian people use right steer in the left road.
masul cover So does India
That's how it's supposed to be
@Alladeen Madafaker Just like YOU people drive on right and have the steering wheel on left.
Some vehicles are strategically designed for a driver on the sidewalk side, rather than a driver on the oncoming traffic side, because of tasks they have to do on the side of the road.
thank you this was a fast and well explained video unlike other videos where they last 30 mins or more expliaining this.
when you keep your right hand (most people are right handed) on the steering all the time, and consequently using your left hand to control the stick, that is when you know you're driving on the proper side of the road.
@@kanedaku America makes "best cars" ???????????????????????

I dont think so its half not by and standards (population, land area or even number of countries) but I think the point Riza was trying to make was that their map is incorrect.

(P.s. if you're ever behind a mailman whose setup like this, DO NOT PASS HIM ON THE RIGHT JUST BECAUSE HE MAY HAVE LEFT SPACE)
That and merging onto highways can be rough if your mirrors aren't set up perfect... mixed with a total lack of acceleration can make a scary situation. And this is coming from a guy who dailys a Mercedes 240d.
Last I checked a lot of the old Grumman's mail vans as well as the jeeps before that use RHD steering layout instead of LHD (for the reason of having to reach for the mailbox) in the united states
I think it’s convenient to be able to operate the buttons, dials, controllers, touch-screens, and switches of the center console with my right hand.
Is no one going to comment on the fucking epic choice of music? Not too loud that we can't hear what the narrator's saying and not too soft that you can't enjoy it's effect. Amazing video!
but there is no reason why you shouldn't go metric

On top of drawing swords, I always thought it's also to prevent swords clashing each other if you were walking the other way to prevent issues
Foot pedals Are the same on both sides
You are right about Napoleon fixing the left hand march/drive issue
The really real reason why Napoleon forced right hand walk/ride/drive was because how armies moved.
Yeah JDM...
Right side in a left side world = *Gangster AF*
right side driving on a left hand road is normal
Good luck ordering through a drive through
Matt Merrill - *Worth it* "hey bruh just toss it over to me" LoL
I would do the opposite.
Imperial system in a metric world = thug life
This is why driving on the left is correct
Most people are right handed and if you drive on the left your steering wheel is on the right so you have your good (right) hand on the wheel and your bad(left) hand on the shifter because steering is more important and must be more precise
Thankyou for your time #move to aus
Also more people are right eye dominant so you have your better eye watching the oncoming traffic
I got my right hand on the wheel and left hand resting out the window.
Actually not as steering is way easier than changing gear. It makes more sense to do the more challenging task with your dominant hand
@@jakob9614 exactly. And 80% of cars in Europe are still manual to this day, even if it used to be 90% 15 years ago.
Dutch didn't teach us which side to drive on.
True! Live there now, and definitely drivebon the Left. The video @4.50 is wrong.
In Canada it depended what province you were in as to what side of the road you drove on until 1930 or something, but now we all drive on the right
That's crazy never knew that. Would be so terrible for boarder cities
I’m surprised Hong Kong & Thailand still are on the left even though they’re surrounded by the right
In America, we drive on the right side of the road
In Europe, we drive on the left side of the road
IN RUSSIA, ROAD IS ROAD
Driving on the left is a safety feature. The majority of people are right handed,. In a sudden accident situation, the dominant hand will be raised in defence and your car will jink to the left. If you drive on the right hand side of the road you are more likely to slew left into a head on collision with oncoming traffic, rather than run off on to the verge of the road.
I live in the US and have a 1975 postal Jeep, which is right hand drive. It's unique, fun, and makes using a drive thru a real pain.
1:59 Malaysia drives on the left, because our driver seat is at the right
Every country that drives on the left has the driving seat on the right, the seat position is because of the road and not the other way around.
@@kevinnelson6070 There are a couple of exceptions:

Wow I never thought a car channel would give a history class lol 😂
Driving on the left makes much more sense tbh. Given that predominantly most people in the world are right handed, the steering wheel should be controlled by the right hand since it involves more precise inputs and shifting gears can easily be accomplished by one's weaker left hand.
Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia drives on the left. Once Napoleon conquered mainland Europe, the colonies of conquered countries still maintained their driving side. Also, Macau drives on the left along with Hong Kong, while mainland China drives on the right. Switching bridges allow people to switch sides when crossing from one domain to another.

How so?
