You are such a great teacher. Mine just arrived in the mail today! Just programmed manually in my first repeater. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Ive been using Chirp for another radio. This is a blast! Thank you again!!!!
This was the best video on programming I've seen. Thank you for speaking clearly and showing the keypad as you work through the features. This video helped me more than any other videos out there.
In 20 minutes I have learned more about the FT70 than I did in a couple of years of OWNING an FT60. Thank you so much. This radio is on my short list. I was concerned about battery life but you removed that question on your live broadcast. I had also heard some say it was difficult to program - clearly not true. It is very similar to the FT60. Looking forward to your follow up videos on this radio.
I discovered your video today. very well written, organized and easy to follow. I was able to easily program my FT-70 by following along with you. thanks
@@okhamradio So far so good. Getting a slow start. Just programmed the call freqs and some local repeaters. I have yet to actually transmit, but I'm getting the hang of the radio. Thanks again!
I got one of these toys yesterday. First I stuffed up my callsign so had to figure out the Reset. Watched a few videos of it your example was best. I kept trying to do it but wouldn't work until I took out the battery a second then it worked instantly. I'm in Australia and not licenced yet for digital but I still own a few digital/analogue radios. my other favourite is the mobile version of this one the FTM-100. Got new things yesterday to give me something to play with keep me busy. The last 6-7 years our ACMA said they will increase all bands and power to meet international standards. Any way they're only getting around to it this year. Making all licences combined into one. So I will be able to use digital without any extra exams/ practical demo's. don't matter. I remember before I got licence the old amateurs told me - people can buy/own any type of transmitter and listen but not transmit unless licenced. So after I got my own licence the same oldies got angry I own loads of digital or multimode HF and told me I'm not allowed to own these radios which I replied Bullshit!! :) If I ever used the Wires thingy I'd login around 2am so nobody would notice I was listening there but I do need to transmit to login. Nobody ever complained and I did tell them about listening on digital. So if the dopey gov't update our licences to meet international standards I will be able to use every function. :) Thanks for the good info I better go find more.. my club could have complete local repeaters already programmed. Looked at the offset of 147.000 Mhz and it says Plus and it is Minus 0.600khz here. Those banned here baofeng crappy radios are a lot easier to setup than this radio. But Yaesu is good quality never a problem.
I just picked up the 70D from Giga. Got a secondary batt,19in retractable antenna, quick charger, and external mic. Super excited! Thanks for making these FT-70D specific vids!! BTW... yes I did subscribe.
Great job on this video HRD!, I have had this radio for several months now and love it! - In this video you mentioned that the FT-70 does not have a battery charge icon, it DOES have an battery icon but it does not show until the battery reaches %50. I think this is the biggest problem with the battery, people see the icon showing at %50 and think it means the battery is low when it actually is not!
Thought I responded to this earlier! Thanks much. You are right. I had the battery indicator come on somewhere around 4-5 hours, but the battery lasted a total of 13.5 hours. So, you're totally correct with that assumption.
I Aced the Technician Test HRD. I will be using your video to program my Yaesu FT-70DR/DE manually. I am not going to mess around with programming it from the FT-70 ADMS-10 Link from Yaesu. I've tried and tried and tried and can't do it because of the COM Ports that are Not digitally signed. I've Uninstalled them and had them Reinstalled but to no avail. I'm burned out from trying so I am sticking to Manually and your video is Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks again HRD. Will be in touch. KD9QAN Monitoring.
@@HAMRADIODUDE I love the ft70, but sorely disappointed with the battery. It only held up for 4 hours. The battery eliminator is coming tomorrow, and will be needed in my truck. I now also am the proud owner of a ft2d. It came around noon, and it only lost 2 bars in 10 hrs of programming, sd card in, sd card out, backup, restore etc. I somehow thought the learning curve would not be as steep as it has become, the two radios are worlds apart, and the ft70 now even seems simple to use. What a difference, but what fun. I have also discovered quad net, so it's happy days. I have bought an icom id31 as well, so I will have the holy trinity on board (dmr, dstar and fusion), so let the fun and games continue!
I own one of these. I am new to ham and this is my first radio. I was at a total loss on how to do stuff on the keyboard. Ham Radio Dude is just the best on covering how to do this.
This video is why I bought yaesu ft-70 from ham radio outlet. Thanks .. great video (watched it 3x) and I saved a chunk of $$ not ordering it from Amazon... and ham radio outlet ... got it in 1 day with free shipping.
Thanks for another great video! I learned a lot from your very informative teaching about this radio! I just got mine last week. Upgraded form uv5r type radio after it finally died. I'm glad I decided to get this radio. Very nice radio, Thanks again! Wz0b/Bob
Still a No contact with that repeater in English Indiana. I am going to write that one off. I have pretty good contact with the one in Jasper, In. That's about 25 miles as the crow flies and that's pretty good for my little 5 Watt Yaesu Transceiver. Hey HRD, thanks again. You explain things pretty well. Really appreciate it. Next, I am wanting to talk with you about programming my radio. The Data transfer cable that came with the radio doesn't get "recognized" by my computer. Anyway, we'll get into that later. Thanks bro.
From what I can tell, it looks like front panel programming is pretty easy and similar to an FT-60R, FT-65R, FT-4XR, etc. but I could be wrong. I'm considering one of these but have heard claims of short battery life so I'd need to get an extra battery or two. Thanks for the video!
Can anyone tell me what the little telephone character is in the bottom right corner of the screen. And you went over how to put channels in memory but not how to get back to them
Hi, is there a feature in the settings where my screen will light up whenever there's a Rx? It just times out and every Rx after that . Only the LED lights come on every Rx but the screen won't light up unless I press something on the keypad.
I just got my yaesu ft70dr in this morning and and I just wanted to say I love the way it feels when I hold it in my ✋ I been watching your videos on how to program it so far I'm doing ok on it but one little question what is the p.l.tone
Great to hear! PL Tone / CTCSS are just tones which the radio can hear and transmit. If these tones are enabled, only people with those tones enabled and on the same frequency as you can hear you (and vice versa). if a repeater needs a tone of 107.2 , for example, and you transmit without the tone: The repeater will reject you. If you then put in the tone in the radio and transmit, the repeater should be able to hear you. Works for simplex, between two radios also.
its not working on my ft3d the fm has a line over it and I hit the repeater, I punched in a frequency and can receive but not transmit, I will keep soldiering thru I bought the ft 70 just one more radio I want to learn how to program, this video is helping
Sweet. Love it. Im buying it. Will call you soon when i screw something up. Incidently would you recommend an antenna upgrade over what comes stock? I think im in the middle of nowhere and need all the signal i can get.
I personally don't have an issue with the antenna, but in all fairness, everything I use is so close to me, that there wouldn't be a difference. I can make a video in the future, where i go test some antennas to determine.
Hi HRD: Thank you so much for your well-spoken and detailed tutorial. I am a newbie and just passed my 3 FCC exams over the past few months. I do not own any radio gear yet. I have done extensive research for a handheld XCVR radio and have decided on this Yaesu FT-70DR model. I has been recommended by my VEC mainly because it is both an analog and digital model. I had initially decided on the FT-60DR but he kindly corrected my choice. So here are my questions of concern on this model: Is it absolutely REQUIRED to download any software from Yaesu prior to using the radio for the first time? Did you have to do that prior to this tutorial? I hope not because I do NOT want to download anything from the internet to my new radio. So can I do ALL required programming via the front panel as you expertly just taught us? Is the supplied software download cable ONLY for a firmware version download? Would I ever need to download this if I am satisfied with the current firmware version? Than you so much for your expert help Joe 1-16-2022
Hey, thanks Joe. I'm sure there are certain features which would be easier via the computer/programming software, but you should be able to do most anything for programming via the physical radio itself. I wish you luck with the radio, the digital c4fm is a nice touch
Can I search the memory by call name? I just DL'd all of the channels in Florida to Chirp. My FT-70 is still charging and I don't want to disturb it. I just got it and the bat tree was flat. I'm not Australian...
great video...very clear explanation f how to program my FT-70D, Question...is your sound sync off? There seems to be some times where your are talking and your mouth is closed
It probably is off, I try hard but I'm not an audio guy or a video guy really.. the delay exist because of a mixer inline most likely. OBS allows me to set a delay of so many milliseconds so the audio and video will sync up, but it's never really perfect.. sorry
Very informative, thank you. Two questions: At 10:14 you made a test call but you received no reply. What good was doing that test without confirmation that you set all parameters correctly? Also, after inputting the frequency, tone, offset, etc., and saving to memory, could you show how to view to check that all is correct? And if wrong, how to change and save those parameters?
You have a good point about 10:14, I guess how would I know for example l we getting heard. That was an oversight on my part. I can defintely come up with something to explain checking everything. It'll be a few days as I'm currently immobile. That's for the compliment!
Hey man, thanks for the video!! Really helps me understand a bit better. Just wondering though, when programming the offset for a repeater, does changing the offset only change it for that one memory?
Thank you. I’m a newbie, which you’ll be able to tell from his question. When you were programming the repeaters you knew they were analog, not digital. How did you know that? Also, you were using the push to talk button during some of the programming. Was that button causing the radio to transmit in that circumstance? I’m not licensed yet so that think that would be important for me to know.
I typically use the website repeaterbook.com. on that website there's information as to whether it's digital, analog, and what mode of digital it might be
As far as me using the push to talk button during the video, I'll have to go back and reference it when I'm near your computer to determine at what point I use that push to talk button. I'll get back with you.best wishes in the hobby
Please don’t go to the trouble of rewatching. I don’t know anyone in he hobby so I’m going it alone and starting at zero. That should explain the level of my questions. Thanks for the videos, they help.
I would really like to know how to clear a memory item from the memory channel list. The manual I have has it under the heading "Clearing Memories", but the procedure they give absolutely does not work. This is disappointing because the most basic memory functions are to create, edit and delete (i.e. clear) a memory item.
Yes a real good vid, but I have the same problem trying to clear the memory channel, if I hit vm it will add another memory instead of deleting , it worked once ,so I am missing something
One of the better "how to", radio operation videos, well done

This is disappointing because the most basic memory functions are to create, edit and delete (i.e. clear) a memory item.
Yes a real good vid, but I have the same problem trying to clear the memory channel, if I hit vm it will add another memory instead of deleting , it worked once ,so I am missing something
Old video but great video!
So helpful
