Thanks for this amazing video @UrbanPlumbers. As an end-user with limited knowledge of inner workings of how boilers work and how to optimise them, your videos have helped me understand much better what to look out for. I've recently managed to purchase my first property (3-bed semi, with 1 bathroom). We are adding a toilet downstairs (How can people live without one there?) and are one day looking to add extra bedroom with bathroom in the attic. I almost made the mistake to go for a combi system and am now convinced a system boiler is much more suitable for our needs (running multiple appliances and bathrooms at the same time if required). So far I thought I need to get something around the 30KW mark but I was surprised when you said a 10kW system should be the standard for system boilers. I am looking to have the ecoTec Plus range fitted with a tank (150-200L capacity) but I am now unsure what kW to have now. The house wont even have 10 radiators but my current builder suggested 30/32kW but having watched your video it seems excessive. Am i missing something?

My experience is that few installers understand controls and tuning the boiler for the house heat retention (every house is different and as you noted- will alter over time). Did you consider a heat pump (again if crap insulation and old rads then this will be harder). How many installers told you to use valliant thermostats, TRVs on all rads, weather compensation? Doubt many did and when you ask them, its like an rebuke to their knowledge over yours... Will the (if old) rads be power flushed first. What makes you think a combi is not an answer if you'll have at best one main bathroom and one future extra hot tap, one more Rad (attic) and would all the rads be in full heat use all the time (nope for most)

About time we had a boiler that runs from 2.5 kw to 10 kw. My daughter's brand new flat has a 36 kw B/W that only goes down to 7.15 kw, the heating demand is 4.2 kw maximum, the system was designed by B/W and yet it is not compliant with energy efficiency regulations. The pump was left at its max speed (4) its now (2), its locked at a gas rate of 7.15 kw now, two rads I can only get a 11 deg temp diff, the other three are around 3 degs diff, you cannot get any more, I have locked the flow at a max of 48 degs for now. 22mm plastic and 10mm plastic drops, sums it up, utter crap. by the way, it has two zones, two programable room stats not to boiler plus, and 1 meter from floor, behind doors and the sun shines on one all day, plus thermostatic valves on all rads. ( I removed the heads).
As for the Vaillant controls your wasting your breath, If most engineers could fit half a boiler to put more money in their pockets they would. We have had Vaillant/Glowworm weather comp for over 15 years and they wouldn't even know it's available as they are not interested.
Thanks for the run-through on the new boiler.

I am looking forward to seeing one for myself. Glad to see improvements -
Front cover clips are updated the current ones are sometimes impossible to engage.
The isolation valve bore larger than the the current model. Hopefully that might make a difference to the approaching 3.5mB drop on the inlet to the larger boilers ?
Gas valve - hopefully more reliable.
Good to see the improved modulation rates - long overdue.
It would be good to see a reduction in cost of external controls. I appreciate the efficiencies and the facilities they provide but at a cost !
The last job priced on a system was approx £550 - 600 with added WC, 4G connectivity.
Also Vaillant technical has improved hugely over the last year or so. Thank you, arguably the most significant improvement of all and should never be under estimated.
    Thank you for your presentation.

in most cases controls will be around £200-£500 mark if you decide to zone. The thing is though, if you use those contorls and run weather comp, you shouldn't overzone anymore or maybe not aven zone at all, as you can run 3 separte weather curves form a single controller and VR71

Had a new ecotec plus installed sept 21.
Its a fantastic thing. Had a turbomax in my last house that was dated 1988 according to the date stamp on the expansion tank which I replaced, and was the only thing that went faulty during the 5 years of living there. When I moved my choice of boiler was determined on the strength of that faultless turbomax.
My only gripe with my new vaillant is the VSmart thermostat.
Just under a year the thermostat internals melted because the supplied batteries were an unbranded type and they leaked.
Vaillant engineer came out and replaced it.
Since then the thing constantly lost connection, the heating came on willy nilly even thought set temp is 13°.
Contacted Vaillant, who sent out an engineer, he fitted a complete new kit and all seems well so far.
Turns out the thermostat and communication unit are paired at the factory and should always be replaced as a kit.
I hope this VSmart install will live up to the brand name and my expectations.

We are 6 people including 2 young children so The 36kw was on-way choice for hot water because I have 3 bathrooms with 3 showers , sometimes at the same time ! I use LPG fuel and connected via esbe solar kit with my solar panels for max efficiency , more hot water plus economy ! The results are amazing & I’m very happy for it! Also the ecotec work as hybrid with my arotherm plus for central heating at the sub-zero days! It is very quiet and easy to use .And yes As you said NEVER use third party controllers. I’ll wait to see you install it as a hybrid with arotherm plus and also the settings on 720 senso! Greetings from Greece!

What size (kW) of aroherm plus do you have for that 220 sq m house? I also live in a house of roughly the same size. Pretty well isolated, good efficient radiators, no underfloor heating though.. and also an ecoTEC Plus boiler that is hybrid ready. Investigating heat pump solutions nowadays to expand the system. And could you perhaps explain a bit more the role of the solar kit/panels in your system? D o you also have an (electric) boiler like an Vaillant eloSTOR? Many thanks :)

Hi @@trashmail8 I have the 10Kw arotherm plus, model 125/6!
My arotherm plus is only for heat no Dhw !
Ecotec plus is now take place to cover dhw needs of 6 people in a detached house with 3 bathrooms including 3 showers. Αt the summer months dhw is covered exclusively from the solar panels with a boiler of 200Lt ! No electric boiler , no other source .So I made another hybrid system for dhw , installing this solar kit from ESBE company. This system is a mechanic kit with 2 3-way valves built only for gas boilers with instant dhw. As the solar panels have enough sun for hot water and the temperature is above 45 degrees the hot water make a bypass from the ecotec. When there is not sun or the sunlight is insufficient the hot water then will get back to the ecotec , will be fired to the temperature of 40 degrees (best degree set up for dhw) , the dt difference from 30 to 40 , 10 degrees. Winter 20 to 40= dt20!
At that way I always have cheap hot water and the results are unbelievable! The ecotec can manage this future from the smallest load to the largest whenever you want it! Hope to help!

Finally, the minimum modulation is down to 2.5 kW on the 26kW combi - my existing Vaillant 24 kW combi only goes down to about 6 kW and cycles WAY too much especially when showering during summer months (3 bed house with lots of insulation, and shower drain water heat recovery) - bad for the boiler and probably a chunk of methane emissions too.

@UrbanPlumbers the 10KW,15KW and 20KW system boilers all seem to have the same minimum output .. Do you know if the lower output models are more efficient at lower modulation or something like that ? Otherwise for the small cost difference isn't it good enough to get say a 20KW and range rate it since minimum modulation is same in all three models........

    • @UrbanPlumbers

No, always size units correctly. No need for bigger pipes and also you are not risking unit firing at high flame when it first fires. The iunsecurty of installers about sizing drives me crazy. It is what got us to the mess we are in now - boilers oversized by a marging of 20!
Heat loss first and correctly sized unit is the way to go.
