Being from Boston, MA & used to water that looks like mud my 1st thought was wow the water is so clean I can see the sandy bottom. Great looking plane after being locked-down for so long (going on 2 years) a snorkeling adventure with the family is an awesome idea.
I'm in maldives rn and seaplanes are everywhere now so if you want to spot some come to maldives and go to hulhumale at the point where you get off the bridge and you can spot allot of em
I have wanted to ride on these planes ever since I saw Indiana Jones but it wouldn't be the same without loads of natives chucking spears at me and a snake in the passenger seat.
@fuzzboi77 PT6's do normally feather themselves, but on floats it's advantageous to use blade latches which holds them at zero pitch..Only time we feather them is if the prop will be hanging over a dock, etc....takes a long time to wind down in zero pitch.
Thanks for posting this video. That would be so pleasant, to vacation in such an enjoyable place as the Maldives (which I've learned are some of the best places to relax and dive) and to get around in such a high performance seaplane. Good luck.
@210482fmj - There is still a market for aircraft that do not fly fast enough to require turbofans or turbojets. For this, a good turboprop design is more than adequate, and probably will be for some time. Turbines are lighter and use less materials than piston engines, but the materials they use (titanium alloys) are ferociously expensive to produce by comparison with the raw materials for a piston engine. Google "Unducted Fan", "UDF", "Ultra-High Bypass" or "UHB" for more on the subject.
If you don't keep the the props on the blade latches the plane will surge forward when it comes out of feather. This can be a big problem if you are attached to a rope, on a beach, etc.
Our air taxi was 'parked' in front of our apartment on Meedhupparu. The morning after we came home the noise of a plane woke me up and I was shocked and horrified when I woke up and was back home in my bedroom 😩
@gukakmakuk Thanks for the reply. That would make sense on all geared turboprops, ie any Garrett engine, but the PT6 is a free turboprop (meaning no connection between the engine and the propeller). So why is it unfeahered when it usually feathers automatically? All PT6's I've see start up feathered (just check out any 208 or 200/350 starts).
Their are two sea plane airlines's flying 40+ twin otters... and yeah it won't be that easy ...but they do hire a lot of new pilots just out of flight school, its like the best job to start up aviation carrier ..

@fuzzboi77 Although I am an A&P mechanic by trade I do not know the particular characteristics of the PT6.I understand Fans are usually free(independent of the compressor) on jet engines but.. ¿ has there ever been a turboprop that isn´t geared?.I may be wrong but don´t quite understand how the high RPMs(low torque) of a turbine can be converted to the high torque-low RPMs of a prop without using reduction gears.Fans are a different story because their RPMs are much higher than a prop´s.
@210482fmj Turbines are much more costly to manufacture and the amount of airmass moved is at high speed which makes them more suitable for flying at high speed at cruise,. props move a large amount of air at lower speed and develop the equivalent(in a car) of first gear. turbofans would take much more distance to pick up speed in the high drag of water(tird gear in a car), fuel load plus heavy hull structure and drag make jets unsuitable for seaplanes, they´d be inefficient at cruise.
@mrpilot. Thank you! My friend flies a 350 and the other flies a 208. I've always wondered why that happens, but again, you can't put the unfeather lock on those planes. Just curious, why is it advantageous? Is it just because the prop reaches its taxi rpm quicker?
+RAGtv it's 2017 and still checking ... as of last status the aircraft shown in this video (registration 8Q-CSL) was returned to DeHavilland Canada in 2009 and remains in operational status.

1. What a great seaplane the Otter is. 2. I cannot get over how beautifully clear that water is.
so clear that you can see a fish swim by at 1:35

it brings back memories when i first went there when i was like one or two, around this time and watching the planes leaving weas so cool
I did not expect him to climb into the plane. Thought that was going to end much differently!
I have wanted to ride on these planes ever since I saw Indiana Jones but it wouldn't be the same without loads of natives chucking spears at me and a snake in the passenger seat.

wonderful..I vve worked for 6 years at the MATaxi..flying the twin otter in paradise.
hello
Wow
Forgot how noisy those planes were. I went to the island of Komandoo in 2010. Hope you had a good time like I did out there.

Love twin otters
This is an airline I would love to fly for. Right now building time on a Husky and Beaver and hopefully get my AMES sometime soon!
That's a Ken Borek plane; boy, they sure get around. One cracked up on a mountain in Antarctica a short while ago.
Dream plane right there! I'm lucky enough to live right by it's hanger so I can see it almost whenever :)

The DHC-6. A truely versatile work horse.
If you don't keep the the props on the blade latches the plane will surge forward when it comes out of feather. This can be a big problem if you are attached to a rope, on a beach, etc.
I'm thinking about being a pilot for airplanes. I'd rather take off on water than pavement.
Dream job flying a Twin Otter in Paradise...
+helipilot pays you and for your fuel!!
@fuzzboi77 .A feathered prop(stalled) or one that is set at zero pich angle put less load on the starter motor
damn that guy stood behind the engine..
Our air taxi was 'parked' in front of our apartment on Meedhupparu. The morning after we came home the noise of a plane woke me up and I was shocked and horrified when I woke up and was back home in my bedroom 😩
How are you doing?
Are you from maldive?

yes i did it too....12 years of flying...awesome
sangat keren...

Skates all over the place. Forget to do the stingray shuffle there could be a world of hurt.
Great great plane. What is swimming underneath that plane at 1:37. Swims out from under the dock.
I like how there's a random sting ray just loitering around, cool.

Beautiful Maldive
Nice!
Now if I could just win the lottery I know the seaplane that I want.
Christ that guy is really close to the prop!
Thank you for your kind words, my partner really enjoyed the snorkelling and therefore the diving should be excellent.
damm...thought guy didnt know he was the aircraft..i thought we going to jump of...
I love Twin Otters!
Video must be off small duration and authentic

Why this aircraft don't exist anymore?
Isn't that a Ken Borek paint scheme?
@flyaguayo they don't hire foreign co-pilots anymore.
I’ve went there god it was beautiful 11 hours fliet
@fxdwings .. there are two small rays visible from 1:15.

Float plane not sea plane
Any reason why Engine 2 is unfeathered and Engine 1 is feathered? I thought all PT6's feather themselves after shutdown...
