Loving the build. Just for info, because I didn't see in other comments, decks below the main deck are number increasing as you down (1, 2,3,4. etc.). Decks above the main deck are number O#( 1, O1, O2, O3, etc.) as you go up.
The lifebelts and gas bottles may be small but they add a wee bit of colour, very noticeable. I'm thoroughly enjoying this build Ben and looking forward to the progress as 2020 unfolds. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours & a happy, fulfilling New Year, when it comes.🎅🥂 Cheers for now,🍻 Dougie.
Hey man, I’m in Godfrey, IL. Anyhow I served in the Navy and did some time on a few aircraft carriers. We were issued a book, in Bootcamp called The Bluejacket’s Manual. It contains all basic naval info aaaaand I don’t know where mine ended up, but I found this to quote “Decks above the main deck are numbered 01, 02, 03, etc. and are referred to as levels. Below the main deck, there are the first, second, third decks, etc. (remember, on a carrier the hangar deck, the one below the flight deck, is the main deck.). Frame numbers tell you where you are in relation to the bow of the ship; the numbers increase as you go aft. The third number in the bull’s-eye reflects compartmentation numbers in relation to the ship’s centerline. EVEN numbers are to PORT, and ODD numbers are to STARBOARD. The numbers increase as you travel outboard. The last letter stamped on the compartmentation number indicates what the compartment is used for.” I found this at FAS.org, hope it helps and thanks for your service.
Not sure if it's a detail you'll be getting to, but you've left the fire hoses unpainted. They're supposed to be a muted orange. The bar that secures them might be black, or matching gray of the ship. Same goes for the fire suppression wands. They should be brick reddish. It helps identify them in the heat of battle of fire. The tanks that were too tall could have been sanded down to the correct size. Good work.
There are little tabs that you bend down below each rack to get height correct. You start at the bottom and work your way up. Then you just have to align them from left to right. They also move easily enough that you can play with things to make sure they are straight. It's not too bad.
Ben, I work at the Naval History and Heritage Command on the Washington Navy Yard. One of the 10 Navy museums we oversee is the National Museum of The U.S. Navy on the Yard. In the NMUSN there is a 1/48 scale model of the MISSOURI. I took some quick photos while I was in the museum on Thursday, how can I send those to you? If there is a specific part/area/location on MO you need pictures, just let me know!! As others have said, I too am enjoying following along with the build. J-D
JD you can email them to TheMidwestModelShop@gmail.com Thank you very much! There are always little random spots where I get stuck spending time trying to figure things out.
@@TheMidwestModelShop E-mails sent. Please let me know what areas you need photos from. I'll get a picture of the model makers plate Monday and send it to you. J-D
Love the videos and how the ships coming along brother! I had a question though: On the port and starboard side of the superstructure are vents that look like they are mesh but are painted gray, do you plan on painting them or some kind of extra weathering?? Merry Christmas!
I’m sorry I should have specified... there on the existing superstructure you are working on, they appear to be to the bow and off the deck... there are two right together. One is large and the other small. Thanks
Scott Self oh those will probably stay gray like they are. I may add another wash to them to add a little depth but that’s it. On the Navy ships I’ve been on, most vents and screens are the color of the exterior. At least that’s the plan for now 🤷🏻♂️
The Midwest Model Shop ok gotcha.. I was just curious about them because I’m about to tackle this monster after the new year! Anyway it’s looking great keep up the good work.

really seeing the detail coming into the build, especially with the railing
Your attention to detail is fantastic, the tanks really make it POP! Enjoy watching your vedios. Merry Christmas.
I think the tall bottles would all be oxygen and would not be stored next to the acetenyl tanks for safety reasons. Great build, great video series.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. The main deck down go 1, 2, 3 and ect. The decks up are refered to as 01, 02, 03 and ect after the main deck.
Thanks Joey ! That's what I was looking for!
Beat me to it. Clearly a Shipmate lol
Yes, was a Patternmaker from 1987 untill 1996. My first ship was the USS Sierra AD-18, she was commisioned March of 1944.
Just to add: usually spoken 'Oh One', 'Oh two', etc.
Yep, and dont forget that in March of 1949 the navy changed the compartment designations.

Craizg35 whoa this is huge! If it was issued in boot camp, then I should be able to find a copy. Thanks man and thank you for your service too!
Yeah you should be able to at least buy a copy of the BJM. Are you still in the Scott AFB area?
Craizg35 no I actually never was. It was always a pain getting there over the years.
Merry Christmas buddy. Looking good

Good work.
The main deck is the first deck. Going down, 2nd, 3rd and so on. Going up 01, 02, 03 etc.
6:53 looks like they made some space for the crew to get on that deck from that ladder
Looks fantastic. How do you install the ammo racks in the Bofors tubs so they are parallel, level, and evenly spaced/aligned?
There are little tabs that you bend down below each rack to get height correct. You start at the bottom and work your way up. Then you just have to align them from left to right. They also move easily enough that you can play with things to make sure they are straight. It's not too bad.
The Midwest Model Shop Thank you!. I’m thinking of trying to 3D print ammo clips, if I can make that work at that size.

Are they already on this part of the superstructure or are you talking about further along in the build?

What did do on port holes? Paint or photo etch?
Paint.
Great work , looking forward to the next vid. I'm thinking of building the HOOD with the pontos kit in 200 scale.
