- Hi, I'm John Browne. No. Not that guy but this is my real name.
I'm an engineer by day and hopeless gear addict by night.
I got a Synergy Diezel Herbert module earlier this year and I Have been meaning to shoot it out against my Diezel Herbert mk II for a while. I've been messing with the module a lot. When I opened the module up I noticed a jumper with the label GAIN MODES which got me quite excited. With this you can alter the character of the two channels of your Herbert module.
WARNING: Open up the module and switch the gain modes at your own risk. I'm no responsible if you f*** this up!
I used a 2009 Gibson SG Raw Power in drop C# with a Seymour Duncan Black Winter in the bridge position for this. The module is placed in a Synergy SYN-2 which was hooked into one of the Herberts loops using the 4-cable method. The Herberts power section went into my Two Notes Torpedo Live loadbox with a GGD Studio Cali Cab IR.
When boosted, the module was boosted with a Deadweald Duality DX in green mode (tubescreamer) with gain at 0 and tone and volume just over half way up.
Here are some time stamps to help you navigate:
01:39 Demo set up
03:36 Red channel in high gain mode and blue channel in low gain mode (stock)
04:23 Both channels in high gain mode
05:00 Both channels in low gain mode
05:57 Both channels in low gain mode boosted
06:31 Both channels in low gain mode boosted, midcut on on red channel
Stay tuned for the full Synergy Diezel Herbert module vs Diezel Herbert mk II video coming soon!
low gain mode with mid cut on red, boosted, amazing sound there!
great stuff John! Definitely seems to sound best how you have it set up
This module will be polarizing. I just got mine and can say that the high gain mode is not gonna be everybody's cup of tea. To me, high gain mode reminds me of the tones on Korn's first album, primarily on Predictable....like crunchy af but not quite dry either.
The low end on the high gain mode isn't as big as low gain mode, but it's not thin either....it's just kind of meshed together into the "sauce", so it plays way tighter. High gain mode is more interesting to be honest, but the low gain mode is where most people are gonna prefer this module. To me, you get it for high gain mode though, because low gain mode is rather boring-ish. I cant put my finger on it.
I hear the high gain mode extreme. The low gain with a pedal did the trick for me and not so much extreme. I take it the extreme is for constant endless chugging and not good for palm muting?
Licking filtercaps seems like a natural progression after the valves have been thrown ;)
Anyway, cheers! Looking forward to the shootout with the Herbert!
NGL, I was really tempted to reuse that footage 😂
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne I can understand that, a Herbert video without that simply is missing something :)
Thank you so much, great video! Love your creative ideas for the 2 green channels.
My pleasure! I love you user name!
Hi Jon. Hope you are well. I've just watched your video. Great demos as usual. I'm just about to put out a video on the diezel Herbert module so I'll link your video in the description as its a great piece of information. What does the dual / single switch do on the back of the module. I'm assuming it just disables one of the channels if it's going into say a Randall Mts amp but I don't know. Cheers. 🤘🏻
Hi there! I'm doing fine. Thanks. I hope you are too!
Thanks for citing my video as reference. I'll check yours too.
That's a switch that most modules have that allow you to set the modules to single channel mode enable to use them in older untis like the Randall MTS or Egnater system. Ironically, the Herbert module does not work in Randall units for some reason. I assume there is a design issue on this module in particular for that function. Cheers
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne I thought it would be something like that. I am just getting into the system and so far its pretty awesome. Yeah its a good little bit of information that i would never have known as a bit like you i prefer the blue channel.
Sick vid man! 😊
A ‘quick one’ eh?
Fascinating! If I have the Syn2 and a VHT 2502 power amp, am I able to run it in stereo with just one model? And if I have 2 modules, can I separate each module, one to the left, and one to the right, to run in stereo?
As far as I know, you can't do that with the SYN-2, unfortunately. It can only have one channel on one module active at any time. For a stereo rig, you'd need a second module carrier like an additional SYN-2 or SYN-1
GAIN MODE #8 WILL LITERALLY MAKE YOU SHIT BLOOD
